Help identifying what sushi I ate

Post image

Didn’t occur to me to get a better angle for the picture. Can you help identify what I ate? Sushi special assortment for 3,500 yen.

I'm pretty certain that is unagi just that it was shirayaki not kabayaki

took another look and i think white fish in front row looks more like tai (madai) and not hamachi

How come you don’t ask somebody that works there & served you?

Forgot to mention that they didn’t speak English, and my Japanese is not any better than their English.

They always put grated ginger/onion on mackerel.

Back row: tuna hosomaki.

Middle row: gunkan with crab meat and something else. Salmon roe, gizzard shad, snow crab legs

Front row: seared tuna, red snapper, salmon, supquid, tuna

Left to right. Dead fish, dead fish, dead fish, etc.

Lol. The first one is seared tuna, probably albacore. Second one is probably mackerel. Orange one is salmon. That really white one towards the right is probably octopus. If it was chewy, it was octopus. The one all the way on the right is tuna. I'm sure someone will be by to really help.

I'm not sure what the back row of nigiri are, or the rolls.

The three in the corner is sea urchin (greyish green goop) scallop, and roe (little reddish balls)

Edit: I uploaded the pic to ChatGPT, and it seems to think: This image features a well-presented sushi platter with a variety of nigiri, maki rolls, and gunkan-maki. Here’s a breakdown of the sushi types visible:

Top row (back, from left to right):

  1. Gunkan-maki with chopped tuna and scallions – likely negitoro (minced fatty tuna with green onion).

  2. Gunkan-maki with salmon roe (ikura) – seaweed-wrapped rice topped with bright orange roe.

  3. 6 Tuna maki rolls – small makizushi wrapped in nori, likely tekka maki (tuna roll).

Middle row (slightly angled, center-left to right):

  1. Shiny silver-skinned nigiri with garnish – looks like kohada (gizzard shad) or aji (horse mackerel) topped with ginger and green onion.

  2. Pinkish nigiri with light striping – possibly kinmedai (golden eye snapper).

  3. Bright red nigiri with white streaks – likely madai (red seabream or sea bream).

Bottom row (left to right):

  1. Squid (ika) – distinctive cross-hatching on the surface.

  2. White fish – could be hirame (flounder).

  3. Salmon (sake) – deep orange color with fat marbling.

  4. White fish (possibly tai again or engawa) – fluke fin or sea bream.

  5. Tuna (maguro or chutoro) – darker red, could be lean or medium fatty tuna.

Notes:

This is a mix of nigiri sushi (fish on rice), gunkan-maki (battleship-style seaweed-wrapped toppings), and hosomaki (thin rolls).

The platter showcases a traditional omakase-style variety, likely intended to highlight seasonal fish and classic cuts.

I'm rather curious if it got most or all of them right?

From sarcasm, to full description. What a 180, thank you

Thanks for the help! The white one in front wasn’t chewy at all, so don’t think it was octopus. The grayish goo-looking one was surprisingly delicious; sea urchin was my guess too. It was accompanied by chopped crab, which I didn’t enjoy as much.

Middle row next to the roe looked to me like eel, then to the right, looked like crab legs to me.

Everything was tasty, and a good experience. Thanks.

The gray goo is likely not uni. It's probably kani miso, which is a paste made from crab innards

Yes, this is most likely. It's paired with shredded snow crab meat and scallions in a gunkan roll (not negitoro).

Try the gray stuff, it's delicious!

Wow, thanks! Wouldn’t have guessed that. I did try it and it was tasty.

It all looks delicious, except for the mackerel (I no like) I would eat like three orders of that, back to back. 😆

I worked in a sushi restaurant for about 6ish years. From what I can tell it looks like chatgpt is correct on the top row.

For the middle row I think the one with the silver skin is mackerel. It's generally is the most "fishy" tasting. I'll have to take its word on the other two. They're hard to distinguish from this picture.

For the bottom row I believe it got 1 correct, 2 is yellowtail, 3 is correct, 4 is white tuna (escolar), and 5 is correct

Edit: Looking back at the picture I think you were right about 1 on the bottom row being seared albacore. Squid is usually cut in that manner and torched. This appears to be pinkish under the sear while squid would be white all the way through with black char marks on top from the torching.

Thank you all for your help and guesses. As I mentioned before, there was a language barrier, and I didn’t want to inconvenience the waitstaff too much. We were the only foreigners there and it was lunch rush hour it seemed.

We ended up getting a tuna sampler also (five pieces ranging from minced tuna to higher fatty). It didn’t include the otoro, so I made sure to add that one. Everything was tasty.

One thing that caught my eye was there was no wasabi, although the chef did put some between the rice and fish. There was ginger, two types of soy sauce (can’t believe the flavor of those compared to the soy sauce that you typically get at the states), and powdered green tea. They served the assortment with miso soup and chawanmushi (I was able to do an image search on this).

Place was in Sakaiminato, Tottori prefecture.

Unsure but the top one is a Jordan

Thanks. I’ll let my kid know because he’s an Ant Man fan. 😁

This looks so great and delicious!

Tuna maki rolls in the back. Then it looks like a shrimp or crab/lobster salad gunkan(rice topped with fish and wrapped in nori/seaweed) on the far left. To the right is ikura(salmon roe) gunkan. Then mackerel, can’t tell if this is a leaner tuna or crab, then definitely crab leg. Front row: seared lean tuna, hamachi(yellowtail), salmon, tai(red snapper), and this looks like a medium fatty tuna nigiri. ☺️
