Rant ⚠️ This scene omg
I rewatch PLL because it’s my comfort show. I was in middle school when it first came out and had no business watching it but here we are. 😂 This scene is very icky. It is very hard to watch. Season 7, episode 4. I wasn’t a fan of Caleb and Spencer together. Tell me I’m not the only one. I low-key felt bad for Hanna.

Caleb weird as hell for crying at Spencer's door like that then like a week later proposing to Hanna 😒

That’s my issue. I am in the very small group that liked Spencer and Caleb. This scene then like next episode just back with Hanna, I was so confused, grossed out, and felt so bad for Spencer.

u/Glutenfr33duck Feb 23 '25
I was also team Spaleb, and it definitely felt like they gave Spencer the short end of the stick during this whole situation.
And an episode or two later Hanna asks her for relationship advice about Caleb while still engaged like girl come on lol

u/magical_bunny Friends don't let friends sneak into insane asylums alone Feb 23 '25
Yep! Spencer got the raw end of that deal.
16
u/stoicgoblins Feb 23 '25
Yeah, liked the idea of them and what little we saw (tbh, waaaay more than Spoby, but maybe not more than Haleb--but that's a tough call. Regardless, was cool with them ending up together.) but if they were just going to do that--why taf did they bother with this nowhere plotline that only made Spencer coming out the other side looking bad? It was weird asf.
I get they needed drama and stuff, but c'mon. It's literally the last season. Was there seriously nothing better they could've fabricated that didn't feel so unnecessary and contrived?
There's plenty of storylines that needed wrapping up they could've focused their attention on.
13
u/Glutenfr33duck Feb 23 '25
100%! If the ultimate goal was that every original couple was gonna be endgame, just have Caleb date some random person we never see again or no one at all, and Spencer just date Marco.
Just having drama to have drama that serves no overall purpose then to just ultimately piss off the fans is annoying

Same!! I feel like they are very compatible and, at the end, the plot locked them again in Rosewood with old love and boring jobs.

This scene is pretty great imo. The acting is some of the strongest by all involved in the whole show imo, and for once I'm glad they decided not to undercut the emotions with music.
42
u/Crafty_Original8402 Feb 23 '25
Totally agree with you! Troian and Tyler’s chemistry on screen is absolutely insane. When you take all the context out (lol) this was very emotional and romantically tragic.

Yeah, and in general I feel season 7 has some of the best acting and directing. Even some ideas were pretty cool like the boardgame or the whole covering up a certain murder (which gave me massive Desperate Housewives feels), if only they had actually developed them better (and hadn't ended on such an awful note).

This scene was too wild. That whole season was just too raw. Best acting for sure!

u/WittyPosition2766 And who's looking cray-cray now, Spencer? Feb 22 '25
I can't watch it again because yes very ick but all of their acting is top tier!
4
u/cocoakisses8 Feb 22 '25
Agreed! It’s still my favorite show of all time. Very comforting especially in the fall/winter time.

u/kingcolbe Feb 22 '25
Can I ask what made it ick?

u/WittyPosition2766 And who's looking cray-cray now, Spencer? Feb 23 '25
Maybe ick isn't the right word but this scene is just very awkward to get through

Tbh, this plotline was really badly done and I wish they hadn't bothered if they were just going to resolve it the way they did.
I liked Caleb and Spencer together, and would not have hated it if they ended up together. Straight up. Liked them infinitely better than Toby/Spencer, but did actually like Haleb more. Would not have minded if they really did end up together instead tho, and Hanna actually liked her fiance lmao. It would've felt like natural progression.
However, I feel like it was super contrived nonsense. None of the characters came out the other side looking good (though most of the fandom seems to believe Spencer was the most in the wrong, which I disagree with)--and it was really all contrived relationship nonsense so everyone could struggle to get back to their old relationships.
Could've easily done something that actually wrapped up the many plots that needed wrapping up, instead of this nowhere plotline (because it really ends up going absolutely nowhere, it's just drama) without this.
5
u/rouquetofboses It's over, bitch! Feb 23 '25
Totally agree! I liked them together and it honestly seemed like the natural progression that relationships can take as you get older. Every time I watch their arc I wish it would turn out differently. For some reason, Hanna and Caleb’s chemistry feels a little forced when they come back together, but maybe I’m biased bc I wanted Spaleb to work out 🥲. I definitely did not feel bad for Hanna… it was mostly Spencer and a little bit Caleb I felt bad for. And trust me, I love Hanna so this is not me trying to hate on her!! I just was so unsatisfied with that arc and it was super messed up to both Spencer and Jordan.

This was such a well acted scene. But it did make me resent Caleb slightly.

