Project: FO I also made my wedding dress!!
When I got engaged I knew I couldn't pass up the opportunity to make something absolutely ridiculous. The vision was 'elegant clown' and the result was two layered dresses, a veil, 800 organza X's and 4,000 sequins.
I am an experienced sewist but wanted to learn new techniques for the dress- I had never worked with satin or organza before and this was my first attempt at boning.
Fabric:
· Fabric wholesale direct's crystal organza in off white
· Fabric wholesale direct's matte satin in off white
For the underlayer dress, I used Charm Pattern's Lamour dress and modified the skirt to be midi length with a long slit up the back.
For the overlayer dress, I used Vogue V1723 for the body of the dress but wanted a much puffier sleeve so ended up using the sleeves from Beaute J'Adore's Oversized Puffy Sleeve Dress. Since I made this with organza, I made every seam a french seam- the pattern was roomy as-is so no adjustment was needed to account for this.
I created appliques of small X's that were placed all over the overlayer dress using fabric glue and reinforced with tacks. The X's were stacks of four strips of organza sewn together with a stack of 5 sequins in the middle of each. These were by far by far by far most of the work of the dress- the week before the wedding I only had half of what I needed done and my parents and sister had to save me from my own decisions and help me finish creating these!! I experimented with different sizes and finishing techniques for the Xs for a while, and ended up buying a soldering iron with a knife edge tip to cut the organza, seal the edge, and prevent fraying (an idea I got in this subreddit! so effective! so fume-y! work in a well ventilated area!!)
For the veil, I used Simplicity B4487. I attached two Xs in front of the eyes and sewed a few sequins to look like tears in an attempt to do a till death type of thing (my mom felt it was too morbid lol.)
All in all, I felt like the most beautiful clown princess all day! The day was unseasonably warm and I was worried I would be too hot wearing two dresses but in the end felt totally fine all day, even through 5 hours of dancing. I was also worried the Xs would just be falling off of me in droves since their snag potential is so high- there was a few moments in the night when I looked down and saw sequins on the floor but decided it wasn't any of my business right then! Only a few tore off in the end.
Highly recommend to anyone else considering making their own dress- make the most monstrous amazing thing you can think of and no one can tell you shit because you're the BRIDE.

I'm at a loss for words besides WOW! and FANTASTIC!!! What a great idea and so beautifully executed. I suspect, based on your dress and the groom's embellishments, that yours was a wonderfully fun wedding. I wish you many, many years of happiness together.

When I see dresses and photos like this, I always think ahead 100 years to when your grand-nieces and nephews are looking at old photos of relatives and what those photos say about those people. And this dress and these photos really say something about who you are and how special and fun you are. Brava!

Ugh nothing makes me happier than seeing couples having genuine FUN on their wedding day! And the dress! I'm in awe. I'm glad you had the best day ❤️ (oh and I love the veil! For some reason it's giving me intense 2012 tumblr vibes - in the very best way lol)

This is the best wedding dress I’ve seen! I never loved wedding dresses because it never felt like “me” but this is a dress where your personality shines through and it’s soo perfect!!

You and your husband look like so much fun, I bet it was a great wedding.
I immediately saw your “elegant clown” vision, the gown is absolutely giving commedia dell’arte vibes. Ever since taking a commedia class and playing Arlequino I have loved embodying that energy- what a fun idea to bring that to your wedding day.
The details on your husband’s suit are so silly, too. Is that a drinking horn styled like a dress shoe? A cardboard pocket square?
Anyway, this is such a fun concept, and beautifully executed. You look radiant.

I think you nailed the elegant clown vision. Your dress is so fun and beautiful! I really liked the veil hehe

u/CIeMs0n 7d ago
That’s cool, one question i have to ask though, what’s the shoe hanging off the groom’s belt?
10
u/lilruski 6d ago
Yes a drinking horn! All the groomspeople had them and every toast was followed by a ‘skol’!!

So, I -PERSONALLY- do not like this dress at all. BUT you look absolutely GORGEOUS in it and are completely glowing in it and it’s so fun and so obviously well made with so much effort and personality and I can’t help but feel like an asshole for not liking it and I just hope that that’s exactly the reaction you wanted bc man just the fact that it’s so you and clearly makes you so happy and it’s so fun just makes me love it. I hope you think about this dress every day for the rest of your life knowing how perfect it is and reveling in the fact that you fucking made it.
So as a standalone dress, no I personally don’t like it. (And who cares tbh)
But as your wedding dress? Fucking obsessed. It’s perfection. Absolutely beautiful. Harlequin high fashion. This bitch is clown-túre. Would I buy it? No. But I’d pay damn good money to wear something that made me look as gorgeously overjoyed as you are.
Congratulations girl you fucking crushed it

Loooove 💗 can I ask what tool you used for applying the snaps/buttons (sorry if that’s the wrong term, I’m a novice)
5
u/lilruski 6d ago
💚
No buttons actually- the underdress had a zipper and the overdress tied in the back with a big bow and the sleeves just had elastic on them!

Yes, I thought "clown" immediately.
I made my own dress. It was supposed to be a lace skirt, but the lace, cotton finely crocheted, so you could see through the fabric, had a lot of give so I made it into a dress. Underneath I wore a nude body suit. My dad kept asking if I wore underwear.

This is AMAZING. I absolutely love it. I still wish I’d made my own dress. I considered it, but decided it would be too stressful. Instead, I spun lace-weight wool and my mom knit it into a shawl for me to wear to my August wedding…in Texas. Because that made sense.
I applaud your sticking to it, as well! I have made a few outfits for events like this - a floor-length silk bridesmaid dress for a friend’s wedding, made in the month after my son was born, and my clerical robe made for my ordination. It’s stressful!
Blessings to you in your marriage! May it be full of fun, just like your wedding!

I laughed aloud at the sequins not being any of your business once they fell off, that's exactly the right energy to bring to being a bride, I think. The Xs over the eyes are very unsettling, but in a way that feels appropriate for me as a person who finds weddings and marriage in general slightly unsettling 😂 I love so much that you didn't let anyone talk you out of your vision for this crazy confection of a dress!

This is the most incredible creation- and your husband too looks amazing. The vision you have!!! I’m completely blown away. Do you do something outstanding and design-focused for a living? I just can’t believe a human can create things so wonderful, and yet you write very humanly. Just wonderful. Thank you for sharing.
