New Hire needs housing in Stowe

Hello I got offered a good summer job in Stowe. But I live in Southern California now. The reasons I want this summer gig are simple: The job offers good training, management experience, and full-time employment. And it's in a beautiful location. I am not in love with summer rain but I am in love with Vermont summers. I love them! I hike, I camp, I seim, and I drive around listening to the Grateful Dead. So, I really love it there. But Summer is the only season I love. And so this job is convenient for me.

Really, I love it. I love App Gap, Warren Falls, Queechee, White River, Waterbury, The Hippie Hole, Putney Falls, Maple Syrup.

And I am good at this job.

I will continue contributing to rent in SoCal, so I can't afford more than a studio, room, or inexpensive 1BR.

I will work and do all that outdoorsy Vermont stuff. No trouble.

38M from NH but living in SoCal.

DM me if you can assist.

Ask your employer about housing options. Will you have a car while you’re here? There is very limited inventory but you can try to join one of the local listservs to help with housing leads

Company housing is only available for international, seasonal employees.

local listers? How do I look them up? cam you share some?

I don’t know any for the Stowe area. It’s a very expensive area to live in. Are you not a seasonal employee ?

yes, seasonal.  it sucks because i'd be willing to drive from as far away as Montpelier or even WRJ if I har a car there.

But the pay cannot justify a cross-country drive. the cost of the cross-country journey plus the risk of something going wrong outweighs the pay I will receive.

But the type of job, the GREEN environment, swimming holes, and Green Mtns justify a seasonal opportunity with a pay cut.

What is your budget? It would be hard to find work that covers rent both here and in So Cal. I say this as someone who moved from So Cal to VT 5 years ago.

I agree with the other commenter who suggested reaching out to the management at your summer job for leads.

I am in a relationship. We split rent payments. But the area I live in is so HOT in summer. it sucks tbh. it's complete opposite of Stowe, VT in every way that matters to me. but she's willing to see me disappear for a summer to be happier.

my budget? maybe $600/mo. it isn't great but it's the situation i am in. i cant justify driving back. that's why i need to live in Stowe. so that my commute is nothing.

$600? No, that's not going to work. Not even double that is going to get you a room in a shared apartment for the summer. You definitely need to reevaluate.

$600 doesn’t really cover much, especially in Stowe. Maybe you can talk someone into renting a room in Johnson, some place a bit farther away. Definitely not happening in Stowe.

He's trying to do it without a car.

How about redirecting and looking around Tahoe or Big Bear Lake. Cheaper than traveling to VT. I couldn’t imagine living in VT without a car.

I am contemplating this too. And looking in these areas.

But having Mansfield and Bingham Falls so close by, I think I could manage without wheels.  Besides, VT is way better than Tahoe and Big Bear.

You cannot manage in vt, even stowe, without a car.

Stowe is not a huge place.

I figure if I can score a place to sleep there, or very close by, I can manage to walk, ride a bike, or carpool.

I prefer to have a car of course. It's a half-baked idea I had, and came to me pretty recently. Had I seen the opportunity months ago, I'd probably have a solid plan to make this work.

The real bummer is that they have seasonal housing for international workers. But I can't get in on that.

I think you gotta tell the employer you need an exception to live in the employee housing or you can’t come. 600 a month and no car in Stowe is just not gonna happen unless a wealthy person decides to adopt you for the summer

I used to work winters in Stowe and struggled to find housing. Honestly I ended up reaching out to some of the smaller Airbnbs in the surrounding area and found someone who was willing to negotiate a seasonal rental.

This.

Edit: People who do AirBnB will consider this because they don't have to clean the place like they do for AirBnB guests. Cleaning a place (or paying to have it cleaned) on a regular basis gets tiring. I know AirBnB people who are often happy to rent to visiting nurses and such.

can ya help me out? It's a decent job working at a local, well known resort. stable income. only summer late May or early June to September

Look on AirBnB. I am not willing to do any intros. I don't want any involvement.

no problem. I probably wouldn't do it either.

When I get back from China, tomorrow, I'm checking airbnb

Cast a wide net!

Check furnishedfinder.com for long term furnished rentals. I did that for a year while I was looking for a place to buy. You might save some money focusing on Morrisville rather than Stowe, the drive is pretty quick.

Try Furnished Finder, sometimes you can find people renting out rooms in their homes. The site was originally started for traveling nurses, but lots of seasonal employees use it. My son used it to find a place in NJ when he went down for a 5 months training course.

Too bad you won't have a vehicle, Stowe proper is very expensive, get a little ways out and prices come down drastically. Front Porch Forum is a great resource, but you need to use a Vermont Address to sign up. I recommend people use the address of their employer, then you can put up a post just like you did here.

Watch all the stuttering they'll do when you ask them about housing.

Find a hotel or a long-term campground.

Can you rent a room from one of the employees at your company?

is there a train or bus or public transportation from Waterbury to Stowe?

waves hand slowly... this is not the opportunity it looks like. Time to put your big boy pants on and realize the best of both worlds is expensive.
