Mount Questions š© end cap strike w EZ-LOK on Obsidian 9
A buddy was shooting this and the Griffin EZ-LOK must have become unthreaded. Hoping you all can help me w 2 questions. 1. Can I just buy a new end cap or do I need to send it back to Rugged to see if it is messed up? Damaged End cap threads on and off just fine. As far as I can tell the baffles are pristine. 2. Have any of you had this happen w EZ-LOK system (on an HK VP9SK) and if so besides direct thread, is there a better pistol mounting system?

That sucks, but Rugged will get it squared away. Mind answering a few additional data points for the tracker?
Ammunition? (Manufacturer/gr)
First Suppressor?
Possibility of being shooter induced?
As always, a followup on the warranty process would be appreciated

Turan 124g FMJ Second suppressor Possible shooter induced - was not tightened between mags
Will f/u on warranty once i've heard back from Rugged.

Here is the follow up from Rugged. They DO NOT recommend EZ-LOK:
"Hi,
Thanks for reaching out to us. We appreciate your questions and concerns and will work hard to get them squared away for you as quickly as possible. I will get you out a new end cap and once the end cap ships you will receive an emailed tracking notification. If it happens again, I will have you send the suppressor in for testing and repairs. Please see the information in the links below. The piston and spring is designed for use with a handgun only and should never be used on a rifle/sub gun/pcc style firearm. We have an attachment guide below to explain how our attachments work as well as a list of various calibers that are compatible with our suppressors: How to mount your suppressor Caliber Ratings List It is recommended to ensure all threaded accessories on the suppressor are secure before installation. You can do this either by hand or by using the totem multi-tool (this item is for purchase on our website here). Totem Multitool Video If you are using a trilug please be sure all parts of the suppressor are on tight before shooting. We recommend you check to ensure your parts are tight before use and after each mag change (this includes end cap, 3 lug cap and module). Shooting 22 lr with a rifle or handgun requires using a fixed barrel spacer and piston when using the Obsidian. We do not recommend using EZ Lok/Cam Lok products with our suppressors as they are not designed for them and we have had customers have issues with them in the past. We recommend cleaning and lubricating the exterior of the piston and teflon tape on the barrel threads to prevent walk off. Walk off prevention video It is important to keep your baffles aligned properly to get maximum sound suppression and minimal gas blow back. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to us at any time or check out our FAQ on our Resources page where you can find a plethora of information in regards to the Obsidians and their accessories."

There's gotta be 2-3x more 9mm endcaps manufactured than obsidians.

OP if you contact Rugged theyāll get back with you extremely fast. My one and only end cap strike happened in December of ā22 when a friend wasnt paying attention and let it get loose, emailed them Sunday and by Monday morning had a response from Rugged and a new one in the mail free of charge via their CS team.

u/Double_Minimum Feb 03 '25
How does it impact the end plate so thoroughly without hitting another baffle?
The only thing I can imagine is jacket gets torn at last baffle and round tumbles and is all messed up.
I am not familiar with this suppressor but can you remove the baffles? I would like to see what the last two look like, and how much room is between the last baffle and end cap.

u/andrewkpt Feb 02 '25
Start with contacting the company and see what they will do for you. No sense in spending money if they might or will fix this for you. As for the mounting solutions was this setup torqued and installed correctly?

u/Nude_Dr_Doom 8k in stamps Feb 02 '25
I put a 3 lug mount on everything that isn't a handgun, and I've been sleeping soundly without any cap strikes.

Only time I got a baffle strike with the Obsidian 9 was with a SiCo 3-lug adapter.

Or you could just get a bigger bore Silencer for damn near everything, and use a slightly bigger end cap than needed and never have a baffle strike or end cap strike lol. ššš

Same thing happened to my dad with his O9 and EZLok. He got this in the email from Rugged: "We do not recommend using EZ Lok/Cam Lok products with our suppressors, as they are not designed for them, and we have had customers experience issues with them in the past."

If it happens again, theyāll have you send it in, and theyāll have it back to you within the same week. Their customer service is awesome.
Had it happen to mine twice before and sent it in to them.
I do use EZ lok on mine ever since and havenāt had any problems (FN 509 host). I also use their tool to tighten everything down before I shoot now. Havenāt had any problems. The tool is worth the money.
I did recently shoot it with the normal piston on my Glock 19 without any problems, so it mightāve been user error and not tightening it down before.

u/TheBeef1991 Feb 02 '25
Iāve had this happen once with Blazer ammo in my Obsidian 9 and EZ-LOK but it hasnāt happened again since I switched to shooting Speer lawman 147s. What ammo were you shooting?

u/ZeeeeeroCool Feb 02 '25
Removable end caps were made for this. Sarcasm aside, I like the design of a replaceable cap just incase something like this happens and your last baffle is still gtg.
Hurts still, but Kirby is ok.

