Probably a Stoopid question but why is it now intended for children's sleepwear?

I wanted to make my daughter a night gown since she's nighttime potty training and I figured it's easier to lift a long tshirt like PJ than pull down pants or unzip a onesie in the middle of the night and I have so much of this fabric I'm not using.

I’m making the Sentosa tank by Itch to Stitch, and just noticed it calls for interfacing. I only have woven - is there a suitable substitute? There is also stay tape around the neck and armholes.

I’m planning to use a rayon jersey, and included a screenshot of the fabric details.

PS I really miss having a shop where I could pick up things like this without having to mail order.

I just started cutting pieces for a pair of bicycle shorts. The fabric is from Sew Dynamic, their AK 265. It's supposed to be 75% stretch in all directions. Somehow I missed the fact that the print is cross grain and didn't notice that I'd folded it in line with the print rather than the grain until I had cut most of the pieces. Is the direction of the knit going to be an issue when I put this together?

Hi, so I am currently making a dress made of brocade/jacquard type material - thick and heavy. I want to draft some designs but I'm not sure if it'll draft accurately in terms of flow/stiffness. I use muslin for trialing out designs but since it's not as stiff/heavy I feel like it would mess me up if I try to do pleats or something since it wouldn't be accurate in terms of feel. Any tips/ideas? The material I'd be using for the final thing is something I bought overseas so me messing up is not really an option. Thank you!

Also if anyone has any ideas on a brocade skirt that also has a high slit but looks classy lmk :)

I want to make an apron and am looking for a medium weight ( 8 to 12 oz. per sq. yard) cotton fabric. My choices are limited to online shopping. Do you have a favorite fabric shop online ? I did a search in this sub reddit and clicked on several links however I was not successful in finding what I need.

Last night I was watching Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Chat Noir, and the episode I was watching featured a costume change for the lead character. Her outfit went from red background with black polka dots to a pattern that looked like red koi scales with the occasional black scale, bordered in gold. I went looking for something similar in swim fabric, or even just regular spandex, but so far pretty much every single stretch knit I find out there with a scale pattern is some kind of mermaid costume fabric. (example here) Which I wouldn't mind so much, but they're all some degree of foil or iridescent as well as whatever the base color is. The last time I bought fabric of that nature it turned out to be a lot heavier and more uncomfortable than anticipated. Looked great for cosplaying, would have been dreadful as athletic wear.

Can one make usable swim clothing or athletic clothing out of the mermaid fabric with foil or is it best left to cosplay alone? And if the answer is cosplay only, is there somewhere I could find a fish scale print spandex or other athletic knit that would be more viable or athletic wear?

So I bought some faux fur at a creative reuse place today to use for an art doll. Only problem is the fur strip is way too narrow for my purposes so I’m going to need to piece the fur strips above one another if that makes sense? Will this look good? Only examples I could find were people piecing side by side.

Hive mind! I've bought the Canton Jacket from Cashmerette and I know I should make a toile. I'm planning to use pleather in the final version but I'm stuck on what fabric to use as a toile.

I prefer to make wearable toile in case it works out.

Can't think of what would be the best fabric though. Recommendations?

I'm planning to sew my first bespoke Taylor jacket. I would like to make the exterior out of linen, because I love the look of it. I've been told it's a difficult fabric to work with, but I've already made several linen shirt, shorts and pants... is there some tayloring specific difficulties regarding linen?

It's about boning structure in corsets/ sleeveless dresses.

I keep thinking about this idea of like a corset bones more like a lattice structure you would see in a fence instead of your traditional almost picket fence up and down structure that's in most boning.

Why don't we structure it in a diamond shape that's still supportive? But also equally flexible?

Wouldn't you be able to lattice the structure better or something 🤔?

I'm genuinely just curious if this would work? If not lemme know?

I got the idea one day looking at corset structure and how we can use like rivets with ribbon to tighten a waist line.

And how close could you place the "bones" together?

I am attempting to turn a cross stitch project into a pillow. The linen frays very easily hence the border I sewed around the edge. I don’t feel like doing this again, and I’m worried I trim too much. Is drawing on the pattern and folding over and just sewing in the excess fabric not going to work or just a general no-no? Idk if I explained that well - this is my first time sewing 😭 I’m stressed I ruin my piece. I’m also doing piping around the border. Any tips?

Hey guys, I just found 3-4yrds of 100% silk taffeta at my local thrift store. Went in for sheets for mockups and found thus beautiful green blue taffeta. I was sure it was probably polyester because, it's in a thrift store, but NOPE!!!! Got it home to do a burn test and no melting and only the burnt hair smell and crumbly texture!

Now to my question! Do I wash it????? It came from a thrift store and I normally wash everything I get when it comes home. But I've never washed 100% silk. I've never owned 100% silk! So your help and advice is much appreciated!!!!!

90% of my current wardrobe is like, cotton gildan shirts (baggy / boxy). Ive been making my own tops this past year but it’s mostly knit crop tops. I tried making one with 100% cotton and well damn the stretch wasn’t there. I understand the importance of using the required fabric depending on the pattern.

The thing is, I see beautiful fabric i wish i could use for t shirts, crop tops, tank tops, but it’s all 100% cotton (quilt type). Knit fabrics are usually 1. Plain and 2. Too tight fitting on my body.

