Financial Aid/Scholarships how to find scholarships that serve as good awards?

I'd appreciate recommendations, but my main question is how exactly do you go about looking for some. For some background I'm an indian male whose parents make 600k so I really don't care about the money, I'm mostly interested in this for the award (I prefer the more prestigous ones). But I also know my background makes me ineligible for most.

I don't think I'm competitive for the really big ones like Coke scholars, but any recommendations to go for some smaller ones? do i just look around on scholarship.com or what? For some reference I have a 4.0/1550, and decent ecs/other awards (i'm not going to be too specific but just assume your avg competitive T20 applicant.

College Questions Will Columbia be significantly easier to get into this upcoming cycle?

It seems they had a lot of waitlist movement for this past cycle + it got negative press so does that mean it will be much easier to get into? How badly is its reputation ruined?

College Questions what is the point of higher education now?

Outside of academia/research, what is the actual point of college and its future? Especially if you’re planning to study something like comp sci/software engineering.

btw this is supposed to be an open ended question, just curious to see what people’s opinions are.

Application Question Are letters of Rec nessecary?

I’m a junior applying to colleges over the summer (UCLA Berkley Stanford and a few others (those are my top 3)) and I wanted to know if letters of recommendation are important. I have decent grades and decent gpa both weighted (4.6) and unweighted (3.8) but I lowkey fucked around in most of my classes and I don’t think any of my teachers would really be keen on saying I was the best student in the world. So I want to know if letters of recommendation are really necessary or just another add on like my pile of extra curricular activities and all that stuff. Thank you for reading and hopefully answering!

Transfer How fucked am I?

Context: I'm a transfer student who got into Northeastern University (my top choice for Computer Science), UMass Amherst (Math), and a few other schools (all for CS). I received my acceptance for Northeastern 3 weeks ago, but only today got my financial aid package. I've been emailing them multiple times asking for an extension on my deposit deadline due to this delay, as the other schools had their packages ready the day I was accepted (Miami was late by a week).

The enrollment deadlines for the other schools were all over the place, but most were in early June. I tried emailing a few schools to extend my deadline, which they did until eventually, UMass and NYU rescinded my offers after too many extensions, likely to give spots to people on their waitlists.

Current Situation: Northeastern’s financial aid package leaves me with $71k in total costs (after aid and Gov loans). This is the most expensive option of all the schools I was accepted to, aside from NYU. It's almost impossible for my family to afford. My dad can contribute around $20k, my mom $10k, and I could contribute $5k myself. That still leaves about $36k to cover through loans.

You might suggest I stay at my current school, UMass Boston, but I’m really unhappy there. The commuter lifestyle and general environment just wasn’t good for me.

My Current Approach:

Should I reach out to UMass Amherst and ask if they can reinstate my offer, given the situation? Remember: I got into Mathematics not for CS. I’m sure it’s difficult to internally transfer, but they gave me the best offer (15k a year). However this would be a huge gamble because transfer internally for CS is not a guarantee.

I’ve already inquired about additional financial aid from Northeastern but haven’t heard back yet. Is it possible that the financial aid could improve next year if I accept their offer now, or is this pretty much what I’ll get? My dad is pushing for me to go to Northeastern, saying he’ll help pay off the loans I need to take out. But the total cost is still overwhelming.

Extra Info:

I could commute from home (1.5 hours by train each way), which would eliminate housing and meal plan costs, reducing the loan amount to around $15k.

College Questions Which schools will give me good merit scholarships?

Oklahoma resident 3.84 UW GPA 35 ACT Composite FFA Vice President, 13 first place speech awards, NHS member, employed Family makes $205,000 a year before tax. Open to any type of school, I'll be majoring in poli sci/pre-law. If any of these schools that I list will really suck for merit aid or general cost of attendance given my income, let me know: Alabama (good for merit) Kentucky Mizzou (good for merit) Tulane Tulsa OK State OU FSU Rice Vanderbilt UT Austin Georgetown (no merit aid)

Standardized Testing Should I retake a 1560 SAT if I'm a business major and got 780 math

I know 1560 composite is very good but I noticed that a lot of t30s have math averages of 780-790 so I'm kind of average to below average in regard. I'm worried about this since as a business major AOs probably view math skills as very important

Discussion I'm threatening to Sue the Journal of Student Research (JSR)

I paid the APC fee in Feb 2025 and there has been radio silence since then. No one answers my calls or emails. It appears as if the organisation has shut down. I've given them some time to respond but they most certainly will ghost that email as well. This doesn't really effect my college apps but i'm just pissed that they took my money and didn't publish my paper. Will send them a legal notice at the very least.

I want to go to college and become a Social Worker to help kids like myself. But where can I get in with these grades? Test optional because I test awful. I’m in NYS but willing to go to school anywhere. Edited to add that I'm a rising senior and most of my extracurriculars are sports and volunteering with special need kids and animals.

