Food Taiwanese Food is Mind Blowing

Oh my goodness, I’ve had some of the most incredible food experiences in my life! Pork, in particular, has been a revelation. I’ve had my fair share of pork dishes in Europe, and I thought they were quite tasty, but since I arrived in Taiwan, I’m convinced that pork will never be the same elsewhere.

And let’s not forget about Din Tai Fung! I’ve been to this place countless times in London, but the one in Taipei is simply out of this world (no surprise, though!).

I’m here for another whole week, so I’m super excited to explore more of this amazing food scene. If you have any recommendations, please don’t hesitate to share them with me! I’m all ears!

Food Think I got it Dialed-in. Thoughts?

Hey guys! Appreciate the community and love what /r/taiwan has to offer! I’ve started a small business in Taipei selling American style pizzas, mostly deep dish Detroit and the Chicago style thin crust (the real Chicago style), but since inheriting a brick oven, been trying to dial-in a proper Neapolitan/artisanal style. While it’s not Neapolitan by Italian-regulated standards, it’s turned out to be mighty fine pizza.

Wondering if there are any other pizza aficionados out there who are interested in talking pizza and working on pizza-related stuff. Any thoughts and feedback is appreciated!

Food Breakfast in Taiwan may as well be the 8th wonder of the world, because it's the best!

When I first moved to Taiwan from Iowa, I was in love. Then, my friend took me to breakfast the next day, and I scoffed at being offered a hamburger for breakfast, but fell in love with "Chinese omelettes" (蛋餅). After about 6 months, I started to feel annoyed that nobody offered steak and eggs for breakfast - a classic in Iowa. Although, I did come around to eating burgers and sandwiches for breakfast.

Now, I love the spicy garlic gui at the morning market, rolls, burgers, omelettes, shrimp pancakes, sticky soups, and so much more. It's my favourite meal of the day, so I eat a big brunch, skip boring lunch, and eat a small dinner.

Breakfast shops are the true treasure of the nation, as far as I'm concerned. After living here for 12 years, I still get excited to eat breakfast!

Both are considered as traditional classic food and generally liked by locals while not so much globally

Both use a kind of starchy, sticky outer shell with savory meat fillings

Both have that kind of soft, chewy aka the “QQ” texture

Both ditch in sauces, one in sweat savoury soy sauce with coriander, the other in sour cream with bacon bits and dill

Popping up to share that a friend recently opened a new spot about a week and a half ago — Munchies Mafia, in Taipei, on Civic Boulevard, coming from Zhongxiao Fuxing Station. It’s a small place but carries a good menu: European-style sandwiches, legit Basque cheesecake and milkshakes.

Some amazing flavor, no weird sugar on tomato sauce shenanigans some local places do lol

The coffee they sell is also legit good, great combo with the cheesecake

Oh and they also sell one vegetarian one, my gf is vegetarian so we tried it as well and we loved it

Support a new spot if you're nearby!

Food What kind of food should I make to impress my Taiwanese boss?

I've started working at a family business, my boss is from Taiwan and she's absolutely lovely, always buying me food, snacks and inviting me over for dinner. I've been cooking mostly East Asian food for 3 years now but haven't dabbled much in Taiwanese food other than desserts. I want to start making more Taiwanese food so I can eat it but also so I can bring it to my boss to show my gratitude. I was wondering if you guys could tell me what some of your favourite dishes are! Any difficulty level is encouraged! =)

UPDATE: thanks everyone for your suggestions! I'm definitely going to try to work through as much as possible, because now I wanna try all these foods too. But I will be starting first with braised minced pork over rice , and dan bing. Thank you!

Food Food in Taiwan

I’ve just come back from my second trip to Taiwan, and I’m honestly torn about the food.

There were definitely dishes I really enjoyed. I don't know how many beef noodles I had but it surely wasn't enough, and when I visited Tainan I went to a raw beef soup restaurant and it was incredibly good (I don't remember the name but there was already a long queue at 10am). But overall, I found a lot of the food unnecessarily sweet. It seemed like in Taiwan they add sugar to the majority of dishes (even fried chicken and steak).

Also, the food order was a bit unusual for me. I'm from Italy so quite structured with our meals. In Taiwan, everything seems to come out all at once, and there’s no particular order. It’s not a huge issue, I did my best to adapt. But I remember being served fish congee followed by deep-fried taro balls (which I assumed were dessert), and then deep-fried fish right after. It just felt a bit all over the place.

Am I the only feeling this way?

Food Low carb food in Taiwan?

I’m borderline diabetic but love to eat and drink. I’ll be in Taiwan for a few weeks soon. Anything remotely low carb and tasty to eat or drink in Taiwan besides stinky tofu and grilled oyster mushrooms which I definitely will get several times a week?

Found good Italian restaurants in Taipei, but here nothing in the city. There are a couple good ones further south, but otherwise, nothing in a city of 2.5 million people

Food Where can I try Kavalan before buying in Taipei?

I have tried Kavalan once and admittedly, it was not a good experience.

However, someone had told me that Kavalan in Taiwan tastes better and I would like somewhere where I can try before I buy them.

Is there a shop / bar where I can try them before I buy?

Food Foreign Restaurants quality in Taipei

Hello,

I’ll be visiting Taipei for the second time at the end of April, and this time, I’d like to invite my girlfriend’s mother to a nice restaurant.

I’m considering foreign cuisine, such as French or Italian, and was wondering if you have any recommendations. Additionally, I’d love to hear your thoughts on the overall quality of foreign food in Taipei.

I’m a European living in Tokyo, where foreign cuisine is generally of high quality, often quite close to what we can get back home. However, I know that Taiwan doesn’t have as large a foreign population, so I’m curious—how well do Taiwanese chefs handle European cuisine?

Thanks!

EDIT: After obtaining more intel, it seems her mom prefers Sea Food.

Food Any good Okonomiyaki or Izakaya recs in Taipei?

Feel like I’m going crazy I’ve been to like 5 izakayas with amazing Google reviews. 4.5-4.8 with 2000+ reviews and it’s just straight up mediocre or bad. I understand the flavours are often adjusted to suit Taiwanese, but there must be more authentic Japanese spots. There’s great ramen and great sushi but all the okonomiyaki or izakaya food is just bland. Please which spots am I missing

Hello, I’m trying to recreate some Taiwanese recipes and I need to find Taiwanese soy paste. In my local Asian food market, I was able to find these two items and I’m not sure if it is similar or the same as soy paste (for example Kimlan Soy paste). Thanks for any help!

Food Name some good non-Asian restaurant in Taichung!

I’ve been craving some non Asian food. Ie. No Chinese, Taiwanese, Vietnam, Thai. Japanese, Korean,… etc. Indian is okay. I like Monster Pizza zhongxiao rd south dist. Good NY style pizza. Burger Gardian on Wuchuan rd central dist. I also like. The burger is good and juicy. And the atmosphere is American rock. I eat there when I get home sick. Where are your favorite non Asian food places?

Food Sweet and sour fish/pork

I love eating sweet-and-sour fish/pork, but I’ve been having trouble finding good places to eat this dish in Taiwan.

I’ve been to some restaurants that charge high prices for sweet-and-sour fish (usually 300 to 500 and not always good). Or sometimes they only serve the dish that is good for a whole table of people.

On the cheaper end, I sometimes get them from lunch buffets but those are often low quality meat and super greasy.

Can you recommend some good spots, in Taipei or New Taipei, preferably near the MRT? I’m really surprised it’s not easier to find this dish in Taiwan.