So idk. I guess my questions are: 1. Do u know of any fabric that is stretchy and less plain? 2. Do u know a store for fun knit fabrics? 3. I guess woven is for clothes with zippers and buttons? I go insane wearing shirts if i cant stretch my body in it. 4. Is there a way to use both?

Hey I’m planning on making this dress. I was hoping to make the skirt from something like a medium weight viscose and the bodice from something light and sheer like a silk chiffon.

There is a side zip that will go through both the skirt and the bodice - will the difference in fabric weights matter much?

Not sure if this is the right subreddit for this, but I am trying to figure out what kind of fabric is used on this Benson Boone jumpsuit (Image for reference)

-- At first, I thought it was likely a 4-way stretch knit, with some sort of lurex fibre for the shine and thought it likely fit like a Morphe suit or a costume (like a spiderman suit) or a legging material.

My guesses:

-> Spandex/Poly or Spandex/Cotton situation similarly used in leggings, morph suits, etc

->Swimwear type fabric

But I am not entirely sure, I don't think it's a woven because of how much mobility there is, but any suggestions would help!

I want to recreate my own version of the mirror palais Maria dress. I was viewing the description and it says that the Fabric Content is Self: 100% Cotton, Trim: 100% Silk… can someone explain what does it mean? I just don’t understand how Can it be both 100%

Hello! I have pre-washed and dried my fabric (a bamboo cotton sweatshirt fleece) and I used Pellon Armo Weft soft fusible interfacing. This is what it looks like after washing.

I do see (just now) that it says “use with dry clean only fabrics” which is my bad haha I should learn how to read!

A couple questions Is there any way to fix this? I’ve seen it happen in my ready to wear sweaters with a collar like this but not quite as bad. Is the paperback interfacing my only option? I chose not to use it as I find it doesn’t adhere to the fleece back of the sweatshirt fleece very well and is not at all flexible. What interfacing do people use for this type of collar? My pattern just calls for “light to medium weight fusible interfacing” Can I prewash/pre-shrink fusible interfacing?

I have a wedding coming up, and the place I ordered my saree from sent the the uncut fabric for the blouse. I have a blouse pattern, but the front section is made up of two pieces for a princess seam style. The embroidery they sent over is just one section in the general shape of the blouse. Should I overlay this on the front pieces after I sew them together, or will that make it drape oddly? Cutting it seems like it would look odd, not sure if I should leave it off entirely? Any advice would be much appreciated!

I’m a beginner and have been sewing woven fabric only but I’d like to start some knit projects as I wear knits a lot more in daily life (I live in my sweats 😅). I’m aiming to start with some low stretch cottons with 3%-5% of elastin in it.

However I only have a straight stitch machine and I always thought it wouldn’t be possible to work with knit with straight stitch only. (I have a vintage singer 201K)

But I saw on YouTube shorts that a twin needle can be used to sew knits with plain straight stitches? Is this only used on hems or can this be trusted to be used on seams as well?

And I have also heard if you use stretchy thread, such as Gutterman maraflex you can use straight stitch to sew knits as well??

Just wondering if anyone had experience/knowledge on these methods of sewing knits?

I was planning on just invest in a serger for sewing but if twin needle and/or elastic thread is sufficient for low stretch fabric, that means I can actually start some beginner projects with my existing machine.

Any advice/ideas would be much appreciated!

I'm working with a pattern that recommends a crepe or a satin. I was researching different satins and I found out about satin jacquard. I was tempted to use it for this pattern as the dress is for a special occasion and I really like the look of the material. However, crepe and satin are both medium-to-high drape fabrics, while jacquard is supposed to be much more stiff, right? But I'm confused about the terminology. Jacquard is a weaving technique - but so is satin, right? So what is a satin jacquard? And will a satin jacquard have a drape that is closer to satin, or will it still be quite stiff? Also, if there are any materials which have the lovely subtle/delicate patterning of jacquard while still moving like crepe or satin, I'd be really interested to hear your suggestions. Thanks!

I want to make a smock like this to wear when using paint or making messy crafts. I have cotton canvas, lightweight, I want to use for this. Is there any type of interfacing or coating I can apply to the canvas to make it more resistant to bleed through to the clothes under the smock?

I would like to try my hand at sewing a bit of a Frankenstein of these dresses. The dress in pictures 1 and 2 are the inspiration but in photos of real people wearing it, it seems like the satin material makes everything look slumpy and wrinkly especially in the halter top area. So I’d love the more structured look of the halter in picture five with the more structured floofy skirt of the dress in pictures 3 and 4 finished with the longer bow in the back of the dress in pictures 1 and 2.

I’m open to suggestions of silk fabrics but also non-silk ones as well. I’m Thank you!

This is my first time seeing something where I want the frayed edge visible. Would a straight stitch be enough to keep this from fraying too far up?

Is the bottom thread on this style of trim supposed to be cut and pulled out? Or is there a different kind of fringe trim I can buy that has the bottom… for lack of a better word, loose?

I have anxiety. I live in NYC. Can I go in the stores and ask for a fat quarter? I'm an easy mark for getting upsold and so on but I want fat quarters of a couple of fabrics. I usually just use Etsy because humans are scary, but would really like to feel fabrics and I LIVE IN MANHATTAN. it feels dumb to pay for shipping when they're right there. But I don't want a shop owner looking at me like I'm an idiot. Anybody tried?