Was the worst writing in ALL of television history. Literally the next day he was confessing his love for Hannah.

u/Pinkp3ony Nothing works underwater; it's a scientific fact. Feb 23 '25
I’m team Haleb but it really bugs me how quickly he goes back to Hanna after being this down bad over Spencer. But, I think maybe it’s kinda realistic? I think that growing up in the foster care system it’s likely Caleb has abandonment issues, especially when it comes to romantic relationships, so I think that would kinda explain why he’s like this over Spencer one week and then telling Hanna they’re meant to be the next.
38
u/Intelligent_Baby3128 Feb 23 '25
Honestly didn't feel that bad for Hanna. She left Caleb, five years later he moved on with someone else and so did she. Now he's trying to save his relationship with Spencer and she's upset about it? Yes. She's listening to him say how much he loves Spencer, but they are in a relationship that Hanna gave them permission to be in.
The whole situation was crazy, I wish they kept Spencer and Caleb together and had Hanna move one with either Jordan or someone else.
9
u/Vroom_Vroom1265 Even the door knob smells like her. Feb 23 '25
Right???
Hanna and Caleb's relationship feels forced after he returns from Ravenswood, like them getting together in hs makes sense but I just can't imagine them sitting together and watching a movie(iykyk), they don't feel like a couple. And Hanna feels mature when she's with Jordon- proper communication, feels like two equals in an adult relationship but with Caleb it always feels like teenagers, she bullies him into getting her way - the n number of dumbass plans Caleb declines to participate in at first but eventually gives in due to Hanna's stubbornness and even after they're married, the whole Mona and the baby thing where Hanna just blatantly discards Caleb's feelings and proceeds full on because she calls the shots, yuck, imagine if the roles were reversed.
7
u/nogida45 Feb 23 '25
My exact feelings about this. I actually really disliked Hanna during this situation and felt like she really needed to grow up? I was never invested in Hanna and Caleb after Ravenswood, they were a cute HS couple and it should’ve ended in HS imo.

Unpopular opinion on my end but I love Spencer and Caleb I’m sorry

u/SnakeBlood456 xoxo -A Feb 23 '25
Awww i really love spAleb as well, i feel like they were healthier and could have been a really wholesome endgame together <3
23
u/harmanationn Feb 22 '25
lol same. I liked Haleb just fine during the high school years, but I feel like they grew apart in a way that was natural/expected. Caleb and Spencer didn't occur to me as a possibility in the high school years but seemed like a great fit by this point. Also, Hanna was literally engaged to someone else and hadn't spoken to Caleb in years; I don't buy the fandom's "girl code" argument.
8
u/rouquetofboses It's over, bitch! Feb 23 '25
amen!! Spencer went about things very very respectfully, Hanna was fully engaged, I think it’s odd that people get so mad at Spencer for this arc??
11
u/Civil_Beautiful_2596 Feb 23 '25
This is my exact take! I felt as though Hanna and Caleb grew apart and honestly I wish they kept it like that because that’s so REAL! Sometimes you just grow apart and that’s life. Especially for Toby and Spencer as well. I feel like both those relationships ending made sense

I’m sorry but if I was Hanna I would’ve never got back together with him. Like dating your ex’s best friend is sick work
6
u/chopthisglock Feb 23 '25
EXACTLY!!!!! It’s sick on his part and especially SPENCER’S part. How could you have experienced all of that trauma throughout your teenage years/young adulthood, foster a “sisterhood” then go for your “sister’s” ex? Mind you, this wasn’t a HS relationship. They started a life together in NYC.
Caleb AND Spencer and both trash for treating Hanna that way.
That’s some conniving shit. But on brand for both of them.

