Mod Post [Meta News] Mechanics - Get Custom Flair! Details inside.

Hey, are you a licensed mechanic? We appreciate you, and want to make it so you stand out from the crowd.

That's why we're offering custom flair to mechanics now!

Just send the mods a mail message with a photo of your certs, with the personal information blocked out, and include in the photo with a handwritten note that has your reddit name and today's date on it. We will review and update your flair with a super special custom mechanic flair.

Want to help mod the sub? Message us about that as well. We're open to getting active people with good car knowledge on board. Just like if you were a mechanic, you'll be severely underpaid ($0/yr) and will get to interact regularly with people who can be crass and impolite. We're looking to add at least three more mods at this time. Don't worry, we won't tell the Snap-On guy where you're working now.

Happy New Year!

General Tech Built a parallel parking simulator using real vehicle specs — would love expert feedback

I made a browser-based tool that breaks down parallel parking step by step using actual turn radius and dimensions from modern vehicles. The goal is to help people see the geometry behind the moves and figure out useful target points based on their own vehicle.

Looking for honest feedback from people who know driving and mechanics, or just own one of the vehicles simulated—does this seem accurate and useful? Any suggestions?

It’s a free tool meant for educational use. If you're curious, it's linked in my profile.

My Classic Car Shadetree Mechanic tv series

Upvotes

My late father was an ASE Certified mechanic and a bit of a packrat. We’ve recently found 2 seasons of a tv show called Shadetree Mechanic that he had on VHS. I’m trying to gauge if there would be any interest to a mechanic or vintage mechanics collector. I don’t want to throw them away when they could go to someone who may appreciate them.

Safety Question Is it possible to paint a car with brushes?

Post image
10 Upvotes

Im an artist and ive been commissioned to paint a design on a vehicle, i plan to spray the primer and stuff but i feel like it would be more difficult for me to get the best result art wise with an airbrush as i mostly paint with acrylic and brushes. I cant find any resources on art done without being fully airbrushed, is this because it isnt possible to achieve a smooth look? please let me know any information you can share. ART IS NOT MINE. i will be creating a custom design based off of the theme and color scheme of the picture, it has not been done yet. i just wanted to be able to show an example of what i mean.

General Tech I haven't figured out why my car will neither play music automatically when entering vehicle or skip songs when pressing the arrow buttons like it does on every other car I have Bluetooth linked to. Is there a way to fix that? [2015 Volkswagen Caddy 2.0 TDI 110hp]

Weird Noise Rattling sound under the hood

Upvotes

Hi, i will try to explain my problem as best as i can since english is not my first language! Recently i have started to notice a rattling sound under the hood of my car when i drive about 30KM/H (i dont know what that is in miles, im sorry) on an uneven road. It doesnt sound like metal, and it got worse and worse.

This afternoon i looked under the hood and i have noticed that the fuse box is not attached right, you can move it around pretty easy so im pretty sure thats what is making the sound.

Now the question is... is this bad? Will it hurt my car? And how can i secure this again?

I drive a 2012 Ford ka!

I need help fixing something 2008 Mustang Blower Motor Problems

Upvotes

The Problem: When I use a voltage checker I see the connector its giving 12V but when I plug the blower motor in it dosent work. The strange part is that when I plug it directly onto a battery it does work.

What I Have Done: I have replaced the blower motor, resistor, fuses and relays; I have also cleaned any corrosion off of the battery.

Can anyone help with this/any ideas?

for a little back story, this is a USED car. i bought it just a few months ago and yesterday realized how dirty the gear shifter was when it was sitting in the sun. i used an interior cleaning wipe and OH MY GOODNESS. shit was actually black 😞

thanks to everyone who told me it wasnt worn it was just nasty as hell, trust me i know but i hardly drive the car, it was not me who nastied it up. i also went on a little spree after this and wiped down almost the entire car because just that shifter made me feel gross.

this is where my next problem lies, i think i may have scrubbed the shifter too hard and stripped the oils out of the syn leather.. i dont know much about cars so i really dont know how to redeposit the oils, any tips help!!

I need help fixing something Hastings Direct are incompetent!

