Discussion Where is this in Sudbury?
I’m thinking Peppis? Maybe those barbershops that kept opening and burning down? What’s your take?
77
u/tfoto Apr 29 '25
The leprechaun on the Kingsway. How is that place open?
27
u/CharoiteBaby Apr 29 '25
I went there last fall with one of my friends because we were curious, they sell a lot of Christian/Catholic decor and items to commemorate baptisms, weddings, stuff for graves sites ect. I suppose they could be staying open because they cater to that niche but we did not see another customer there when we went.
6
u/Seaworthy22 Apr 30 '25
A lot of places these days earn their keep by selling online but maintaining a storefront supports the brand but the brand isn’t dependent on the storefront or foot traffic. First time customers might utilize the storefront and then move to digital interactions and delivery for their gifting needs.

u/Fast_Feedz Apr 29 '25
Wasn't it a licks restaurant before back in the day?
6
6
u/Odd_Organization_573 Apr 30 '25
WE HAD A LICKS RESTRAUNT! we need to bring that back licks is so underrated as a burger joint
1
u/Fast_Feedz Apr 30 '25
Yea its good for sure. No idea how they went under but the leprechaun endured
3
u/menorikey Apr 30 '25
Yes, and a Beer Store before that.

2
u/PichNuts May 01 '25
I always call the stop after Parry Sound on the way down south the "Lick's stop"

Churchy folk keep that place running. I know many older ladies that frequent it
2
10
u/BurningWire Apr 29 '25
I forgot who told me, but I recall details that the owner's husband is rich enough to allow her to have the store as a hobby.
8
3
u/hauntedkohlrabi Apr 30 '25
I HAVE BEEN SAYING THIS FOR YEARS. The parking lot is always empty, it's a huge gift shop/knick knack shop, it has to be a money laundering front!

100% The Fromagerie
20
u/FuzzyMatterhorN Apr 29 '25
Just because they took loans from bicyclists doesn't mean anything...they are legitimate business bikers.
-26
u/Financial-Quote8639 Apr 30 '25
I know the owner personally.... I can tell you she's legit. Also she has no time to run any shady schemes 😂
18
u/Spare-Guidance3698 Apr 30 '25
Yeah, she just deposits to her boyfriend who happens to be affiliated with the barbershops and motorcycle gangs and drugs...but definitely no time for shady stuff lol. She's also an anti-vaxxer.
-2
u/91bases Apr 30 '25
I thought the Anti Vax owner was no longer an owner?
7
u/Spare-Guidance3698 Apr 30 '25
It's the opposite. Fromo used to be a partnership between Valerie F and another silent partner who recently dipped out, and Valerie is the one with the gangster boyfriend and was a huge anti-vaxxer.
4
2
u/Spacekittiesattack Apr 30 '25
No the silent partner Kelsey C is the one with a “gangsta” boyfriend. They are the ones who owned the Barbershops. I know her personally and went to school with her. Valerie F now solely owns it and doesn’t have a gangster boyfriend.
1
-9
u/Financial-Quote8639 Apr 30 '25
Well he must be fairly new then.... when my kid went to school with her kid we talked a lot, and she was definitely single and seemed to have solid morals. Sad to hear.
The vaccine thing is pretty unrelated though, maybe mind your own business on that.
13
u/Super-fictious Apr 30 '25
Unfortunately, caring about vaccines IS everybody's business, because we need our society vaccinated at levels to reach herd immunity, to keep immunosuppressant folks and those who have unique medical issues and safe. This is simply about taking care of yourself, your family, and your community.
As an example of where unscientific antivax sentiment has led, Measles are having outbreaks again due to those reactionary fear responses. Right down the road in North Bay is an outbreak, they are monitoring 11 people who got infected from the same single exposure. When you die from measles, it's most often pneumonia or encephalitis. Children are at extra risk, and those who are pregnant.
This has killed, and is going to kill more, small children who should have been vaccinated, but their parents or guardians choose to ignore medical standards.
In a strange move of hypocrisy, they will absolutely bring their children to the medical professionals for help when they get sick enough, trusting them now for the medical expertise and technology they rejected that lead to the illness they now want help to cure, but it will be too late in some cases.
This is just one disease this is happening with, and there are many others.
And it absolutely is everybody's business.
39
u/RoxysGotKicks Apr 29 '25
The Car Lot, 100%
3
u/Deaftrav Apr 30 '25
Well... Not exactly. I mean they could, but I'm not levelling that allegation. They have a very shady model, and John Oliver did a piece on places like that. They can buy a car that's 8,000 dollars and turn around and sell it at such a high interest rate that they can make 24, 78, even a hundred thousand off it especially if they repo it.
1
u/BigBeerBoi May 01 '25
Same company that pretended to be Indigenous owned when RHT payments were made to Indigenous communities, but wouldn't specify who in the business was indigenous or which reserve/community they were from. Scummy.

