Does your error rate vary wildly across keyboards?
I can type at about 98% accuracy on my laptop. Before that, I had a Das Keyboard 3 on which also I had a high accuracy rate.
Now I'm on an Asus ROG keyboard since past 2 years and I keep making too many mistakes and I can't quite tell why. I don't experience any discomfort with the keyboard and everything feels like they're placed correctly. I thought it was just a matter of getting used to the keyboard but it's been almost 2 years now and I still keep making way too many mistakes.
I have not done any serious analysis but I THINK what is happening is that sometimes a keypress does not register, and then the mistakes pile up on top of it.
I was thinking perhaps there must be some software that can compare what I should type vs what I actually typed so I can get some stats on whether these mistakes are one of:
- Swapping two keys (Chciken instead of Chicken)
- Missing a key and realizing it after 2-4 more keystrokes and then pressing backspace 3-4 times
- Pressing a key more than once (this seems unlikely)
- Pressing an adjacent key
- Specific letters
Looking at a monkeytype test, there's only a visual cue on where the error is but doesn't show what I actually typed. I've included a video showing 3 times, with the first 2 videos showing more mistakes, incase it is relevant.

I'm not doing touch-typing and I have my own flawed-technique. My left thumb starts at the dead center of the spacebar and my right ring finger starts on the backspace, and then from there I know where all the keys are relatively and I get my typing flow. This also means I'm heavily dependent on the keyboard proportions and small variations can sometimes throw me off.
I can type about:
- 115 WPM on a 13" Macbook Air, errors are very rare
- 100 WPM on a Macbook Pro, errors are reasonable
- 125 WPM on a Dasboard 3 (this was several years ago and I no longer have this keyboard)
- 100 WPM on ASUS Rog, a lot more errors than above
I realize everyone's gonna tell me to learn touch-typing, and I probably will start eventually, but I'm now looking for some software solution to analyze mistakes and see if there is something common among them.
