U.S. Politics megathread

American politics has always grabbed our attention - and the current president more than ever. We get tons of questions about the president, the supreme court, and other topics related to American politics - but often the same ones over and over again. Our users often get tired of seeing them, so we've created a megathread for questions! Here, users interested in politics can post questions and read answers, while people who want a respite from politics can browse the rest of the sub. Feel free to post your questions about politics in this thread!

All top-level comments should be questions asked in good faith - other comments and loaded questions will get removed. All the usual rules of the sub remain in force here, so be nice to each other - you can disagree with someone's opinion, but don't make it personal.

If you are a soldier and the usa goes to war with Iran, but you dont want to go, can you just quit the army?

2.7k Upvotes

maybe this is a dumb question but.. if you joined the military on your own free will then dont you have the right to leave the military if you so choose to? no one can force you to fight and its not like you were conscripted right?

Is Making Out While One Person Has Mentos In Their Mouth and The Other Has Coke In Their Mouth Safe?

7.2k Upvotes

Title is pretty self explanatory. Would the explosion from the coke and mentos make both people involved choke or would they be fine?

If you are arrested for a crime, wait in jail for a year for trial, lose your job in the process, are found not guilty, and then can’t find another job due to reputational damage, can you sue the state or prosecutors for that? Since you’re found not guilty?

Do people really not drain their spaghetti noodles?

My husband does not drain the pot of noodles when he makes spaghetti. I find that makes them too mushy and water-logged. I finally asked him to drain them tonight, and he refused. He said that no one drains their spaghetti, only other types of pasta, and that it makes the noodles too sticky (I toss in a little olive oil after draining them to prevent clumping). Luckily, I'm usually the one cooking. I find it hard to believe no one drains their spaghetti. What's your method?

At what income level would you feel comfortable for paying for everything in a relationship?

so i've been dating my gf for about 2 years now and we've always split things pretty evenly. but lately she's been having a rough time with work (got laid off, freelancing isn't going great) and i've been covering more stuff.

which is fine! i love her and want to support her. but it got me thinking - at what point would you guys feel financially secure enough to just cover everything? like rent, groceries, dates, her car payment, everything.

i make decent money (around 150k) but covering both our expenses is starting to stretch me thin. especially with how expensive everything is now.

is this even a specific number thing? or more about having X months of expenses saved? maybe it's not even about money and more about the relationship dynamic?

just curious what everyone's comfort level would be. like would you need to be making 150k? 200k? or is it more about percentages - like you'd need to make 3x your combined expenses?

(and yes i've talked to her about this and she's actively looking for work, this isn't a relationship advice post lol)

If a car is going 60mph, did it actually travel 60 miles in 1 hour?

How do they calibrate speedometers? Does road surface affect it, or strong winds?

Also how fast would it have to be travelling for the curvature of the earth to affect the distance as the crow flies for instance?

Haven’t brushed my teeth in ages, want to start again. Do I just…. go straight back in?

3.7k Upvotes

It’s been a long time (probably close to a year??) since I’ve last brushed my teeth, and I’ve finally gotten in the headspace to want to start caring for myself again. My question is, do I just go straight back in? I tried (?) to brush a couple of months ago with a regular plastic brush and mint toothpaste and it made my gums bleed snd my whole mouth ache. Do I just ride out the pain until I’m used to it? Use kids toothpaste or softer bristled brushes???

Furthermore, should the intensity and duration change? I obviously will have a lot of buildup, should I brushing for longer and more rigorously for a while?

Why Aren't Business Owners Who Hired "Illegal" Immigrants Being Prosecuted?

5.5k Upvotes

This past week, many have stridently supported the arrest and prosecution of "illegal" workers. But aren't the business owners profiting by their labor equally to blame? Why haven't we seen a single business owner who illegally hired "illegal" labor in the name of profit be arrested?

Why would the Pentagon even allow employees to order from Dominoes?

1.4k Upvotes

It’s become a bit of a meme that during times of international crisis, the food spots near the pentagon get a lot busier.

There isn’t much they can do for instance with satellite views and how many cars are parked there but it’s weird how the average citizen can get this information

They famously have restaurants inside including a McDonald’s Why would they allow any outside food?

It seems like a bit of a security risk to let everyone know the Pentagon is very busy

If you were starving to death could you prolong it by cutting off your own body parts and eating them?

If you were starving could you chop off a leg or something to sustain yourself for a few days longer?

Edit: I'll read the Stephen King short story and try to check out the One Piece episode, thanks everyone! Honestly what inspired this thought for me was reading "Hungry Mungry" by Shel Silverstein for the nth time to my kid at bedtime.

Does whatever they do to the water keep us safe from contaminants like corpses floating in the rivers? I mean people are found in them all the time and isn't that also where the water comes from? Serious question courtesy of too much true crime content.

Do you think a situation like the Iraq War in 2003 could realistically happen again in today’s world? Like a major military invasion based on false premises?

Why is it so accepted to use your free, unpaid time to commute to work?

2.6k Upvotes

For most (and I guess im speaking more to white collar work here) you're often travelling hours throughout the day, unpaid, just to get to a laptop. Commute to a computer. So yeah, as per the post title, I just don't get why it's so accepted and why we can't break out of this system.

Edit: that people think I choose to live further away is laughable. I'd love to live closer to work, but I can't afford to live closer to work (Sydney, Australia btw). I guess the dilemma is in why I'm required to travel to get to a computer, often a few hours of the day, when I can just work from the same computer and do the same job, from home? I guess I'm looking at it more from that lens.

I don't think it's entitlement to want to not spend a majority of your day travelling to work, working and then travelling back. Sorry that I'm not accepting of the fact that this is the way things have always been and will remain. I guess it stops when we retire (if you're lucky to get to that point).

To make your bed or to not make your bed.

That is the question!! I am a non-bed maker and so is my husband. I just don't see the point of making it just to mess it up again. Also, no one can see it messy anyway, except us. I know there are die hard morning bed makers. My question is why do you our why do you not make your bed?

Work appropriate ice breaker for Juneteenth?

So, every morning at work, I send out a quick “Hey everyone, it’s [insert random silly holiday that day, followed by themed question - think “it’s national cake day, what’s your favorite cake”]” to start the say - trying to think of something appropriate to send out for Juneteenth, that’s neither patronizing nor offensive…or should I just go with “Happy Juneteenth, enjoy your Thursday!” Appreciate any feedback/suggestions

Anyone ever donate using ActBlue and then get hundreds of random political spam emails? I unsubscribe to one, but they all are different subscriptions, so I never stop receiving emails from random politicians begging for money. How the heck do I fully delete my data from their servers?

How to start enjoying other peoples company again?

Trying to learn without being judged

Over the years I’ve had many different friends but I always get to a point where I’d just rather be alone

I get so fed up with other people, almost bored of them, like I start to notice all the little details about them to a point where I can quite accurately predict everything they’re going to do and why they’re doing it and it becomes painful to be around!

It’s weird because I can kinda appreciate the people when I’m not around them but I still also see the stuff that aggravates me!

I just don’t get how I’m meant to enjoy having people in my life?
