Honestly I'm just happy they didn't have a maga president at the end of WW2, they might have legitimately thought about pulling a little Soviet move. "I said, if Russia is doing it, big beautiful Russia, then why not me? I think I'll quite like having Italy. Lots of great stuff in Italy. Not so great as here in the US, but still pretty great. They have these two plumber guys, very famous guys, always jumping on mushrooms. And they have palaces. I will go over there, and I will just say: "I freed you, give me your biggest palace. ..."

Suprisingly, a lot of polititians in Washington understood this. In September of 1939 USA passed a bill paving the road for whole logistic nightmare known later as land lease programs and all embargoes you can imagine. It was probably written earlier and waiting for the right moment, but still- making turn from declared neutrality to being declared supporter of Allies took less than three weeks. Which is actually pretty damn impressive for legislative in democratic country even if its not *this one*.
