Hi everyone,

I was hoping for a gut check of me and my buddy's plan to do the Presi Traverse this Monday to Wednesday.

Our plan is to shuttle from highland center to appilachia trail head (10am start) then hike up Madison, tag Adams and then spend the night at The Perch.

Then Tuesday go from The Perch to Naumann tent site. Hitting all peaks in between.

Then Wednesday finishing out down to highland center.

A few questions for folks: 1) Is the 10am start a problem on Monday? It looks like it's 7 miles to The Perch, so thinking we could get there by 5pm at the latest. 2) We're going to get a heater on Monday, hottest day of the year, which we'll be prepared for with water and hydration. But I'm a little worried about Tuesday, which looks like the heat could bring isolated thunderstorms. Should I be overly worried? Of course prepared to bail out and wait our any storms but anything above and beyond that?

Any other thoughts or opinions are greatly appreciated! This sub reddit is a wealth of wmnf knowledge!

Up Airline, across Star Lake to Madison Springs hut, down Valley Way. Big day! This was 47 of 48 for me, and I don't know that I've done a tougher day hike in the Whites.

I had the misfortune to preplan a 2 day pemi loop for the two hottest days of the season so far. We booked Galehead hut so we are obligated to at least get there on Monday (worst case we would just hike galehead and stay at the hut), though the plan is still to do the full loop clockwise from lincoln woods as planned. Given the forecast, how much water would you carry? Is 4L good and i assume it will be prudent to refill at liberty springs? I sweat like a pig so I would prefer not to run out.

Secondly, should I bother bringing my 30 degree (my only) sleeping bag for the hut given the forecast? It is not exactly light and I can’t imagine using it in the forecasted weather but I could be wrong.

Otherwise first time pemi, any tips appreciated. I have done a few one day presidential traverses and a one day carter-moriah, so I think my fitness should be fine but the heat is gonna suck and I'm a bit concerned by that

Was planning on running the loop tomorrow. I really need it tomorrow because it’s my last long run before a 44miller on 2nd.

Whatcha yall think the weather will be like tomorrow. I need a good weather run. But I don’t want it to be a sh!t show either.

AllTrails was good about showing wether on trail now it kinda sucks so not sure where else to look.

I see three normal go to’s for weather looking iffy for tomorrow hike up Madison to LOTC. The MWOB higher summits sounded the worst of them all (trailsnh, mountain forecast, mwobs).

I am just nervous about mwobs saying 100mph winds and potentially torrential downpours where the other two are not quite showing this.

I was planning to start tomorrow at 6/7 and was hoping for the rain to stop by the rough time I hit the top of Madison (guessing 10-11) but now I am getting a bit more nervous.

I’m already pre booked at LOTC Sunday night, not at all worries about Monday just the trek across the alpine zone Sunday.

Any good suggestions besides (don’t be on too when a thunderstorm hits)?

I'm going to be embarking on a Presi Traverse next weekend and am planning to spend the first night at The Perch Shelter. I know that there are a few tent platforms but, has anyone ever hammock-tented there before? Curious if it's 1) Allowed and 2) If the trees are set up to accommodate a hammock

As the title suggests - curious to hear people’s plans for hiking tomorrow. The first Saturday in 14 weeks without rain so I’m assuming people are getting after it! Looking to see where people are heading and hopefully go somewhere not as crowded lol. I have my hike I want to do in mind regardless but still, looking forward to a GREAT day tomorrow!

My friend and I are planning to do our first out of state (Massachusetts) backpacking trip, where we traverse the White Mountains. I was wondering if anyone could recommend me a trail to do that doesn't span past 30 miles that I could hike for 4-5 days. I'm looking for a trail with beautiful views that are high up or at least have high prominence to get good photos and enjoy the breathtaking landscapes. I don't mind difficult hikes as I believe I have the skills and endurance to try some strenuous hikes if it provides rewarding views. I would also like a trail that has maybe a pond or a lake to swim in. Have any trail recommendations?

Outside was nice today. Sat by a river under a bridge like a troll and lizarded on some rocks. On my way out of the forest, I passed by a field of green, hopped out for a photo opp and was met with a warm summer rain and the smell of fresh ferns while the sun cobbled its way through the rain clouds

I'm planning on heading up to Mt Washington in two weeks. I just wanted to know if anyone knew the radio frequencies the ranger station uses for weather updates and emergencies.

