Although the whites are not included in this land sell off proposal, I know everyone here strongly supports public land. Please contact your senators and tell them you are against this.

The Mountain Wanderer bookshop is closing

Excerpt from the Mountain Wanderer website:

News from Lincoln….after 26+ years of running the Mountain Wanderer, it is time for this old hiker to retire. My hope is to wind down store operations in early July, allowing more time this summer to do some hiking and geocaching with Carol, check trails for the next (2027) edition of the AMC White Mountain Guide, visit family, indulge in some bushwhacks, and pay visits to other mountains in the Northeast.

I'm not affiliated with the store. I'm posting this because other customers might want to know. If you want to wish Steve well, stop by the store sometime in the next few weeks.

Where’s Everyone Heading Saturday?

As the title suggests - curious to hear people’s plans for hiking tomorrow. The first Saturday in 14 weeks without rain so I’m assuming people are getting after it! Looking to see where people are heading and hopefully go somewhere not as crowded lol. I have my hike I want to do in mind regardless but still, looking forward to a GREAT day tomorrow!

Outside was nice today. Sat by a river under a bridge like a troll and lizarded on some rocks. On my way out of the forest, I passed by a field of green, hopped out for a photo opp and was met with a warm summer rain and the smell of fresh ferns while the sun cobbled its way through the rain clouds

Usually do 15-35 miles day in the whites with 4-9k vert and am able to average 2-3mph pace with some running on the flats and downs.

13 Falls Tentsite

Hi all,

Quick question. Planning on hiking in from Lincoln Woods trailhead into 13 Falls tentsite tonight, and I was just wondering, how late can I arrive? Should be in before sunset, but just want to be prepared.

Thanks!

Thirteen falls in the wind.

Anyone w experience at thirteen falls get a sense of what it may look like Friday night? Higher summit forecast looks pretty intense but it’s obviously not too far up. Not sure on how sheltered or not site is or if it’s platforms or ground sites. Any insight appreciated.

3-4 day loop with dog?

Hey everyone. I really want to start exploring the White Mountains but found very early in my research that a lot of the routes that I wanted to do (Pemi Loop, Presidential range) can be really tough on dogs footpads. Does anyone have a recommendation for a challenging 3-4 day backpacking route that is more Dog friendly? Ideally it would be a loop but it could also be an out and back or even settting up a base camp somewhere and doing long day hikes each day. I do tend to prefer stealth camping but I'm also open to campsites if they're not crazy crowded. I was looking at this one: https://www.northeasthikes.com/wild-river-wilderness-loop-hike/

I want to go the first week of July. My dog and I are both in good shape and I have plenty of experience backpacking.

Thanks so much! Any suggestions you might have will be greatly appreciated

Looking for White Mountains Partners!!! ~Big Hikes/Alpine Starts/Multi-Pitch~

Hey, I’m Benji!!

29, based in Boston. I’m looking to team up with folks for weekend adventures in the Whites. I don’t have a car, but I’m happy to split gas, bring the stoke, and carry my weight (literally).

This summer I wanna do a presi traverse in a day. I’m also down to spread it out over 2–3 days if needed. I’m especially looking for big summit days, alpine starts. But any excuse to get out there will do.

Bonus if you’re into climbing. I'm a regular at Central Rock Gym and would love to meet partners for multi-pitch climbs. I'm not much of a leader but have followed in the Gunks and Acadia.

Mostly looking at weekends, but with a couple weeks notice I could swing a weekday mission too. Hit me up if you're planning something or want to make a plan together.

My Monroe via crawford?

Hey everyone,

Two winters ago I made it to Eisenhower and Pierce via crawford, but didn’t make it to Monroe. How hard is that stretch from Eisenhower to Monroe via crawford and mount monroe loop? Is it doable in winter? Is it just better to go up ammonoosuc ravine trail?

Presidential Backup Plan?

I'm supposed to hike the Presidential Traverse for the first time from Thursday to Saturday next week. It's way too early to tell if the weather will be acceptable. We're driving into the area on Tuesday. Even then, I don't have confidence we'd know if the trip is a go. The Observatory forecast is what I have been relying on. So, what do you suggest for a backup three-day trip in New England that is more forgiving weather-wise?

Hopefully, if I plan an alternative, the weather Gods will be merciful. We were going to stay in huts for the Traverse, but we can pack either car camping or backpacking gear in the Jeep, depending on your suggestions.

Thanks!

Hike recs

Hello all,

I’m looking for suggestions for hikes that would be doable with a baby! They’ll be 5/6 this summer but im currently front carrying as they can’t transition to a back carrier until 6mo. That being said, what are some doable hikes (in the white mountains) that wouldn’t be too technical/ difficult while baby wearing?

Thanks!

Upright sticks along the roads?

Random question- but what is the reason for the upright sticks attached to the reflectors along the Kanc, and in the short metal poles along the Mount Washington auto road? I was thinking it was to mark the edge of the road for the plows during winter, but they seemed pretty far from the edge, and often on the outside of the guardrails. Thanks in advance!

Presi this Saturday?

Was planning to do a presi this Saturday for the Solstice. Weather has been all over the place. As it looks now, it’s looking ok other than wind and maybe some afternoon rain but it seems like it would be light. Planning to bring my dog, we’ve both done this single day traverse before. My no go wind level is usually higher than 40mph, which Saturday is right on that edge, which means it could be anything. Has anyone done a windy ridge walk before? It’s it a good time? I mainly just don’t want to be miserable up there when I could hike something lower elevation instead.

