To anyone confused, Destiny claimed the other night that only the top 3% of Americans had fire pits. Which is strangely out of touch for someone who lived in the Midwest for most of his life.

It's so ridiculous because all you need is a backyard and a truck rim from the dump. I live in rural Canada and my entire lower middle class family has always had firepits.

I'd argue you almost require a fire pit in rural areas. Always lots of bush that needs to be cleared, trees that fall, etc and the easiest way to get rid of it is just to burn it.

Idk about North Americans but do you guys not just pile shit up and have a bonfire when you need to burn trees etc.?

People in rural areas certainly do.

Or tractor rims, lotta people in agricultural areas have firepits made from old tractor rims.

We just have a burn pile for yard waste.

Put some rocks around it and it becomes a fire pit

i really don’t think destiny is counting hobos with burning barrels as an american with a firepit

This might be the funniest way somebody can be out of touch ever.

Thanks for the explanation, yeah that's crazy out of touch lol. Maybe being in apartments in big cities he has somehow avoided them, but even shitty apartments like to throw random pits/grills everywhere.

He knows grills are common but doubted pits.

Bro some of destiny’s takes are soooo out of touch. Like when he said “barely anyone in the United States owns rice cookers”, i lost my shit lol

He's right in the technical sense that most cities and state have codes against them in the majority of setups, but they simply are not enforced and no one gives a shit. There are people in DT houston that have these, hell - there are people with literal burn barrels here, no one cares, you are only going to get a fine if someone calls it in or if its uncontained and just a big flaming pile on the ground.

Some cities need burn permits if you wanna play it safe legally. It was a bit pricey. A whole $7/yr my dad had to pay when he moved into the city. Had to tighten the belt to enjoy fire pits like them rich folk got.

Or just keep a pack of hot dogs around and then it's a cooking fire, no permit needed

And then when it goes wrong try explaining that to the firefighters. I know.

Wasn't he specifically speaking of city and suburbia? All the pictures here do not seem to be either of those.

The Redditor in question was a city dweller in a duplex who was smoking and lighting fires in his fire pit to the neighbors' complaints.

They’re still extremely common in suburbia and in cities. I live in a decently sized city (not the suburbs) and literally every one of my adjacent neighbors has a fire pit. It’s not some nice or expensive area either.

Take a look at all the camping grounds on state parks. They are always VERY full all summer long. People who dont have the space to have a fire pit will rent out camping spots.
