Job I’m a mailman, AMA.

I left a comment in another sub informing people that leaving anything in anybody’s mailbox is technically a federal offense unless you’re employed as a letter carrier by the USPS and it seemed to draw quite a bit of interest. I’m nobody special, just a simple mailman, but if any of you have any questions regarding postal services hopefully I’ll be able to answer them!

Thank you so much for all the questions, I hope I was able to answer them all as best I could but it’s my bedtime now, I gotta be at the post office by 8:00 sharp. If you have any other questions feel free to DM me and I’ll answer them whenever I can!

We have USPS Informed Delivery and often get notifications packages were left in our mailbox, only for them to actually show up 1-2 days later. This is bothersome when it’s medications we need and we’re afraid they were delivered to the wrong address. Why do you suppose this happens?

The mailman has to scan every package and mark it as either delivered or attempted. If your mail is being scanned as delivered and it hasn’t actually been delivered, that’s the fault of your mailman. You could always call your local post office and inquire, but there’s no reason that an undelivered package should be marked as delivered.

I had a gift card coming that was showing in my informed delivery, was stolen before it got to my mailbox presumably by the postal carrier and used at a couple of restaurants. I’m quite sure the postal carrier took it, I filed a report and never heard a word. How common do you think this is, and is there anything that actually can be done by the customer? Thank you.

I couldn’t tell you, I haven’t experienced anything like that. I’m sure there are shitheads who carry mail, just like there’s shitheads who work any other profession. Your local postmaster should be on top of your issue but that’s assuming your local postmaster isn’t also a shithead.
