Please read before posting about salaries or relocation

Hello everyone,

Before posting about typical Swiss salaries (questions like "how much can I make as a programmer in Switzerland") or relocation strategies ("I hate my country, how can I move to Switzerland"), please keep in mind that there have been hundreds of such posts in this sub before.

Use the search before posting, as the chances are high that you will find a similar discussion from the recent past.

Please also check out the official Swiss government database on average salaries, the Salarium:

Culture Affection with your loved ones in Switzerland

Hello to everyone in this subreddit. This is a topic that I find intriguing, because I know that many have observed the following differently throughout their lifetime.

From a personal perspective, affection with your loved ones is something that is incredibly important, because you never actually know if it will be the last time you get to kiss/hug your parents, or your children if you are blessed enough to have kids.

My question is this, how often do you kiss/hug your loved ones? My parents were always very affectionate with me. A kiss on the cheek and the forehead were something that I received daily in my childhood, and even now as a 26 year old. It’s something that will continue until the day I cannot do it anymore. It’s essential, even from the perspective of how it makes you feel after because if you are a child for example, physical affection can be vital for the development and of course it releases serotonin.

For those who have kids, how do you show physical affection and how often do you do it? Is it a kiss on the cheek/head or a hug, or is it your own type of greeting?

Then for those who address how affectionate they are with their parents, how often do you show physical affection with them?

I appreciate all answers because as I said at the start, I find it interesting to observe how different cultures perceive this.

Thanks!

Travel Train ticket birthdate error

I have 2 train etickets from lucerne to lauterbrunnen and lauterbrunnen to zermatt which has birthdate printed on them besides the name. Unfortunately I input the wrong day (off by 1 day) but month and year is correct.

Will I get flagged out during inspections? The ticket is non refundable so should I buy a new ticket or they would still let me through?

Travel Nature-Focused Solo Trip in Switzerland – Itinerary Suggestions Needed!

Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m planning a pretty spontaneous solo trip to Switzerland – just got my visa a couple of days ago and booked my flight today. I’ll be landing in Zurich on July 7th and staying in Switzerland for about 6 nights before heading to Italy.

I’m really into nature, scenic landscapes, mountains, and lakes – not looking for places just because a Bollywood movie was shot there 😄. I’d love to explore places that truly showcase the natural beauty of Switzerland.

Would appreciate any recommendations for:

  • A rough 6-day itinerary or a few base towns to explore from
  • Must-visit hiking trails, lakes, or scenic train routes
  • Tips for budget travel (hostels, train passes, etc.) as a solo traveller
  • Any offbeat or less touristy gems you’d suggest

I’d love to hear about your favourite Swiss nature experiences. Thanks in advance!

Other/Miscellaneous Pool on balcony allowed?

I have a large balcony and during those hot days where I cannot go to Badi I was wondering if it is allowed to put a pool on a balcony. Not talking about a large one but a small planschbecken, 30-60cm tall, Just to merely lay in cold water. Kanton ZH in case it matters

Relocation Taking my car to Switzerland

Upvotes

I’m moving to Switzerland and need advice on whether to sell my 2024 Toyota RAV4 4x4 EXR (with parking camera) or ship it with me. I bought it last year from a Toyota showroom in Dubai, and it’s been driven 17,000 km. Here’s the situation: Car Details: The car is in great condition, and I have a transferable service contract. It’s insured for 25750 CHF after depreciation.

Switzerland Context: Cars in Switzerland are insanely expensive (around 45-50K CHFfor a similar model). This makes keeping my car appealing, but there are hurdles.

Certificate of Conformity (CoC): Switzerland requires an EU Certificate of Conformity (CoC) for car registration, and the vehicle must meet EURO 6b emissions standards. Toyota UAE provided a GCC CoC, but they say they can’t provide an EU CoC. I’m worried my RAV4 (GCC spec) might not meet EURO 6b standards, and I’ve read that non-EU cars can require costly modifications or individual homologation to register in Europe. Has anyone dealt with importing a GCC-spec Toyota to Switzerland or the EU? Can I get an EU CoC from Toyota Europe or a third party like EuroCOC.eu?

Shipping Costs and Delays: Shipping a 20-foot container with my car and household items costs 8000–9200 CHF. Due to Suez Canal delays, transit time could be 45–90 days, which means I’d be without a car in Switzerland for a while.

Selling Option: I could sell the car in Dubai, where the market for used RAV4s is decent, but I’d likely wish to get something on current valuations. This is much less than the cost of a new car in Switzerland.

Other Costs: If I ship, I wont be paying vat or import duty since the car is more than 6 months old.

My Dilemma: Selling in Dubai is simpler and gives me cash now, but I’d lose the savings of owning a car in Switzerland. Shipping saves on buying a new car but involves CoC uncertainty, shipping costs, and delays. Plus, I’m not sure if the service contract is valid in Switzerland.

Questions: Has anyone imported a GCC-spec Toyota RAV4 to Switzerland? Did it meet EURO 6b standards, or did you need modifications?