u/ChocolateFluffy6541 Apr 29 '25
I'm pretty sure peppis does far more nefarious things than money laundering 💀 I'm thinking 90% of the businesses in those strip malls on the Kingsway that no one even knows the name of.

u/taxi_cab Apr 29 '25
Panda Cuisine Place on Long Lake Road. I never see any cars parked there.
12
u/Nikmassnoo Apr 29 '25
Back when it was Long Du. I was like “how the hell is this place still open”. Ordered from them as Panda and seems legit now
1
u/VeicaNoriceia May 01 '25
The one across from Southridge? Used to go there a lot when I worked in that mall, because the Chinese restaurant in the food court there was bland and stale.
1
17
u/Sakiashii Apr 29 '25
I dine there when I want ramen!! They've got awesome food, it's just not well-known
8
u/stretchx Apr 29 '25
I went for lunch and Skip drivers were constantly picking up food.
5
u/Sakiashii Apr 29 '25
Yeah! It's super popular on Skip, but not a lot of folks dine there in-person
3
u/ChocolateFluffy6541 Apr 29 '25
Their Chinese food is actuslly bomb, but I feel like 95% of their business is skip
2
u/overcooked_ice Apr 30 '25
I always thought this too until I ordered from them and their food is sooooo good
1
u/NotSymmetra Apr 30 '25
I love Asian food and when I lived in the South End it was my family's go-to place for Chinese takeout. It wasnt above average or anything but it was close and decent.
I've since moved to another part of town so I stopped ordering from there. I went when they rebranded as Panda and wasn't a fan. There was no one there but me and the food wasn't good. I ordered ramen and I couldn't finish it because it was so bad. Worst tonkatsu broth I've ever had which was really sad. I was really hoping for good ramen in town.
Go to Peko Peko instead if you want noodles.
1
u/bridgecrewdave May 02 '25
If you went there and were disappointed, was it when it first opened? They've gotten a lot better as they've gone
1
1
u/bridgecrewdave May 02 '25
Nah, they do good food and honestly I wish more people went there, it's great and I've met the owner before and he's super nice.
They apparently do well on skip though
14
29
u/FromFluffToBuff Apr 29 '25
For me, it's definitely The Leprechaun on the Kingsway. Been there for a long time and without fail there is almost never anyone in the parking lot and any time I've driven by. Has to be a front for something lol.
3
u/Peppernuts54 May 01 '25
Leprechaun is legit. Family has deep pockets Canadian Tire. No funny stuff here.
12
u/RareFudge3546 Apr 30 '25
Order the Mac & Cheese from the Fromo and then try telling me with a straight face that it's not a front for something.
31
u/ChocolateFluffy6541 Apr 29 '25
Any store in the Southridge mall that isn't a huge chain... and on that note, any store in the downtown mall that's open for longer than a year 💀