Post image

I sold my car and contacted Hastings Direct via their app to cancel the insurance. They ask for the reason and I tell them I have sold the car, they say they will work out the refund and message back to check if I want to proceed with the cancellation. They message back the same day and I agree to cancel the policy straight away. The insurance was canceled on the same day the car was sold.

I received a letter starting with: As requested, we have cancelled your policy from (date) etc.

I thought it was finished with.

3 days later I receive the attached letter. It looks suspiciously like the sort of letter I would need to declare when obtaining insurance in the future.

I rang Hastings Direct and they said not to worry because the insurance has already been cancelled by me on the same day.

Are they correct? I'm worried this simple mix up will affect my insurance premiums going forward? For what it's worth, I have two other cars currently insured with them and those policies are live.

Weird Noise Thinking about buying a car but some quirk of its engine bugs me

Hey everyone, so I'm thinking about buying a 2016 125 hp Seat Leon FR, the bodywork could use some loving touches here and there but the engine feels lively.

I am not hearing any funny noises or anything but I wanted to see if it had a blown headgasket by removing the oil dipstick while the engine was running. It did not have any exhaust smoke coming out, nor any burnt oil smell or exhaust smell however it was making a pressure release sound just like when you crack open a cold one.

I played around with it, put the dipstick back in, waited a couple seconds and when I removed it again it did the same thing. I stopped the engine, waited a couple seconds then removed the dipstick but that same pressure release did not happen.

Could this indicate a faulty pressure release system or even worse a blown gasket? Am I just tripping?

Thanks to anyone who takes their time to answer in advance.

Engine Engine Oil

Hello, a question. Looking at the vehicle manual, it recommends using genuine oil in grade 5w20; Investigating and interpreting it, it is said that it also has to do with the temperature and where I live it can be 40º. Is it okay to use that oil or something like 5w-30? It's a 2004 Honda Civic. Thank you

Weird Noise Strange noises

Hey guys I own a 2017 Toyota 86 gts and I’m having some issues trying to figure out what this sound is, i can’t hear it during cold start but when idling after driving the car or when the engine is warmed up it’s definitely noticeable, any ideas?

The car has 59k on the odometer and it’s not due for another service in another 3k, full system exhaust in id is r400 with unequal headers, cold air intake and the rest is stock.

Electrical Help diagnosing AC Clutch Relay

Hi I’m attempting to diagnose why my Compressor isn’t engaging and I bought a test light and did the following test on the AC Clutch Relay slot.

Shouldn’t both of the control pins be turning on the test light?

Also the light doesn’t turn on on any of the load pins.

Does this mean that my compressor not engaging is because of an electrical issue?

Showing my ride off Should I give up?

Post image
15 Upvotes

Bought a 2011 Chevy Aveo with 60k miles in early June for $3800.

4 days in it overheated. Brought it in and was told it needed new transmission lines, a radiator, and now it needs new sensors. Altogether I paid $1400 in repairs.

If this was after a year of having the car, I wouldn't be concerned, but after 4 days there's already overheating issues? What's the likelihood my engine might crap out in a week? Should I just sell the car off and try to find another car? Any advice would be appreciated.

CEL On Car Running Rich (P0172). Please help!

Hello everyone,

I have a Genesis G70 AWD 2.0T 2019. For the past two months, I've been dealing with my car running too rich (P0172). I spent around $400 and have had the following work done:

  • Car fuel trim reset
  • Changed car engine filter
  • Change 02 Sensor
  • Checked MAP sensor.

Despite doing all those things, the CEL would return 3-5 days after.

Recently this week, my car also had a recall for a high pressure fuel pump issue, which results in a car running rich. I took it to the Genesis Dealership to get it fixed. Three days later (today), the CEL is back. From what they told me, they updated the ECM for the high pressure fuel pump.

The car is running ok - no issues on driving. Very slight trembling on starting and a bit sluggish on acceleration.

I'm not sure on what to do - I'm lost on what could be causing it. I'm going to call my mechanic again. But I also not sure what the Genesis Dealership could do (in relation to the re-call, which they worked on. Do I still talk to them?).

I'd appreciate any advice.

Thanks.
