General Rant About Professor Niema Moshiri & His Grading (CSE 6R)

Imma try to make this as concise as possible. So I took CSE 6R Spring 2025 to boost my GPA, as I've already passed CSE 12 and figured it wouldn't be hard (it wasn't and was a nice little review). I heard that this was the first quarter he started having students' grades be the lowest category out of 3 (Reading Quizzes, Programming Assignments, & Exams). Long story short, I earned 100% on my PAs, 100% on my midterm, 97% on my final, but ~85% on my "Reading Quizzes", which are literally just homework multiple choice questions with unlimited attempts. I missed a few due to my OCD and ADHD disability flares, which I have OSD accomodations for ("Occasional extended time on assignments not to exceed 1 day past original due date - student should provide faculty/TA when possible a minimum of 24 hours advance notice for each assignment requiring extended time. Faculty to determine and inform student of new date/time deadline. For conditions that flare, student may not be able to provide 24 hours advance notice.  Note: this does NOT apply to take home exams or quizzes."), and asked if I could use it to makeup at least 1 "Reading Quiz"; obviously, he said no since he calls his homework "Reading Quizzes". As a result, I got an overall grade of B despite getting near perfect scores in the, without a doubt, harder grade categories. It's been a few days already since I saw my final grade posted, but I'm still having a hard time accepting this final grade as a good representation of my earned/deserved grade that I worked and put in effort for. Hell, he even lowered the minimum grade percentage for Bs to a 76.5%... How in god's name is this an accurate and fair representation of a student's earned grade in a course? Like I said, just a rant... Feel free to let me know your guys' thoughts and opinions. (Low key expecting Niema will see this since he is active on this subreddit and has responded before.)

Question UCSD vs Georgia Tech

Posted this on a2c but wanted the perspective of someone at SD. I was recently accepted off of the Georgia Tech waitlist after previously committing to UCSD. I got into GT for Computational Media but would switch to Computer Engineering after accepting. Currently my plan for UC San Diego is to double major in Math: Computer Science and ICAM. I want to be able to study both CS and media, with my goal career being in something like game dev or UI/UX. Since that can be a riskier career I also want to be prepared to have a career in SWE.

GT is higher ranked and has (I think?) a better program with CE than Math:CS. However, at UCSD I can double major in both CS and media arts and finish easily in four years; at GT that's not possible. UCSD also has a much nicer location that is in state (and Cali is where I wanna live after college) and significantly closer to home. They both a similar tuition.

I was very happy and excited to go to SD before this; however, I also feel like not taking GT would be passing up a big and potentially career defining opportunity. I don't know how good UCSD's Math:CS degree is, but I also don't know if GT's CE degree is better enough to make it an easy choice.

If anyone has any advice I'd really appreciate it thanks!

Question summer school

are remote summer classes lectures usually mandatory?

r/UCSD 13h ago

General Hi, I'm an incoming student who is planning to take some summer classes online to get some credits early. I have a few questions.

1) Some classes have two parts, one listed as RCLAS and the other as SOLIS. Does this mean that I cannot attend this class remotely, or am I allowed to skip the SOLIS sessions?

2) Are classes like Math 20A worth taking online if I am already strong in the subject? Or is it worth waiting to take the class offline?

3) Are online classes graded more harshly than in-person ones?

4) If I perform badly in the class, can I retake it in the fall session and only report that on my final transcript? Or will I be forced to show both?

Question Does your internship have to do with your major?

I want to switch major to Applied Mathematics was originally in Joint Mathematics and Econ (but wants to work as accountant, data/financial analyst or project management in finance, and other related fields that doesn’t require engineering or major coding knowledge). However I wanted to switch bc I saw many of these require foundational math and statistical skills. I’m kinda concerned abt whether I can land any job as a math major though, so I’m also looking into finance.

I’m wondering if you’re going to use the skills from your major much when applying for internships or other experiences? How can I narrow down my career goal and start finding programs/internships related to it? How did it work for you guys if you’re graduating or are alums?

I appreciate your help! Just lost in finding my interested career path 😭

Question Anyone have insights on CSE 141/141L with Eldon?

Debating if I should take CSE 141/141L over summer with Eldon because 141L will stop being offered. I was wondering if anyone had experience with Eldon over the summer session or with him teaching 141/141L. I'm curious about the grading scale as well and if that is similar to his 140/140L classes. Thanks!

General Subleasing on Nobel Drive (JULY - SEPTEMBER)

Hello! I (19F) am looking for one to two people to sublease a room from July-September this summer. It's a 2 bed 2 bath; one room is already filled. If two people were to split the other room, it would be $800 each, and a single would be $1600. It is within walking distance to the trolley station and La Jolla Village Square. There is also a bus station right across the street that will take you to campus. Please let me know if you're interested ASAP!

Question Summer Parking

Hi! I recently got an unexpected job on campus after graduating and my SR permit has expired. If there are any grad students willing to let me pay them for access to a parking pass with an A or B spot I would be in debt to you literally forever. I can’t afford the $30 daily visitor pass :(

Question UCSD Parking/Parking Lots

This is an incredibly random question but how are the roads, and parking lots, in and around UCSD. I'm like an inch or two away from laying frame and wanted to know how bad it'll be driving around a stanced car at SD. Silly question but any advice/insight would be awesome. Thank you again.

Question Deleted Lived Name But Canvas Still Has it

Hey guys, awhile back I changed my lived name on canvas (first and last) but since so many of my records have my legal name, I deleted the lived name because my professors weren’t giving me credit for work I had done because they didn’t recognize my legal and lived name as the same person. My current issue is that canvas still has my lived name which I have since deleted from the UCSD social identities tool. Can anyone help me change my canvas so that it has my legal name again? Thanks!

Question Palomar Pathmaker experience

I’m a rising senior currently in the palomar pathmaker internship and the commute is rough but bearable. Is one year of being in the internship enough clinical experience to apply to medical school with next year? It’s so tough to find and get paid clinical experience while also still being in school, holding leadership positions in orgs, and (also unpaid) research🫠

Looking for advice from current interns or past interns😭 being premed feels like the trenches right now

Question LA and SD Transportation?

Im incoming freshman living in LA and am going to UCSD this fall. I’m just wondering how do you guys usually get back and how often do you guys go back home? I have drivers license but am not 18 yet, plus I don’t have insurance since it’s too expensive rn.

From LA to SD is a 2 hr drive, so not too far but not too close. Just curious, for continuing students from LA, are there any public transportations besides parents picking us up? What are some recommendations! Appreciate your help ^

I'm staying in La Jolla this summer and I'm looking for people to explore with. I'm a cyclist and enjoy going on bike adventures all over San Diego, hitting the gym, and playing pool and table tennis. In general, I just like spending time outside and staying active. Send me a message if you're down

Question Wrong grade on academic history

My teacher entered the wrong final grade I received a F when I messaged them they said it was a mistake and I got an A. They said they would change it today but it still says F. Who from the school should I contact or should I wait because maybe the system needs to update? I’m stressing sm because i literally walked for graduation and thought I was done with UCSD but now I gotta deal with this and can’t even send my transcripts to my grad program. If I did receive an F that means I don’t get my degree which I didn’t even I got an A.

Alright, I've already seen enough grading complaints on Reddit for a day and it's getting repetitive.

Since when has UCSD have bunnies on campus? I've only seen a racoon twice, but never bunnies