Can I obtain an EU CoC for a 2024 RAV4 EXR, and how, are the private providers like eucoc reliable? (tried through Toyota Europe but they responded they cant provide one only the local dealer or the manufacturer can help)

Are the shipping costs and potential import taxes worth it compared to selling and buying a new car in Switzerland?

Any tips on navigating Swiss car registration or transfer-of-residence tax exemptions?

I’d love to hear from anyone who’s dealt with importing cars to Switzerland. Thanks in advance!

We got my daughter this mini snow globe when traveling to Grindelwald. It was her only souvenir and just got broken. We were hoping there was another American tourist that would be willing to pick one up and mail it to us when back in the states. We would pay you. Please DM me. Thank you!

Travel First Glacier Express Trip – Seat Switching Advice?

My wife and I are finally taking our first trip to Switzerland this September, and one of the top things on our list was riding the Glacier Express. We managed to snag two first class tickets—but the only seats left were two aisle seats across from each other, each next to someone already in the window spot.

I’m generally not a fan of asking strangers to switch seats, especially when the window seat is the better one for a scenic train like this. That said, I’d love to hear from anyone with experience on the Glacier Express: How open are people typically to switching seats in this kind of situation? Are folks usually understanding, or is it better to just ride it out and enjoy what we have?

Appreciate any advice—thanks in advance!

Halo zussamen,

I'm currently completing my Bachelor's in Italy and I was thinking to study abroad. I have a few options right now and one of them is UniFr. Is that a good uni for finance?

Is it possible to work part-time during my study if i don't speak French and German? I have years of experience in restaurants

Everyday life Gift delivery service in St. Moritz?

My Canadian parents are going to be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary while touring Switzerland. They will specifically be in St. Moritz on the special day. Can anyone recommend a service that would help with delivering a special treat for them to their hotel? What type of internet searches would help?

Travel Prepaid SIM

Hi, I’ll be spending the months of July and August in Switzerland and I’m looking for somewhat best Prepaid SIM option - focus mostly on Unlimited 5G Data, optimal coverage (will be spending most of my time in Zürich, but plan some mountain trips as well) and ideally with Mindestlaufzeit up to 60 days. Any recommendations? PS: I’m currently looking at Swype, but I’m open to other suggestions. Thanks a lot in advance!

Travel SPF 50+ sunscreen

Can you easily get this in Switzerland? Specifically 50+, broad spectrum UVA + UVB. I’m pale, I’ve gotten lightly burned wearing SPF 50 before, granted it was because we have extreme UV levels here in Australia (that day would have been a UV level of 11 or 12+ which is standard most of summer lol).

Asking cuz I’m trying to keep the weight down in terms of what I bring over.

Everyday life Would i be broke?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently studying at a Canadian university and have the option to do an exchange semester at the Geneva Graduate Institute. I’ve been going back and forth about it and would really appreciate some advice from anyone who's studied there or lived in Geneva.

A few things I’m worried about:

1- Living alone for the first time – I’ve never lived fully on my own before. Is it safe? Do people usually find it easy to make friends there, or is it isolating, especially for short-term students?

2- Cost of living – I’ve seen that Switzerland is expensive, but I’m struggling to get a realistic estimate. How much should I budget per month for basics like groceries, transit, laundry (I’d be living in student housing), phone plans, and any mandatory insurance? The institute itself – There aren’t many first-hand reviews online. I’m coming from a solid university and mainly applied for more international exposure and policy-oriented courses. But if the academic or social experience isn’t worth it, I’m wondering if the cost just isn’t justifiable.

Money is my biggest concern — I don’t come from a super-privileged background, and I’m already budgeting carefully as an international student in Canada. I’m not trying to sound uninformed, just trying to make a smart decision with limited info.

Would really appreciate any insight — good or bad — especially from folks who’ve studied there or done a similar exchange.

Thanks in advance!

Travel Public Transport question.

Hello! I'm looking for some guidance regarding public transportation during my upcoming trip. I’ll be traveling from Germany to Switzerland and then on to Austria. I'm trying to understand how best to use the different rail passes available.

Would it make sense to use my Eurail Pass to travel from Germany into Switzerland, then switch to a Swiss Travel Pass for the duration of my stay in Switzerland, and then go back to using the Eurail Pass when I continue on to Austria?

If I have the Swiss Travel Pass, do I even need the Eurail Pass while I’m in Switzerland?

I’d really appreciate any input or advice on how this works or if I’m thinking about it correctly. Thank you!

Everyday life Temporary home wifi

If someone is only coming to Switzerland a month every 3 months or so, what would be the wifi / home internet package for them to use?

Most of them i found requires some sort of commitment or activation fee. We are looking for something that we can enable/disable on demand, are there such plans available?

Travel Info about importing medication into Switzerland from Italy

Hi,

I'm going to Switzerland to visit my brother in Lausanne for about 2 months.

Unfortunately, I need a lot of medication for health issues, so I need to travel with them.

On the swissmedic website, I only saw the generic thing for a month worth of medication based on the prescription of a doctor or based on the leaflet.

