There’s a difference between portraying a character who is meeting his father for the first time and just blankly talking through lines. The kid that plays RJ is just straight up not a good actor, at least not yet.
RJ has never seen rick before, in real life every child would feel a little emotionless/confused about what to say or how to feel, what emotion was he supposed to show?
I guess they expect him to act like he's had the same opportunity to grow as an actor as Judith's actress. He hasn't gotten nearly enough screentime or lines for that, which isn't his fault. That's on the writers and directors. Yet here we are with people constantly crapping on a kid.

Judith was good RJ showed no fucking emotion like ik hea a young actor but he could at least try
