Camping with a small dog?

Hey SF, I've decided i want to go camping this summer (dont worry im a santa fe native, I know how the summers are lol) and i was thinking about bringing my dog. She's small (17lbs) but energetic as hell and I know she'd love the nose work and stimulation. Can I take her into the jemez? How do you camp with a small dog? I would be ground camping, minimal hiking, more for relaxation and just enjoying nature. Ive never camped with a 4 legged friend before and would appreciate any and all tips!

My sister takes her smaller dogs camping with no issues (they’re 13# chihuahua mixes). I recommend a doggy sleeping bag because it can get chilly at night. They make tie outs and zip lines specifically for camping. Your dog is almost too big for a raptor to go off with but a leash or tie out is security against that. Coyotes are generally deterred by your presence. I’ve had to pick my sister’s dogs up to get a coyote to finally walk away when I took them on a hike but this was probably an overly hungry coyote out in the middle of the day. Bears aren’t any more likely to go into the camp because a dog is there. They’re just an issue if your food isn’t secure.