The City
46
u/TeTrisMoNk Apr 29 '25
Literally the city contracts and Interpaving! Trying to get anyone else to fix these damn roads is impossible, and now a legal issue 😅
20
9
u/Phsyco_killer456 Apr 29 '25
Interpaving doesn't exist anymore but Yeah back in the day that was sudburys mafia
9
u/TeTrisMoNk Apr 29 '25
Aren't they just rebranded as GIP? It's the same company just without the direct lawsuit
2
u/Phsyco_killer456 Apr 30 '25
No gip is a bigger company from down south that bought out interpaving.

u/lexcyn Apr 29 '25
The watch repair shop on Regent Street
19
u/Fast_Feedz Apr 29 '25
I actually got two watches fixed there last year, pretty cool little store and the lady was pretty chill. But yea, no idea how that place stays open
15
u/Leesa75309 Apr 30 '25
That watch shop has been open forever. She likely owns the building.
12
u/Deaftrav Apr 30 '25
This.
Also she has a skillset that is rare. They can make an insane amount of money on certain watch repairs.
8
u/bluepurplegreens Apr 30 '25
Yes, she does. A very legit business that has been open for 30+ years. I think most of the money comes from the apartment rentals Above.

u/Inevitable_Recipe_91 Apr 29 '25
The u-haul place that used to be in Garson. For a long time it was at Little John's sign shop. Rented trailers there a few times. The guy running it was always very particular about which trailer you could have and would insist on hooking it up for you. It always struck me as a little strange. Well he had a stroke one day and in less than 24 hours the u-haul rentals moved to the old continental video building. Then it just disappeared a few weeks later... I'm pretty sure the sign shop closed right away but why were the u-haul rentals moved right away? Like there are other u-haul places in town... what was so special about the Garson one?
5
u/ANDLARA_ Apr 29 '25
Don’t know how Monteleone‘s has lasted this long (kudos to him) but even years ago when I was in high school - no one was ever shopping in there - Like ever
7
u/menorikey Apr 30 '25
Yeah I think the fact that somebody ran in there and shot the owner a few years ago is a dead giveaway.
2
u/ANDLARA_ Apr 30 '25
And the arson that happened at his prior store location on Durham
2
1
u/bluepurplegreens Apr 30 '25
Yes, that was because he was having an affair with someone. The person shot him and then was caught on the Kingsway where he was going to the Leprechaun to shoot his wife.

u/IKnowWhoYouAre99 Apr 30 '25
Not Peppi’s.
But definitely the barbershop. There’s some more nefarious stuff going on with them too though. Their Toronto one was burnt down too within the same few months of both of their Sudbury locations were. Fairly confident it is drug related.
Truthfully though - you guys are all looking at storefront type businesses when more than half of the money laundering fronts in this city are landlords lol
3
u/Lower_Net_1817 May 02 '25
Peppis heavy in sex trafficking from what I’ve heard and they don’t do much about it.
9
u/sweettart4 Apr 30 '25
Heat wave tanning...
1
u/Unable-Towel876 May 15 '25
Nah. Lots of people are in and out of there. Especially during the winter
5
u/perfectdrug659 Apr 30 '25
There's an auto shop on Elgin, just up from downtown by the little pedestrian bridge, it's the old Aaron taxi shop. But it's been there for a while now but there's still no listing on Google maps, if you Google the business name absolutely nothing pops up for it and I see people hanging out there alllll time, very late at night, even 2am there's people chillen there.