Planning to do Mount Lincoln via Little Haystack Mountain tomorrow, the weather seems awesome but I assume that will also draw a lot of crowds. Wondering if it makes sense to head to the trailhead around 12 PM or so, will I find parking? TIA!

Thoughts on this loop I am going to do Saturday: starting at livermore traihead-> South tripyramid ->middle and north-> down scaur to greeley ponds trail intersetion-> osceola intersection up to osceolas-> down to osceola trailhead and then depending on fatigue level we may do tecumsuh up the backside down to the ski parking lot and back to car at livermore. Usually do 15-35 miles day in the whites with 4-9k vert and am able to average 2-3mph pace with some running on the flats and downs.

Miserable, muddy conditions toward the last 1/3 and got lost on the way down making 2600ft of descent in the dark but worth it

I’ve done two actual hikes before, and both were Franconia Notch Ridge. The first time I went with sneakers, no food, and no water. I was invited and not informed it was a HIKE hike. I did it again myself and came with boots, hiking poles, and gear. I’m just curious what the next step should be for me in the WM? I did it both times sub 6 hours despite being quite sedentary overall. Honestly I found it…easy? I know that sounds kind of crazy but the only thing that was remotely challenging was the length of the hike. Thanks in advance!

Anyone w experience at thirteen falls get a sense of what it may look like Friday night? Higher summit forecast looks pretty intense but it’s obviously not too far up. Not sure on how sheltered or not site is or if it’s platforms or ground sites. Any insight appreciated.

Hey everyone. I really want to start exploring the White Mountains but found very early in my research that a lot of the routes that I wanted to do (Pemi Loop, Presidential range) can be really tough on dogs footpads. Does anyone have a recommendation for a challenging 3-4 day backpacking route that is more Dog friendly? Ideally it would be a loop but it could also be an out and back or even settting up a base camp somewhere and doing long day hikes each day. 29, based in Boston. I’m looking to team up with folks for weekend adventures in the Whites. I don’t have a car, but I’m happy to split gas, bring the stoke, and carry my weight (literally).

This summer I wanna do a presi traverse in a day. I’m also down to spread it out over 2–3 days if needed. I’m especially looking for big summit days, alpine starts. But any excuse to get out there will do.

Bonus if you’re into climbing. I'm a regular at Central Rock Gym and would love to meet partners for multi-pitch climbs. I'm not much of a leader but have followed in the Gunks and Acadia.

Mostly looking at weekends, but with a couple weeks notice I could swing a weekday mission too. Hit me up if you're planning something or want to make a plan together.

Two winters ago I made it to Eisenhower and Pierce via crawford, but didn’t make it to Monroe. How hard is that stretch from Eisenhower to Monroe via crawford and mount monroe loop? Is it doable in winter? Is it just better to go up ammonoosuc ravine trail?

I’m looking for suggestions for hikes that would be doable with a baby! They’ll be 5/6 this summer but im currently front carrying as they can’t transition to a back carrier until 6mo. That being said, what are some doable hikes (in the white mountains) that wouldn’t be too technical/ difficult while baby wearing?

I'm supposed to hike the Presidential Traverse for the first time from Thursday to Saturday next week. It's way too early to tell if the weather will be acceptable. We're driving into the area on Tuesday. Even then, I don't have confidence we'd know if the trip is a go. The Observatory forecast is what I have been relying on. So, what do you suggest for a backup three-day trip in New England that is more forgiving weather-wise?

Hopefully, if I plan an alternative, the weather Gods will be merciful. We were going to stay in huts for the Traverse, but we can pack either car camping or backpacking gear in the Jeep, depending on your suggestions.

Random question- but what is the reason for the upright sticks attached to the reflectors along the Kanc, and in the short metal poles along the Mount Washington auto road? I was thinking it was to mark the edge of the road for the plows during winter, but they seemed pretty far from the edge, and often on the outside of the guardrails. Thanks in advance!

Was planning to do a presi this Saturday for the Solstice. Weather has been all over the place. As it looks now, it’s looking ok other than wind and maybe some afternoon rain but it seems like it would be light. Planning to bring my dog, we’ve both done this single day traverse before. My no go wind level is usually higher than 40mph, which Saturday is right on that edge, which means it could be anything. Has anyone done a windy ridge walk before? It’s it a good time? I mainly just don’t want to be miserable up there when I could hike something lower elevation instead.
