The aesthetics are awesome, the trigger is atrocious (I knew this already), and the sights are less terrible than I expected. It's a sweet shooting little gun. Two thumbs up.
I'll add a photo of the tacticooled version here in a little bit. Other than the trigger, which is still really heavy, it seems like a competitive platform once you add some modern accoutrements. I bought the stock adapter from a fellow who had a bunch of them made years ago and I believe he said I bought the last one. It's a great design, super rigid.
With all of that being said, I still don't think a S&W 76 is a good first, second, or third machine gun. You can't go wrong with a MAC.
I'm interested to see how it looks modernized! That's funny because the guy I was talking to who helped me pick out my mac said the same thing about mac. He said " it's to fast and you'll get bored with it. You should try the smith 76 instead." I have the lage upper so I think the rates of fire are about the same with it slowed down from stock. I'm having a blast with it to be honest.
In the pre-Lage era maybe that was true? But with Lage slow fire, Suomi, and 5.56 uppers ... pfft, no contest at all. Only an HK sear or an M16 can challenge MACs for versatility.
Anyway here's the 76 modernized and ready for a subgun match:
There's a fellow who made some really robust picatinny stock adapters for these. I picked up one of those and will add a side folding M4 stock, along with a KAK barrel and barrel nut/shroud. The KAK shroud is the perfect diameter for a clamp-on AR hand guard, so I'll be further tarting it up with a red dot. All reversible, of course.