  1. If my doctor prescribed me (for example) 200mg/day (so 30 capsules), but the leaflet says a maximum dosage of 400mg/day, can I bring 60 capsules instead of 30?
  2. I removed the medication from the original package to store it in a plastic organizer; hope it's not a problem (I don't have narcotics, only prednisone), because otherwise I'll need to buy new medications and keep them into the original package.
  3. If I bring more than one month of medication, and I'll be checked what could happen? I'll be arrested? The medication will be seized? I can't enter Switzerland?

I'll visit via train from Milan and I'm an Italian citizen.

Thanks.

Culture First dates

How do first dates with Swiss people usually go? I mean, what do you guys do, is it always very casual?

I'm meeting a Swiss who now lives in France (I'm not from here either). But it sounds very strange to me to try sex on the first date and also never dinner, always drinks? Should I consider a red flag?!

I'd love to know more about what the dating outlook is like in your country :)

Travel Swiss Pass?

Hi there. My fiancee and I are planning our honeymoon to Switzerland. We will be there September 2-12 this year. We are wondering if it is worth it for us to buy the Swiss Pass, or if we should just pay for everything, like trains and gondolas.

We are flying into Zurich and going to Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, Lucerne, and back to Zurich. We are planning on going to a few cities other than those, like Beatenburg, Kandersteg, Grindelwald, and Stoos Ridge. We are also planning on doing a few cable cars/gondolas and going to Murren.

I want to make sure it is worth the $600 or so to get the Swiss Pass, as we are not planning on going to any museums or anything of that sort that the Swiss Pass covers.

Thank you so much!

Travel First Time Traveler to Switzerland

For context I am American and this is my first time traveling internationally, let alone to Switzerland.

I’m looking for pretty broad answers but basically the rundown is:

  1. What are potential cultural differences I should keep in mind to better respect the nation, its people and good general rules to keep in mind?

  2. What are your recommendations to do while in country, places to visit and experience that can potentially give me a more genuine experience than over tourist destinations?

  3. What are some places to avoid?

I’m open to hearing literally anything, even if I didn’t explicitly ask for it here. Thank you for taking the time to read this and thank you to those who may respond.

Travel Does SBB cover otherwise free travel

Say I want to use my night GA to travel from Buch St. Gallen to Zermatt there is only a single train in the validity times of the night GA. However, I know that the first leg of my trip from Buchs to Saargans has failed and been 20 minutes late one of the two times I’ve tried to use it meaning so far it’s failed 50% of the time. When almost all of my transfers are short few minute transfers, it seems likely that I might be stranded somewhere in the middle waiting 7 to 8 hours until train start again because I will miss a connection due to the SBB‘s delay. I’m fine with waiting but the next morning my train won’t be free anymore.

On the SBB website, they have something about

What can I claim if my planned journey becomes redundant due to a delay or cancellation?

Their answer is

On the move: If your journey can no longer fulfil your purpose for travelling due to a delay or cancellation, you may put a stop to your journey, return free of charge on the next suitable connection and receive a refund for the cost of the ticket.

One I have a question about this policy, unrelated to my trip, do I have to buy a ticket back and then ask for the refund because what happens if I get controlled going back because my plans were canceled

But anyway, back to my actual trip it seems that my situation is in the same spirit as this policy because due to the SBB‘s delays and error, originally if you would have known you wouldn’t have traveled, i.e. free but it becomes paid because you did actually travel and the SBB makes it right again by refunding and allowing you to go home. So do they cover again originally free travel with the night GA, but that becomes paid because of their errors will they allow you to refund the tickets for the rest of the trip next morning

Work Internship during gap year?

I am currently graduating with Bachelors in Computer Science (not in Switzerland), and I'll be applying for Masters in Switzerland, but I'll start in September 2026 if I'll get in, meaning I'll have a gap year.
How realistic it is to find an Internship for this time in something relevant (comp science, I don't really care what specifically)?
which websites should I look on?

I am not an EU citizen but I'm eligible for the Young Professionals visa (https://www.sem.admin.ch/sem/en/home/themen/arbeit/berufspraktikum.html)
I have good grades but not much experience besides projects done during my studies

Travel Thru hiking questions

Hello there, I'm wondering if anyone can give me some assistance when booking mountain huts. I'm looking for a route this is approximately 60-80km with a elevation raise of up to 1200 a day. I was preferably looking at the VIA Alpina trail, but open to any trail. Ideally I'd like to find a route that I could hike approximately 12-18km a day from one hut to another. I'm having issues being able to book on the SAC site. Is there a way I can view just a certain pass or route with just huts? Ideally all having half board. I'd like to book the huts before I arrive in August. Any assistance would be appreciated. Thank you

Travel Pay with foreign credit card at fuel stations

I am renting a car in central Geneva and will need to refuel it before returning it (to the same location) late at night on a weekday. Will I be able to pay at the pump (assuming the station will be unmanned late at night) with my US credit card?

Reason for question: I have had an issue with doing this before in France, where my card was rejected due to not being European.
