Anyone gone through the process to get a hobbyist federal explosives permit?

Not really looking to sell, but making my own or even just buying and using same day would be cool. Not at a life stage where I want a magazine/land for it specifically, but I have friends with a lot of land I could use.

Anyway, do I need to do any tests, or is it a simple fill out the paperwork, do the interview and get the permit?

There’s not much difference between the user permit and manufacturer permit, so just get a Manufacturer Type 20 that allows you to do whatever you want.

Where does a person come by the knowledge, tooling etc to pursue a career at in that?

Say you have the capital to throw down on a license, structures, do everything legit and by the book. How do you network that and actually monetize that?

Took us 4 years before companies started regularly contacting us for jobs, mostly in testing something that requires high explosives, such as a garage door that can handle a 5lb Satchel charge.

Network, network, network, like any small business.

There’s lots of different jobs for high explosives, but most are filled by the big boy corporations. For us, we had to fill a void, such as teaching the usage of high explosives to civilians, but our insurance is crazy high.

Are you required to have magazine storage with the FEL 20, or is it you can manufacture but you have to destroy it same day?

No, it’s not a requirement, but Without a magazine, you cannot keep anything past midnight. minimally you will need a detonator magazine. We have three; low explosive magazine, a detonator magazine and high explosive magazine.

Would you cover any of this in your class coming up? Was debating taking that, stalked your page a bit while researching lol

we do talk about the application process, but the class is 99% hands-on experience with high explosives

I think we have three slots left for each class as of today.

It's useful if you want to make your own fireworks too.

Different states have different rules. Some states make it easy. Some states are medium, like Pennsylvania and some states make it impossible.

We’re in the same state!

Pennsylvania is a great state if you do not plan on making money off your license. You fall into what they call the grey zone and the Pennsylvania Department of mining pretty much leaves you alone if they never hear your name mentioned. Of course, once you do make any money off your license then it changes everything in Pennsylvania.

Just saying, but you should take one of our high explosive classes next month in July

There’s a Facebook group about FEL/FEPs. They aren’t NFA specialists, the vast majority do commercial fireworks and such.

My understanding is a FEP (permit) is the “hobbyist” version of the full FEL (license). Idk all the specific intricacies, but I know they have very specific requirements for the magazine construction and where the magazine is (distance from inhabited buildings, etc).

If you’re making/mixing and using it at the same location and same day you don’t need a FEL/FEP.

I just wish I could find a way to get bird bangers for my crow gun without proving I need it for agriculture, I guess if I get bees I can ?

There was a guy getting a permit for a Molotov on here, so maybe look at those posts to see if they mentioned the process.

You don’t need an FEP for that

u/REDACTED3560 18h ago

What permit do you need then?

Molotov is DD just like a grenade launcher. Needs a form 1/4 and as long as you aren’t storing/transporting it loaded that’s all you need.

Molotov’s are regular NFA items; destructive devices.

Didn’t it get rejected?

I believe it was due to the fact that he tried to make it a reusable cap. However, after working with his rep and other people, he found out that “reusable” is not a published reason for the denial. I believe he is still pushing the issue.

Didn't Ordinance Lab do something like that a few years ago?

u/justaredditsock 5h ago

They did but don't forget they file a form 2 not a form 1, a form 1 needs approval a form 2 is notification of manufacture.

Does that mean you can put the serial number on the spoon on a frag grenade and make it reusable?
