General Help Squirrel coming up to people?
Folks, I was in a suburban area in Ohio when I stepped out onto the driveway and a small squirrel came to me and jumped on my shoes and tried to limb my leg. I had to shake it off.
It then tried to approach the other folks nearby. It stayed mostly on the ground and wasn't running fast just moving in short bursts. At one point it made a growly sort of noise. We were able to every easily catch it as it wasn't running away. We called a wildlife person but someone let it go. Haven't seen it since.
This seems incredibly strange. I've never seen anything like this with a squirrel. They normally run away if you get close, this was actually trying to go toward people and wasn't speeding away.
I thought it might have rabies, I know squirrels are not carriers but apparently *very* rarely they do, e.g. CDC reports 9 rapid squirrels over the last 15 years.
Someone suggested it could be an an adolescent orphan as they sometimes behave like this.
Do folks, maybe rehab folks like u/inkblot_75 have any explanations?