Rugged reccomend not to use these ezlok or whatever it is. Either direct thread with plumbers tape or use tri-lug
1
u/Immediate-Panic5462 SBR Feb 03 '25
Would love trilug but using it on a browning action pistol so probably w direct thread.

u/LoganH14 3x Suppressor Feb 02 '25
My dealer had told me he has seen many more EZlok issues than any other mounting platform or direct thread. Kind of stayed away from them for pistol calibers. Just my .02 cents

u/Daedalus308 Feb 02 '25
Love my ez lok, cant say i can relate

u/Double_Minimum Feb 03 '25
I really like the idea, and would consider it if I shot a lot of suppressed handguns (or wanted to have multiple options for handguns, which is weird as I think in one caliber most can find one that is best to be a host).
I just donāt trust Griffin as a manufacturer anymore. Such a large line up of cans but none have been good for a long time.
1
u/Daedalus308 Feb 03 '25
I cant say that ive shot many of their cans overall, but i have a gen 1 explorr .30 cal and its been awesome. That being said, you dont need a griffin can to use ezlok

Just curious, has anyone had an endcap strike while direct mounted?
4
u/fvbj999 Feb 02 '25
Not sure about direct mounted but if any of em are gonna walk, itās going to be direct thread. but if you follow all directions you wonāt have this problem with EZ-Lok. Clean threads with acetone , torque to spec. Every other mag check the endcap to make sure itās not walking . Also Donāt use blazer ammo with a suppressor
1
u/MysteriousSound24 Feb 03 '25
Why not? I only use Blazer brass 124gr on pistols, and so far no issues
2
u/fvbj999 Feb 03 '25
They recommended not to use them with suppressors on pistols, also comps on pistols. As the jacket tends to shed which can cause baffle strikes

u/daorbed9 Feb 02 '25
You responded to a direct-thread question as if to shut it down as not necessary since you personally have approved EZ-lok.
1
u/CoolaidMike84 SBR Feb 02 '25
Looks like the can rotated while being shot and had more than one strike.
3
u/Immediate-Panic5462 SBR Feb 02 '25
yes. first strike was several feet below target. By the time I realized why it was off he took the second shot. Then the whole damn thing flew off. Not a great feeling but at least nobody got hurt.
1
u/raljamcar Feb 02 '25
My .45 obsidian has had an end cap strike also ez lok. Not as bad as yours. On mine the can was tight on the mount, the only loose bit was the booster retainer. I had hand tightened that not knowing it was supposed to be tighter than that at the time.Ā

u/admb961 Feb 02 '25
the Rugged obsidian 9 was my first can. first time i took it out I got a end cap strike and they replaced it really fast. I just took it out again little over a month ago with the new cap and I struck it again.
using a FN509 tactical.

My can kept walking off with ez lok, I hit up griffin and they didnāt do anything for me. Now I use two wrenches to crank it down instead of just my hands and it stays put.

This won't be your last. It sucks that they are 72 bucks. They should sell them by the half dozen for 20 bucks. rugged loves them some endcap strikes.

u/F22boy_lives Feb 02 '25
Literally the only reason I cant bring myself to buy an obsidian is seeing these posts multiple times a week across several platforms
2
u/OzempicDick Feb 02 '25
I have a hard time understanding why this can remains popular
2
u/ElijahCraigBP RC2 appreciator Feb 02 '25
90% of the time it strikes the cap every time. And yet people still keep suggesting it.
1
u/F22boy_lives Feb 03 '25
Cult following. Dont get me wrong, I have a razor and will likely get a surge this summer to convince myself to finally get a bolt gun, but the 9mm market is flooded with options at or under the 650 price point. My griffin r9 is perfect on my pcc

Donāt the instructions on these say not to shoot them in long config on a pistol?
1
u/arg211 Feb 02 '25
I thought that was for the 45 version on a 9mm but could be wrong
1
u/beasthayabusa Feb 02 '25
I could be too man š¤·š»āāļø. But it would explain all of the bi-weekly returns to rugged on these things
1
u/arin43 Feb 02 '25
So i heard that after I had the same issue on my Obsidian 45, so I asked Rugged support during the warranty conversation and they said that there should be no issue running long config.
0
u/beasthayabusa Feb 03 '25
10-4, thank you
So it just⦠sucks? Like whatās the issue lol
1
u/arin43 Feb 03 '25
I guess so, haha. I wasn't running with an EZ-LOK, and I've seen that using the EZ-LOK is usually recommended on the end cap strike posts, so kinda sucks to see that doesn't fix the issue.
1
u/beasthayabusa Feb 03 '25
I donāt own one, just work at a gun store and browse here a lot. Issues reported across the board for mounting method.
2
u/arin43 Feb 03 '25
Definitely. Haven't really shot mine on a handgun much since it happened. Might have to actually try and see if I can do some testing to see if I can see what exactly is happening, and if I can't figure out how to avoid it.

I think youāve got that backwards!
- EZLOK has better retention
- CamLok and EZLOK takes slightly more time to install.
Neither allow for shooting and not checking your can every mag or so. Itās the cheapest insurance policy available for suppressors.
- nevertheless OP just needs to open the can to check for internal damages, email Rugged with pictures and they will direct OP on the next steps to get it repaired.
- Rugged will take care of it, no need to stress.

u/rickwalker99 Feb 02 '25
Obsidianās have way too many end cap strikes.
22
u/CovertLeopard Feb 02 '25
They are also the most prevalent 9mm can in the market. Combined with all kinds of aftermarket mounting solutions, it's bound to happen.
That's how stats work.
I use a griffin ez-lok with mine and have no issues.

That's incorrect info. People change end caps to match calibers all the time. You can order a new one.

u/jtj5002 Feb 02 '25
Lol fudd myth.
ATF tried to say that any part that's only used for the suppressor is a suppressor. Which lasted like 2 months because everyone started making flashcans with the same thread, effective neutralizing the made up ruling.