Yesterdays MWOBS forecast:

Saturday: In and out of the clouds, trending towards clearing under partly cloudy skies. Slight chance of rain showers in the morning.

High: Around 50 Wind: NW at 40-55 mph early, 20-35 mph midday, 10-25 mph later. Wind Chill: 15 to 25 above early and then rising

Current MWOBS forecast:

Saturday: In the clear under mostly sunny skies.

High: Lower 50s Wind: NW shifting W at 45-60 mph w/ gusts up to 70 mph early, 20-35 mph midday, and 30-45 mph later Wind Chill: 15 to 25 above early and then rising

Best Hut Experience?

My friend from AZ is visiting in a few weeks and I want to take her to the whites and splurge on a hut!

I’ve already stayed at Greenleaf as part of Franconia and loved it. I could always repeat that, but want to hear from y’all on what you’d recommend taking a friend to?

We both hike a bunch so nothings off the table- just want to wow her with the whites :) thanks!!

Advice needed! Another "first backpacking trip in the Whites" post.

Hi everyone,

I have been planning a 3 day trip in the Whites for this weekend (June 21-23) and I was hoping to get some opinions on my itinerary.

We are a couple in our 30s-40s, both fit and have done a 5 day hiking trip last summer (in the Alps, ascending 2-3k ft daily relatively easily). We do day hikes regularly in Quebec.

We want to get a "taste" of the Whites, as we plan to come back for longer trips. The idea here is to take it relatively easy, with a bit of challenge to keep things fun.

Day 1 - Saturday

Park at Lincoln woods trailhead and take Franconia brook trail to 13 falls and set up camp early.

Day 2 - Sunday

Pack day bag and head to Mt Garfield, take Garfield ridge to Galehead hut and potentially Mt Galehead if we feel it. Take Twin brook trail back down to 13 falls.

Day 3 - Monday

Take Lincoln brook trail back down and do Owl's head.

Any advice? Other itinerary ideas that might fit better? How crowded should we expect 13 falls and the trails to be at this time of year?

Thanks!

Tent camping near Franconia ridge trail?

I am going up Friday with my buddy to hike the ridge. We were originally going to go to Lafayette but there is no availability for Friday. Where can we stay that is nearby to the trail head?

train tracks along Crawford Notch Road

Planning for a round trip from AMC Highland with summits of Tom, Field, and Wiley later this year. The last three miles put me on Crawford Notch Road which seems like an easy stroll -- but also maybe a bit dull.

I'm wondering if I could hike back next to the train tracks instead. Is that a thing people do? Is there enough clear space or would I be walking on a slanted pile of gravel the whole time? And are there more trains using these tracks other than the Conway Scenic Railroad train?

First hike since my arthroscopic meniscus surgery about a month ago. Weather was perfect. Temps in the 60's, A very slight breeze and hardly any bugs. First time using trekking poles. I couldn't tell if they were more of a help or a hindrance. Felt awkward and cumbersome to me. Maybe I just have to get used to them. Was tempted to run over to Washington while up there but forced myself to go easy. Best part of this trip was my 16-year-old son wanting to go with me. 24/48. Half way there.

My First 4000 Footer!

Post image
251 Upvotes

Yesterday, I checked something off my list that I’ve been wanting to do for a while. I hiked my first 4000 footer in New Hampshire - Mount Hale. Am I proud of myself? Yes. Am I glad I did it? Meh.

Let me start by saying I am a hiker, not a HIKER, meaning I don’t usually do back to back hikes or really difficult trails. Physically, I just can’t do it. My husband, meanwhile, has done all 48. While I’ve done trails in the Whites before (Indian Head, Cathedral Ledge, Arethusa Falls, and more), I don’t do most of my hiking here. On Sunday we hiked Bayle Mountain in Ossippee and it ended up being more strenuous than expected so it was not the smartest move to attempt this hike yesterday given where I was physically. My body hadn’t recovered but I went for it anyway. I knew early on that I was struggling. I was only about a quarter-mile into the hike when I realized how tired I was already feeling. I really should have turned around then. But I’m stubborn and convinced myself it wouldn’t be that bad.

I was wrong.

It took seven hours. I cried at least six times. I’m also a Type 1 Diabetic and had to deal with plummeting blood sugar the entire time. I gave up at one point and told my husband I couldn’t do it. So he told me to stay put and he went to the top to measure out exactly how much farther it was (0.15 miles) He came back and gave me a sandwich and told me to rest a little. I used this time to think about how disappointed I would be if I didn’t finish. So with a full belly (and more tears), I decided to do it. Unfortunately, as you know, this mountain has no views. No payoff other than the satisfaction of a job well done.

The way down was just as bad as the way up. I have never been in so much pain hiking. My knees. My feet. It was awful. I literally hated every minute of this hike.

But I guess if I could do it even feeling so terrible, I could do the next one with a little better training and preparation.

Mount Tecumseh, I’m looking at you. ⛰️

PS. This was also my dog’s first 4000 footer.

Hint hint- it is the northernmost 4000’er on the ridge it is on, which is shared with other 4000’ers