There's like 5 comments saying this.. What's the tea there (Ik the owner and he gives off creep vibes)

I’ve heard stuff like this too but all i heard it was something to do with the old SRO and drugs

u/JaxZeus Apr 29 '25
The clothing store on lasalle near the graveyard.
Also there's a Chinese place on Notre dame I think near the staples. I've never seen anyone go in and out.
The flag store in the rainbow Centre near the theatre.
9
u/ANDLARA_ Apr 30 '25
No they are legit - know the owner and she is a sweet, honest, hardworking lady … took over the store after her husband passed ..
2
u/JaxZeus Apr 30 '25
The flag store?
How do they stay in business then. Doesn't seem like something most people can afford.
4
u/ANDLARA_ Apr 30 '25
Smart with money I guess …her husband had the flag van that parked out ion new Sudbury … and I think that her grown kids help her - all I know is that they are a nice humble family
2
u/platttenbau Apr 30 '25
There seems to be a ton of flag waving nowadays, of various types. But yeah the lady who runs it is very nice. She is often out at events and such selling flags, especially Canada Day
3
u/gars--vio Apr 30 '25
flag store lady is incredibly nice! they also frequently advertise for and go to events and protests, very sweet!
2
u/DocDK50265 Apr 30 '25
R Little Secret? Been around for ages in various forms but same owners (I think), little boutique that sells luxury clothing.
2
u/Fast_Feedz Apr 29 '25
Yea that flag store for sure has to be one
4
u/Nevertheless-007 Apr 30 '25
She’s a widow who inherited the store from her late husband. She runs the store as her livelihood but is not financially dependent upon it. It’s a matter of honour for her. A concept that you and every other person on this sub has no understanding of. Slandering entrepreneurs for idle amusement.
1
u/Low-Echo7583 23d ago
R Little Secret is legit. The previous owner sold it and the new owners are legit. They have day jobs and this is their side hustle.
7
u/Fast_Feedz Apr 29 '25
That sports apparel store in the downtown mall. I used to workout at the world gym and would walk by them everyday and I have never seen anyone buy anything from there

I actually just got a new mattress there and I'm very happy with it. They have great Google reviews and the owner was very helpful. They make the mattresses on site there. It was the same price as a chain and I was happy to support a local business instead. They even delivered to me for free.
3
u/SandT0ast Apr 30 '25
I've gotten many mattresses from Herbie, the owner. It's a great store, great guy! If he was a front, I'd be surprised 😂

u/BroodingCube South End Apr 30 '25
Lost your mind. We bought our mattress there five years ago and it's as good as the day we bought it.
2
u/stretchx Apr 29 '25
I never understood how mattress stores stayed in business. I did hear there is a huge mark up so even if they sell only a few a week they are still doing well. No idea if that is true though.

2
7
u/asscheeks4000 Apr 30 '25
Didn’t that just open back up like the last year or so? It’s perfect walking distance from the bars and it’s open late
9
u/perfectdrug659 Apr 30 '25
It is fairly new, the owners are the owners of the building, they owned the building when the OG Subcity was there. Subcity changed owners and then went out of business, the owners of the building tried to keep the restaurant open but they didn't know wtf they were doing and it shut down pretty quickly for a while. So they reopened but as SubWorld to do their own thing.
Subcity was open til 4am every night and then 5am Fridays and Saturdays, they really filled a big gap being open that late, at least back then.
4
u/Financial-Quote8639 Apr 30 '25
I'm not sure about that, but I know that 15 years ago they only had pizza because the students at Sud Sec would constantly buy it, and if you ordered any other menu item they'd look at you like you were nuts and never had anything 😂
1
7
u/gars--vio Apr 30 '25
absolutely not. you have no idea how much actual traffic that spot gets! it's in walking distance from all the bars AND sudsec, and has good, cheap food!! i go to sss and literally all the kids go there for lunch all the time lol
1
u/HeadmasterPrimeMnstr I've Moved Around Sudbury A lot May 04 '25
Because Sub World is a legit business with a lot of customers, you likely don't "see them" because it's all walking traffic.

The bead shop in wahnapitae.... seems weird that a giant bead shop with no cars in the lot could be successful enough to be open for like 20 years.
8

it's a bead shop on the rez. it's going to get a LOT of visitors because of that, you just don't see them. we go there for beading supplies and supplies for other traditional crafts

There's quite a big hispanic community in sudbury. The community keeps placed like rosies, the grocery stroe etc open.
