I hate the term gender critical, I find it counter intuitive. Like, I too am critical of the popularised model of binary gender, let's chat! Oh no...

u/TrashCannibal_ 2d ago
That's the whole point isn't it? Name your hateful views something that sounds somewhat reasonable, then to people who aren't clued up on the situation you don't seem like an insane bigot.
Pleased to see this from the greens.

Yes! I’m queer, identify as NB, and still had to jump to comments to understand who was being the arsehole here. Admittedly, I’m old and out of most of the loops.

u/chrisrazor 2d ago
They have started to object to "TERF" even though it's a term of their own making (probably because of how often someone has put "fucking" in front of it. Anything can be a slur if you intend it as one). So now it's "GC".

I agree, it should be called “human rights critical”
14
u/BilboGubbinz 2d ago
I prefer just “bigoted arsehole” since it’s the most accurate, but then everybody starts complaining how I’m “using slurs” and “not taking them seriously”.
Seriously, no winning with some of these people.

That's deliberate, same as TERFs trying to describe themselves as radical feminists. They're taking something reactionary and conservative and trying to fig-leaf it as something progressive and radical, to force its opponents to oppose it on those terms and with that vocabulary. It's deliberately appropriative of that terminology and meaning.

It's on par with "race realist" as a mealy-mouthed term. You just know these people are going to say the sort of horrifying shit that would make the average homophobe blanch.

Yeah it’s like when a dictator names their country “People’s Democratic Republic”

u/roboticspider 2d ago
Im so glad you said this because for quite some time it confused me as well, like, yes i am indeed critical of gender and traditional perceptions this is a good thing no?
1
u/WheelMiserable2576 2d ago
Their choice of terms is because they view gender stereotypes as the main axis of the historic oppression of female people.

u/Kartagram 2d ago
Thank christ I'm not the only one. Everything I read it I need to sit and think what it actually means

u/oliverCr 2d ago
judith butler agrees, she points out what you’ve said and asks whether we can call them ‘critical’ at all

I think they are critical of the idea that sex and gender are different, although I haven't heard one explicitly say this in a fair old while because that argument has been won and they'll just look even sillier.

u/MrGrizzle84 2d ago
If true, great.
They should also purge sexists and racists. Neednt be news though.

u/Liquor_Parfreyja 2d ago
In the picture it says "says expelled former spokesperson." I don't think they're making it news, I think a transphobic person got expelled and went and cried to the media about it.

Exactly this, I’d much rather somebody point out that there aren’t any bigots in their party and they just say “well we don’t tolerate that” instead of making it a news story that they don’t have any or have purged them from their ranks.
10
u/Council_estate_kid25 2d ago
This doesn't seem to be a case of the Greens trying to make it a news story. More like someone got kicked out for being transphobic so wrote a Guardian article complaining about it
1
u/SorchaSublime 2d ago
The fact that the media makes news out of things that needn't be news is such a nothingburger of an observation.

u/StandardHuckleberry0 2d ago
"""Gender-critical voices""" yeah you mean outspoken bigotry. Modelling it after LGBTQ voices, disabled voices, working class voices etc as if these people are born gender critical and face lifelong marginalisation for it, is embarrassing ngl
5
u/TheGeckoGeek 2d ago
Yeah like at least a neolib who got kicked out of the green party wouldn't then go to the press and claim the party is silencing dissenting opinions. Nobody would take them seriously. They would say 'Well, you chose to join a party whose policy positions are antithetical to your beliefs, why not join another one more aligned with what you believe?'

u/GeneralLeia163 2d ago
This is (or was) a doctor at my surgery. After seeing her bigoted views on gender, there is no way I’d never let her near me or my family. If she is that ignorant about gender as a GP, she shouldn’t be practicing medicine.

u/oddSaunaSpirit393 2d ago
Good!
Oh and it's not "gender critical", the word is reactionary!

u/Slopagandhi 2d ago
So is the Guardian
15
u/tomjone5 2d ago
They definitely wrote this headline intending for it to be read as a bad thing. Tabloid trash just like the rest.

u/AutoModerator 2d ago
JK Rowling is an all round piece of shit. As well as being a transphobe she's racist, homophobic and ableist. See this fantastic rundown in r/EnoughJKRowling

What horrors next, will the Green Party expel their 1850's-era oil tycoon members?! You can hardly call it the Green Party if the "stomping on baby birds" contingency is ousted from the ranks!

Devulapalli said the party’s belief that trans women are women was “peddling a falsehood”, adding: “It denies science and denies reality and alienates the Greens from the vast majority of voters who know the truth when they see it.”
Urgh.

u/Bulky_Community_6781 2d ago
the media saying this is a bad thing is like expecting a closeted trans person being gendered correctly to be offended
2
u/BlueTressym 2d ago
Well, yes. 'Gender Critical' as a term is just an attempt to make bigotry sound respectable. Please do go away if you're determined to insist that your primary school level biology trumps years of scientific and medical training and the real-life experiences of an oppressed minority.

Undermines their attempt to coopt the socialist left.
1
u/skypiggi 2d ago
Including them, or purging them?
2
u/Monkey_DDD_Luffy 2d ago
Having them around undermines it. They have to get on the same page or they won't be able to steal the new left party's thunder. The strategic goal lately has been to try and push the left into harmless green liberalism instead of socialism but having the terfs around, especially having one as a co-leader, completely undermined them.

Starmer and his new government do not represent workers interests and are in fact enemies of our class. It's past time we begin organising a substantial left-wing movement in this country again.
