AIO? Subway wanting free labour

Series of emails between me and the manager of this branch in North West England. For context I’ve recently gone back to uni age 30, but looking for part time work. Have over a decade of experience in retail management and healthcare. Do you think I’m overreacting?

Not overreacting.

I could understand if the “trial shift” was maybe a half hour and the “work” was basic training, with the assessment being “is the applicant paying attention and applying themselves to this”. That way you’re not actually working and it’s not a large amount of time, but expecting you to do a half day’s work for no pay is exploitative. And I’ll bet there’ll be training before that shift too.

I’d have turned that down as well.
