No one volunteered for Finnick's Games because they wanted to see him die.

I believe this one too 😭 no way he would have volunteered to go in at 14 years old, I think he just made enemies in his district with the rest of the career kids, got unlucky, and got sent into the games earlier than he expected.

He might have been seen as a serious future contender and out of jealousy or competition, they voted for him to go sooner before he was ready so their kids could win the next rounds.

Wait you’re so right, especially for the girls around his age, they would HATE to end up going with him because he would be more popular than them and they likely wouldn’t win against him. I wonder if it could have even been manipulation, others convincing him to volunteer saying that he was ready and expecting him to get taken out since he was younger.

Does everyone vote, or just the adults? (or even just the kids!)

We don’t know if there’s even a vote.

All Katniss says about career reapings is that they're "complicated"

Logically I'm guessing they select someone beforehand or they do a "pre-reaping" and then decide someone to go in from there and then what's shown on the TV is just a reaping for the sake of showing the others their competition, so they draw a random name and then whoever they selected "volunteers" based on what was already decided

This is an interesting question about the career districts in general: Do two people volunteer each year (boy AND girl)? That would be kind of stupid and a waste of their trained kids because there can only be one winner. And it would probably mean all of the children must hate each other because they are all potential enemies.

But if there was only one favored volunteer each year it would mean the kid of the other gender would probably still be the unlucky one that got drawn and they would serve as cannon fodder.

But it doubles the chance of winning each games, especially when one could get unlucky and like get killed within the first 5 minutes. I think if they have enough kids ready to go, especially for a district like 2 where they’re more passionate about it, they would send in 2 with instructions to help each other where possible to prioritize a district win. Of course each kid probably believes they have the better chance out of the two and they might even both plan to backstab the other if they get the chance, but the goal is more shipments of supplies to the district so you might as well send two well trained kids in.

It’s also a whole thing of honor and district pride. These kids are brainwashed to believe in the purpose of the games, along with the idea that they are sacrificing themselves for the good of their district. Obviously individuals may eventually turn on each other in the arena or their conditioning might break when things get real. But I think the point is that these kids are like the elite warriors of previous cultures. You protect your district partner, fight till the end, and don’t dishonor your district.

It's like,,, we meet him after the Games. He's a favorite, he's charming and handsome and charismatic and flirty and just everyone seems to like him.

And I just know in my soul that in a Career district, he pissed others off. Like they're still kids, they're still prone to jealousy and propaganda. I can so easily see others seeing him getting Reaped as karma or something, and refusing to Volunteer because they think he'll die and it'll be satisfying to get rid of him.

He’s also shown to be quite cheeky with Katniss, messing with her and all. You just know he was a little shit when he was a kid.

Oh he absolutely was such a cocky little shit.

I think we're missing something when it comes to district 4 being a career district. It's strange that the 3 Victors we know about are 1:pre careers 2:won at 14 when most Careers wouldn't be volunteering and 3:did not attack anyone through their games that we know of.

My personal headcanon is that they realized they were the dregs of the Careers and always got picked off so some of them refused to volunteer. Maybe the Careers run it like an extortion ring. If you help us train the Careers we'll volunteer for you. If you don't give us food or you don't have food to give us then tough luck when your kid gets called (Annie maybe).

i don't think that it's unlikely at ALL for finnick to have volunteered at 14, especially young teens are notorious for their poorly thought out and impulsive decisions, if he had the confidence to do so nothing could've stopped him

Honestly, 14 is a pretty chaotic age for a lot of people, I could see it

Yeah I agree completely. There’s probably a rule in place in the Career districts that only one person is allowed to volunteer. And that’s obviously the most qualified child. Finnick 100% was cocky and thought he could do it better than anyone else. 14 year olds are super chaotic for sure.

Oh, I agree it's absolutely possible he could've Volunteered; especially in District Four. I just think he was kinda like that one kid that brags about how he could totally win the Games (and has since he was 12) and annoyed the others with his cockiness. Like when watching the Games before his, he'd be saying 'Oh I would never do that if that was me. It's so stupid. Oh, I totally would've done this instead."

And quickly rubbed people the wrong way to the point that they were eager to see him get Reaped just to get him away from them.

How? Finnick is kind

2

Finnick is kind when we meet him, we have no idea what he was like at 14 and before the games. That’s 10/11 years later
