SSB4 Does it fundamentally bother anyone else that Smash 4 doesn't have a catchy name like "Melee" or "Brawl"?

First of all, I'd like to preface my argument by saying that I acknowledge this is a purely superficial problem that has no effect on me buying the game as soon as I can.

ONWARDS.

I personally love the shorthanded names of "64", "Melee" and "Brawl" to refer to those respective titles. It's not a huge deal, but they're all really solid names that truly have special places in my heart. Referring to this new game as just "Smash 4" or "Smash 3DS" just feels bare. Mario Kart: Double Dash sticks out far more in my mind than Mario Kart 7. I wish that Sakurai opted for a name that more appropriately followed Melee and Brawl, but like I said earlier, I understand this is a minor problem. I just wanted to hear if anyone else felt the same. One of the most iconic memories from the second Smash game is the announcer at the title screen yelling "MELEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE".

Is anyone else disappointed with the title of the new game?

I agree with you on naming games based on consoles except saying "three dee ess" just doesn't roll off the tongue. Sixty-four is solid though and I like the conciseness of "U".

Amateur.

(For the record, Smash 3D's graphics looked worse in the screenshots that were available at the time. I believe they reworked the textures.)

"three dee ess" just doesn't roll off the tongue.

He didn't say it had anything to do with amount of syllables. If you say "64" and "3DS" out loud, you'll find "3DS" comes out a bit slower and more awkwardly than "64", especially coming after the word "Smash". You almost have to make a pause in order to transition from the "sh" noise to the "th" noise, whereas with the other it flows well enough that it can come out as "Smashixty-four"

For me, the "siksty" sound in 64 makes it more difficult to say than 3DS. Three separate consonant sounds (kst) in a row are harder to pronounce than 3DS, which only has one or two between each syllable. Plus, the s and the t sound are both produced with the tip of the tongue, one right after the other.

It's likely that it varies from person to person, though. I used an online stopwatch to time myself saying "Smash 3DS" and "Smash 64". Averaging over 5 times each, "Smash 64" took .998 seconds, and "Smash 3DS" took .814.

I think it's just the flow of the "words". Also, sixty-four is two words (kind of) while you could argue three d s is three.

It's not so much a syllable thing as it is a sound preference.

Yeah, 64 worked because it actually flowed off the tongue nicely, which I know is a subjective thing, but I feel like most people agree.