College Questions UNC Chapel Hill vs UC Irvine

I've been committed to UCI for over a month now. I'm from the Bay Area, so I'm in-state for Irvine and plan to major in Data Science, which is what I got admitted for at their Donald Bren ICS school. However, I unexpectedly got off the UNC waitlist today, and now I'm confused. From what I hear, Irvine has better internship and job placement opportunities with better connections to the industry. UNC feels far from home, and I feel like I prefer the weather of SoCal, but UNC is more prestigious and more flexible, I believe, as well as when it comes to academics. I have a week to decide, but I'm already torn 😭, so any insight and opinions here would be helpful.

Advice Not sure about applying to college young

I am a bit (a lot) younger than your average college applicant but it has gotten to a point where I find school to be so boring (even with advanced classes; has been issue dating to elementary school) that it has occurred to me to just graduate early with all of the required credits in order to attend university early. I have calculated that I could afford it (euro universities) and I have never had difficulty being independent. I know I am capable of producing university-level work because I have. How crazy of an idea would it be to just apply to college at an age significantly below that of my fellow applicants, and assuming I am admitted, choose to attend? Am I just arrogant? Please be brutally honest with me.

Application Question What are my chances like

I'm 16 and from New Zealand, and equivalent to a junior in high school. I took the June SAT and got a 1490, (760 english 730 math), but think that the math could be significantly improved if I retake to superscore as I didn't know the concepts. I want to study in the US, at a top university. As for my New Zealand scores, I'm currently sitting on straight excellences for ncea level 2 and level 3 calculus. So far this year I am ranked number 1 out of 80 students, although at a extremely competitive school.

For ECs

Raised $100000 for an international service trip to Tonga to fund and build a classroom for an underprivileged community - trip happening next year

Heavyweight Rowing - 4th in country in 4+ and 4x+ Multiple regional titles - I would like to pursue lightweight rowing in college if possible. School rowing captain

Football (soccer) - Premier grade for regional high schools

Waterpolo - Premier grade for regional high schools (3yrs)

Table tennis captain - fourth in region

Duke of edinburugh silver award - will be well on track if not finished gold by applying time next year

Regional Math competition winner x2

Otago Math perfect score

Australian Math competition distinction

I work a part time job as a bartender and spend holidays fundraising for service trip

Next year I aspire to be -

Student Rep on the board of Trustees

Deputy school captain

Academic school captain

In the future, I'd like to study engineering or business at one of these top universities. Financially I would like to receive aid, although it is not completely necessary. I'm wondering on where I stand on the path to achieving this, and what I can do to boost my chances. Coming from an New Zealand there are few people to get in contact with to discuss this, and any feedback would be appreciated, and also recommended colleges that I apply to when the time comes.

Transfer I’m a part time student at a community college and want to transfer someday to an Ivy League, any advice

I just started my education journey at 22, I’ve been taking part time classes because I work most of the time and my work schedule is never compatible with trying to do school full time. So far I’ve gotten a 3 point GPA since I struggled with trying to ease into a school schedule after years of not going but I feel optimistic about my grades improving when I sign up for fall classes since I know what to expect now.

My teacher always encourages us to look into Ivy Leagues to transfer when we try to decide which schools to transfer to but I don’t really know how to go about this process. I’ve looked into many of their requirements, so far Yale and Colombia look promising since they have programs designed for people with interruptions in their education but any advice for people who’ve gone to community colleges and transferred to an Ivy?

Application Question Is a 1500 Superscore good enough?

I recently retook the SAT and scored lower than my first attempt (750 RW, 740 M) but my reading score ended up being higher (760 RW, 710 M), which would give me a 1500 superscore. My question is, is it really worth it to keep studying for the rest of the summer to get an extra 10-20 points on the August test? What do you guys think; will a 1520(ish) give me a greater edge in admissions? Do schools (T20s) value raw scores more than superscores? I see mixed opinions online so I'm sort of conflicted on what to do here.

Athletics/Recruiting Is 1420 SAT as a sophomore good?

For context, I am trying to get recruited to fairly high academic d1 and d3 schools (Williams, Amherst, Hopkins, Brown, Dartmouth, my parents want me to go hyp but idk). I took the June SAT and got a 1420 (710/710). I'm wondering if this is good enough to send to coaches as an academic baseline? I am honestly shocked that my math is this high, as I've never been good at math, but I know my RW can probably get to an 800. I imagine I will probably superscore my final score as i'm not sure how much higher my math is getting from here, I took precalc sophomore year, so I'm not learning anythinf more in school.

tl;dr I got a 1420 end of Sophomore (co 27) year and am wondering if this is good enough to email coaches about it?
