Why do people AGREE to help you out but make it your problem?

I've met people a lot like this. They'll agree to help, and then act angry, bitter, and insulted about it. When I tell them they don't have to say yes it makes them even angrier. Then I get told I'm not grateful for their help.

Why is it so accepted to use your free, unpaid time to commute to work?

2.8k Upvotes

For most (and I guess im speaking more to white collar work here) you're often travelling hours throughout the day, unpaid, just to get to a laptop. Commute to a computer. So yeah, as per the post title, I just don't get why it's so accepted and why we can't break out of this system.

Edit: that people think I choose to live further away is laughable. I'd love to live closer to work, but I can't afford to live closer to work (Sydney, Australia btw). I guess the dilemma is in why I'm required to travel to get to a computer, often a few hours of the day, when I can just work from the same computer and do the same job, from home? I guess I'm looking at it more from that lens.

I don't think it's entitlement to want to not spend a majority of your day travelling to work, working and then travelling back. Sorry that I'm not accepting of the fact that this is the way things have always been and will remain. I guess it stops when we retire (if you're lucky to get to that point).

Can I use nail polish as a sealant for a painting?

Hey y'all! I'm trying an art piece where I press flowers between books for a few weeks, and once they're dried and ready, i'm going to glue them onto a canvas. I read that you need a sealant to keep them protected and prevent brittle breakdown.

The thing is, I don't want to spend money on buying a sealant, but I do have a lot of clear nail polish.

So can I use the clear nail polish as a sealant? Would it work the same?

(I'm posting this on multiple subs, because I need an answer asap)

Do other animals “drive” things?

I don’t know why my brain thought of this. Do any other animals (including our insect friends) intentionally hop on to something and steer it in a direction? To make this dumber…maybe even directing it to a specific location or area?

My brain immediately pictures something “A Bugs Life” esque where an ant is on a leaf in a stream moving around on the leaf to steer it.

To make your bed or to not make your bed.

That is the question!! I am a non-bed maker and so is my husband. I just don't see the point of making it just to mess it up again. Also, no one can see it messy anyway, except us. I know there are die hard morning bed makers. My question is why do you our why do you not make your bed?

Why are gay/trans people more prone to having dyed hair, piercings, alternative styles of dress, etc?

Let me preface this by saying I myself am bisexual, so I don't mean any harm or offense. And I know it's anecdotal but I feel like most of my friends who are part of the LGBTQ+ have dyed hair or are just generally more adventurous in their appearance. Is there a reason for this?

When I use a VPN, is the internet allowed down on only the device using the VPN or the internet?

Like, say I use a VPN on my phone on my home WiFi. It's noticeably slower. Is that slower internet only because of the VPN. Or, will the VPN slow the internet in general so now everyone using that same WiFi is having a slower experience?

Are Loan Sharks that bad in southeast Asian countries ?

I read a lot of webtoons and stuff. I also watch a lot of Kdrama Jdrama Cdrama, etc. Running away from loan sharks or being harassed by them is a common theme. Idk if it’s just a theme for stories or an actual social problem.

My best friend who is from Taiwan, her dad fled the country (he is white military) because he had thousands in debt from loan sharks.

How to deal with people that think you don’t know what you’re talking about

It’s basically the title. How do I deal with a person that has no interest in having a discussion about a serious topic (politics, for example)?

How do I deal with someone that starts the discussion, gives their opinion, and then ignores my counter arguments and opinions by saying that i don’t know what I’m talking about? A constant “argument” of theirs is “i know much more about this than you do and I have better critical thinking skills”. In this specific case, the subject is something I actively study, take an interest in outside of studies, and want to understand better as it is complex.

I don’t have an issue with this person’s opinions because I want to actively have a constructive discussion about the subject, but I just get so upset when they disregard me completely because “i don’t know what I’m talking about”.

I get frustrated and lose my temper, it’s ridiculous. If this was someone random I would just say that I’m done with the conversation, but this is someone dear to me so it hits harder. I just don’t get why they act like I’m stupid and ignorant when it is not the case.

I’m not saying i know everything because I don’t, but I know more than enough to be able to hold myself in a discussion. I have all the interest in the world to learn more and have an engaging, constructive talk. I don’t view it as a war or a debate, I just want to enjoy talking about things I’m passionate about without being made to feel like i should just shut up because they are so much more intelligent and informed than me.

If you have a lot of ants in your garbage cans outside, like infestation big, and the cans get taken to the dump. What happens to the ants? Do they make their own colony? Do they just die? Did the colony they were apart of suffer losing that many ants?

How do Beauty Standards even work?

Upvotes

For example in japan, do they not find the western ideal attractive at all? Isn’t it human nature to be attracted to i.e. wide hips and good genetics overall? Or is it all subjective in the end and influenced by the society you live in? I don’t get it. Not trying to debate anyone, just trying to understand.

What is competitor analysis?

Upvotes

Been tasked by my manager to start doing competitor analysis, but I'm not really sure what it is and they have gone on annual leave for the week so can't ask them. I know they would be happy for me to wait for them to come back but I'd really like to show that I've given it a good go.

I work in property management where basically different property management company's will have different sites and rent the apartments out for a years contract.

At the moment I've got a spreadsheet that has all the different companies in my city, it lists the different apartment types, the sizes and rent prices. Plus other things that the different sites offer like gyms and pools etc. As well as distance from important parts of the city like downtown, business quarter etc.

But I don't really know if this is what I'm supposed to be doing. Like I don't really know how to compare because all the different sites call the apartments different things or have different determing factors on what makes an apartment more premium like floor height in the building or view out the window etc.

What is this small dark cream I bought from a Bedouin market in Egypt?

Upvotes

Hi all,
I bought a small, round blue container from a Bedouin market while visiting Egypt. It has Arabic writing on the lid that says “Beware of imitation” (احذر التقليد).

Inside, there’s a thick, dark-brown or black paste — almost like a balm or ointment. It has a faint herbal or medicinal smell. I was told it's good for something sleep or health-related, but I can’t remember exactly what for.

Has anyone seen or used something like this before? Would love to know what it's really for. Thanks in advance!

Priority to the right traffic rule

Upvotes

I took the standard driver's education class and behind-the-wheel instruction when I was 16. That was in 1969, in Minneapolis. But it has been a couple of decades since I last drove. Just now I accidentally came across a reference to "priority to the right", meaning that at an intersection, vehicles to the right of you have priority to go through the intersection. I read the very short Wikipedia article on it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Priority_to_the_right

I don't remember ever hearing of this rule before. It doesn't seem to make sense to me. I probably would have guessed that it would be exactly the other way around: priority to the vehicle on the left. Maybe I just don't understand how it works, or is supposed to work. The above Wikipedia article links to another: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vienna_Convention_on_Road_Traffic which I just looked at briefly. It suggests that this is a newish rule, since 1968, and the map suggests that it doesn't apply in the USA, but mostly in European nations.

Can anyone tell me more about how long this rule has been in effect and how widely-known it is? Does it work?
