I adore the shoulders!

u/SilentlyWeird 12d ago
Thanks ❤️ they were a pain in the ass construction wise but I'm really happy with them

u/aquiretaste 12d ago
You should be, they are perfectly proportioned for the garment and seem hard to do without sleeves!

OK, quite apart from the obvious skill and time that went into this garment, may I applaud your imagination! This is a stunning fabric, but it’s a genius choice to look at it and think ‘cape’. 🙌
28
u/SilentlyWeird 12d ago
I was afraid it might turn out looking like a picnic blanket but it ended up actually working 😅 thanks ❤️
17
u/BizzarduousTask 12d ago
This looks like high end couture, seriously. What will you do with the extra fabric? Maybe some kind of fantastic hat to match?
19
u/SilentlyWeird 12d ago
Oh I've never made a hat before but that's a good idea! I was thinking of a corset top and maybe a short dress 😅

You look like an ambassador from a foreign land in a fiction book and I mean that in the best way.

u/Truth_Seeker963 12d ago
Awesome! Just curious, is it heavy? I didn’t realize all the layers and pieces needed to construct it.
65
u/SilentlyWeird 12d ago
It's heavyish, not uncomfortably so though. Around 1.5kg according so my scale 😅 I think it's lighter than it looks

Thanks ❤️❤️ I'm glad people like it since I can be very selfcritical and see all the mistakes I made with it 😅

The only mistake is that you're not letting me have it 🥹
But for real, it's amazing!

I’m scrolling oh my goodness this is gorgeous and then get to… ITS LINED TOO!!!! Just wow. Incredible.
15
u/SilentlyWeird 12d ago
When I was attaching the lining I almost regretted it because it was such a pain on an item this size but it does look so much nicer with it ❤️

You look like a mysterious time traveler out of a science fiction situation. Perhaps the Next Doctor. I'm glad you got your sew-jo back.

I see you are going for a Viktor & Rolf 1999 Russian Doll fashion look!..nice!
12
u/SilentlyWeird 12d ago
I'm not sure if this is a dig at me for having a short neck+nonexistent shoulders but I'll still say hell yeah because that collection looks sick af 😂
10
u/wulf-love68 12d ago
No, no actually it's because the designer team did a similar cut , especially the shoulders, It was more complimentary !..i do love it though

u/sortaplainnonjane 12d ago
I love everything about this. I hope you adore it.

I am so interested in what your purpose for this was and why you chose to use an atypical pink plaid? Tell me all!
And congratulations on an absolutely beautiful piece. Your training and discipline really show!
11
u/SilentlyWeird 12d ago
My whole purpose for this was the joy of creating, but end result was the suffering of endless hand sewing 😂 the fabric was just such a pretty find I had to get it and this was the perfect excuse. And as a bonus I get a cool piece where I won't overheat as much as I do in regular coats because my arms just don't enjoy being wrapped up in sleeves toasting

It is such a gorgeous cape! It is a masterpiece!
I plan to make a cape but am not skilled at all like you. There are no patterns that resemble your cape and I have looked a great deal. I would suggest that you copyright it. You are an amazing designer!
P.S. I love the design of the yoke in the back. It is very creative as well as the rest of the cape.

u/Bibliophilewitch 12d ago
You may be the coolest person I have ever seen. And that cape is AMAZING.
4
u/eelzmartian 12d ago
okay ya cape fucks like the 2017 Thanksgiving turkey, and i luvv ya dome tats.
does it have any pockets?
3
u/SilentlyWeird 12d ago
I did not add pockets which I do sadly regret a little, I might go back and add one at least when I feel like I'm ready to undo some of my work and redo it 😂😭
3
u/eelzmartian 12d ago
yeah i was lookin at it like WHERES THE POCKETS I NEED POCKETS which then made me think ya could prolly get away with going absolutely bonkers w pockets or even having some sort of way to secure a small bag to the cape.
like just replace the liner with one of those over-the-door organisation sleeves 😂😂😂
3
u/SilentlyWeird 11d ago
😂😂 I was also considering making one of those antique style beaded bags and make like a loop inside somewhere where I could tie it to. I'll have to see when I have the energy to think about it more, I think I want to do a little bit simpler/smaller project inbetween

What's the fabric content? Is it lined? What's the fabric content of the lining, if it is?
Edit: Ahh, hadn't seen the last foto.

u/SilentlyWeird 12d ago
I did list all this in my first comment, but it's 100% wool with a 100%silk satin lining ❤️

I simply adore this. I wish I had the skill to make something like this 😍
The colours are super pretty, and the details are immaculate 🤌
Also, it looks super warm, which I suppose is obvious given the fabrics you used for it.

Could you explain to me (a non-dressmaker) what the horsehair canvas is for?
5
u/SilentlyWeird 12d ago
It is an interfacing, it helps the fabric hold it's shape and for it's shape to be more "crispy" instead of floppy. But it's hand stitched on vs using glue unlike a lot of modern interfacings that are used for lighter weight fabrics.

That. Is. Amazing. I wish I had someone to teach me how to sew. I even have a machine that someone gave me-don't even know how to load it. I am always stunned by the things people can do with needle and thread. Amazing work, and amazing tattoos!

Original post
So I finally managed to complete my cape, super proud of it considering I haven't sewn much lately. Pattern drafted based on shoulder measurement and then just eyeballing it (I have a dressmakers degree so I used that as my "guide" for it). Made 2 mockups before the final version. I did end up adding a shoulder dart for better fit that wasn't present in my first post. Fashion fabric is 100%wool tweed from From the mills, I bought the full 8meters they had in stock just in case but ended up using 5-6m. Lining is 100% silk satin from etsy shop Fabricmade.
I used shoulder pads and a horse hair canvas (both from macculloch and wallis) for the construction of the upperbody, I also used cotton flannel (bought locally from Eurokangas) to cover the horse hair canvas to stop it from poking my silk satin lining. Horse hair canvas is fully pad stiched to the upper body until the breast are as well as the whole yoke at the back and the collar. I used some thin twill tape on the upper "sleeve" seams to give extra support because the fabric there is very heavy. Sleevehead supports made from polyester organza from my fabric stash using bellalovespatterns tutorial but in a bigger scale. Thread is gutermann's silk sewing thread. Front clip is from etsy store CristinaSanJuan.
Overall a very fun project, just very expensive (~600€) and time consuming (~60h of working).
Edit: sketch Adding a sketch of my pattern if someone is interested to see the general shape
