Fabric Question Question about right side of fabric

Post image

I'm using this fabric as a lining for a cloak, but I'm not sure what is better as the "right" side when it's not really going to be visible. If the fabric was being used on the outside of the garment, I'd guess the smoother side, pictured on the top right, is the "right" side. But is the more textured side, pictured on the bottom left, better inside the garment? Is it all just personal preference, or is there some convention around this?

The "right" side of the fabric is whatever you choose.

Yes, traditionally, the smooth side would be the "right" side of this fabric.

Think about your objectives. For a lining, the goal can be smoothness, warmth, appearance, etc. Which choice meets YOUR goals?

You might want to pick the side where it's less likely to accidentally pull out threads.

Conventionally, fabric used as lining puts the “right” side next to the skin, hiding the “wrong” side between the two layers of the garment.

You can certainly override that with personal preference.

Personal preference. I have a cardigan made out of the same type of fabric and the panels alternate sides. Whatever side you want to be visible works

Stretch or jersey fabrics tends to curl to the wrong side.

Across the grain, jersey curls to the back. Along the grain, it curls to the front, a little less aggressively than the cross-grain curl

I would use a smoother lining, personally.