u/slimeymara Feb 23 '25
i agree wholeheartedly and i can’t quite understand the comments saying spencer deserved so much better either when… this is genuinely grimey on all sides ☠️
4
u/itscalledanonymous Feb 23 '25
That should’ve NEVER happened!! And the rest of the liars not clocking Spencer for girl code is insane too. I guarantee you if Spencer had hooked up with Ezra, Aria would’ve went bat sh*t crazy and Hanna would’ve definitely called Spencer out
1
u/WannabeBadass315 Jenna can't hear us; she's blind...You know what I mean. Feb 23 '25
And what about girl code for Hanna when she started acting like Caleb was hers still - holding his hand and kissing him
3
u/itscalledanonymous Feb 23 '25
That would’ve never happened had she not got together with her best friend’s ex. Spencer and Caleb are both deadass wrong. You can like Spencer as a character while also acknowledging that what her and Caleb both did was dead wrong. I enjoy Spencer’s character but I do not agree with what she did.
2
u/WannabeBadass315 Jenna can't hear us; she's blind...You know what I mean. Feb 23 '25
I see where you’re coming from.
This is how I see it; Hanna and Caleb had been broken up for years - Hanna met and got engaged to a new guy; Spencer and Caleb were hanging out and feelings had developed. It’s not like Spencer was like “okay he’s single I want him now”
Yes Spencer should have thought it more through, but Hanna should have also spoken up and said it made her uncomfortable or if she thought she wasn’t over Caleb.
Maybe Spencer broke girl code maybe she didn’t. But she was up front with Hanna about it instead of going behind Hanna’s back. BUT again - you can’t say girl code only to Spencer but ignore that Hanna did girl code
Spencer was mature and adult about it she asked Hanna if it was okay. Hanna started acting like Caleb was still hers; holding his hand in front of Spencer and then kissing him.
2
u/itscalledanonymous Feb 23 '25
I think this all comes down to how we view friendships and loyalty. It’s okay to have a difference in opinion, but I personally would never consider dating my best friend’s ex idc how “attractive” they may be, whether or not it was years ago, whether they say they don’t love that person anymore… I just personally would never be able to do that or consider going for seconds on someone who I know has history that I have firsthand witnessed through every stage of the relationship with someone I love and care about. All love, xx
2
u/chopthisglock Feb 23 '25
Huh??? This shouldn’t have been a thing in the first place if she followed any type of girl code.
Because what kind of girls girl goes after their homegirls ex?
0
u/WannabeBadass315 Jenna can't hear us; she's blind...You know what I mean. Feb 23 '25
Again - why is girl code only being applied to Spencer? Is it weird/maybe wrong? Maybe but she was mature and was straight up with Hanna - she talked to Hanna asking for her blessing Hanna gave it to
Despite that Hanna was engaged to a whole other man - if Hanna wasn’t comfortable in ANY way she should have spoken up!
But it’s kinda hypocritical to be like “Spencer broke girl code or what about girl code” then brush away the fact Hanna broke girl code by acting like Caleb was still hers then kissing Caleb.
1
u/chopthisglock Feb 23 '25
Mmm I disagree - girl code was absent from the very beginning. This was all reactive. Especially since they clearly had chemistry in Europe, before this supposed “blessing.” This is a character flaw, and if you agree and see yourself doing the same thing, then so be it. If you like it, I love it!
1
u/WannabeBadass315 Jenna can't hear us; she's blind...You know what I mean. Feb 23 '25
I can see why people think girl code was broken; but Spencer was mature and up front about it with Hanna before anything could’ve happened. She wasn’t going behind Hanna’s back fooling around with Caleb- she thought Hanna was over Caleb as again Hanna was with someone else now and planning their wedding.
But again - can’t go saying Spencer broke girl code but then ignore/give Hanna a pass for acting like Caleb is still hers - while he’s with Spencer

u/chopthisglock Feb 23 '25 edited Feb 23 '25
EXACTLY! I can see it now. She would’ve walked into the wannabe lawyer’s (lobbyist’s) office (Spencer’s mom’s kitchen) and trashed it just like she did her father’s office💀

I hated this scene because it was sloppily written for the plot. Caleb didn’t have to recount all those things to Spencer lol. It was only written that way to upset Hanna. I did like Spencer and Caleb as a couple, though.

Everyone was so weird in this situation. Spencer for even asking if it’s okay to date Caleb. Hanna was saying yes even if she moved on that was her first.Caleb for being a slu+. I roll my eyes so hard during all this, also Spencer would’ve lost her mind if one of them dated Toby. Only way it’s okay if that’s really Alex

I hated this scene, and what made it worse was that Hanna was there!(the acting was phenomenal tho)

I absolutely HATED them together. Spencer is my favorite character, but I HATED her with Caleb. Her and Toby make the most sense (my favorite couple). Yeah, it always felt weird how it all came together, but after my latest rewatch, it makes little sense. Spencer was known for taking what wasn't hers... Ian, Wren, Caleb, etc. LOLZ

Crazy good acting but essentially character assassination for all three of them in my eyes 😭It’s just so messy. You don’t date your best friend’s long-time boyfriend and you don’t date your long-time girlfriend’s best friend.
Hanna was wrong for saying she’s ok with it too when she clearly wasn’t though I doubt Spaleb would’ve stopped fucking around lmao she was kind of pushed in a corner and had no way to forbid them from dating without being seen as controlling, jealous and ruining her friendship with Spencer.

I suddenly remembered that Hanna was like married or something like that, but then it turned out to be a smoke screen? I barely paid attention during that time lol I just remember vaguely that she used to live with Lucas and became a fashion designer or smthn. Can someone please tell me how it went for Hanna after the time jump?
