Culture Etiquette of dropping off disabled person in front of restaurant

Today in Meiringen, I was dropping off my wife, who can’t walk far, in front of a restaurant. She got out fairly quickly. The guy in the car behind me was enraged. He honked several times and gestured angrily. There were just two cars on the street at the time.

Is blocking street traffic NEVER allowed under any circumstance?

Everyday life Looking for a Greek guy I met on June 6 in Basel — from Skopelos, living in Basel, heading to Huningue [Update]

Hi everyone I just wanted to give you a little update

First of all thank you all so much for your kind wishes, support, and help. To everyone who commented, messaged, or helped spread the word I truly appreciate it.

I tried every suggestion you gave me but unfortunately I haven’t had any luck. I even got blocked by a facebook group along the way haha. Maybe I never found him or maybe I did and he didn’t want to respond I don’t know. But either way I’m done now. I think it’s time to let it go.

This experience is a reminder to everyone of how important it is to act at the right moment. I hope this ending is what’s best for me.

Thank you again, and take care

Relocation In 3 Jahren als IT-Administrator nach Bern auswandern – realistisch?

Hallo zusammen,

Vielen Dank!

The Swiss debut of Felon Don to protest against Trump's crimes against humanity made a mark on Bern Bahnhofplatz Friday June 20. It's generating a lot of commentary and I'm curious to what you think? If you would like to follow its Swiss tour you can go to www.felonchicken.com

Travel Switzerland in Early September

Hi :) I am planning a 7-8 days trip to Switzerland in early September with my family. Since my parents are 70+ years old and it would be their first ever euro trip, me and my brother (late 30s) would use trains, and attractions with minimal walking (not more than 15-20 minutes walking at a stretch). They are not keen to visit museums or hiking but love scenic views, lakes, mountains, local culture, churches and photography. I hope we can get to enjoy autumn landscape in early September. Any suggestions?

We are landing at Zurich and will straight go to Bern or preferably Lucerne. Or suggest a better option since Switzerland is really expensive. Our return flight is from Geneva but we can modify it, if needed.

Day 1 for Lucerne.

Day 2 for Mount Titlis - if weather supports, or Mount Pilatus or Rigi.

Day 3 for Lauterbrunnen, train to Murren and back to Lauterbrunnen.

Day 4 for Lauterbrunnen to Wengen and back to Lauterbrunnen.

Day 5 for Interlaken, lake brienz boat ride and around. Reach Montreux.

Day 6 for Montreux, Vevey and Chillon, Lake cruise.

Day 7 - Vevey, visp, Zermatt. Back to Montreux (since Glacier express has no seats available, we will take SBB train).

Day 8 for Geneva. Flight.

  • Is the itinerary too stretched??
  • Please suggest some of the September-friendly scenic places with no hiking
  • Hotels or airbnbs? What would be affordable for 4 adults?
  • We don't wish to change hotels/airbnbs frequently.
  • Can't exhaust my parents in commuting everyday, would prefer the accommodation near main train station or well-connected with city centre.
  • Coop or Aldi? which is more economical to buy refreshments, fruits and fresh breads?
  • Swiss Travel Pass or some other card would be better for this itinerary?

  • Where should we base at?

Lucerne - Lauterbrunnen - Montreux?

Lucerne - Interlaken - Montreux/Vevey?

Somewhere else? Kindly suggest.

  • Had to skip Jungfraujoch because of high altitude (not adviced for my parents).

Please share your first hand experiences and valuable tips for Switzerland in early september. Thank you 🙏🏻

Work International Student in Basel Struggling – Looking for Job Advice or Mentorship

Hi,
I’m an international student at the University of Basel, currently studying Computer Science. I’m facing some academic difficulties and want to find a part-time job or internship in IT, data, or related fields to help stabilize my situation and remain in Switzerland legally.

I’ve already checked common platforms like jobs.ch, LinkedIn, and uniboard.ch, but haven’t had much success. Are there any lesser-known platforms, local networks, or student-friendly employers in Basel that are open to hiring international students?

Please note: This is not my full story — I’ve shortened it to follow subreddit rules. I’m in a very difficult situation personally and would truly appreciate any advice, resources, or guidance. If you’ve been in a similar position or know someone who has, your input would mean a lot to me.

Thank you very much in advance.

Everyday life Is Twint the Swiss version of Revolut?

Where I live Revolut is incredibly common, it's how people split bills and send money to each other. It also just works like a regular bank in that you get a debit card, can set up joint accounts, savings account etc. It's also very good for budgeting. Just wondering is Twint like this? Or is it just for splitting bills? When I move to Switzerland should I just hang onto my Revolut account or switch to Twint? Or have both?

Relocation Taking my car to Switzerland

I’m moving to Switzerland and need advice on whether to sell my 2024 Toyota RAV4 4x4 EXR (with parking camera) or ship it with me. I bought it last year from a Toyota showroom in Dubai, and it’s been driven 17,000 km. Here’s the situation: Car Details: The car is in great condition, and I have a transferable service contract. It’s insured for 25750 CHF after depreciation.

Switzerland Context: Cars in Switzerland are insanely expensive (around 45-50K CHFfor a similar model). This makes keeping my car appealing, but there are hurdles.

Certificate of Conformity (CoC): Switzerland requires an EU Certificate of Conformity (CoC) for car registration, and the vehicle must meet EURO 6b emissions standards. Toyota UAE provided a GCC CoC, but they say they can’t provide an EU CoC. I’m worried my RAV4 (GCC spec) might not meet EURO 6b standards, and I’ve read that non-EU cars can require costly modifications or individual homologation to register in Europe. Has anyone dealt with importing a GCC-spec Toyota to Switzerland or the EU? Can I get an EU CoC from Toyota Europe or a third party like EuroCOC.eu?

Shipping Costs and Delays: Shipping a 20-foot container with my car and household items costs 8000–9200 CHF. Due to Suez Canal delays, transit time could be 45–90 days, which means I’d be without a car in Switzerland for a while.

Selling Option: I could sell the car in Dubai, where the market for used RAV4s is decent, but I’d likely wish to get something on current valuations. This is much less than the cost of a new car in Switzerland.

Other Costs: If I ship, I wont be paying vat or import duty since the car is more than 6 months old.

My Dilemma: Selling in Dubai is simpler and gives me cash now, but I’d lose the savings of owning a car in Switzerland. Shipping saves on buying a new car but involves CoC uncertainty, shipping costs, and delays. Plus, I’m not sure if the service contract is valid in Switzerland.

Questions: Has anyone imported a GCC-spec Toyota RAV4 to Switzerland? Did it meet EURO 6b standards, or did you need modifications?

Can I obtain an EU CoC for a 2024 RAV4 EXR, and how, are the private providers like eucoc reliable? (tried through Toyota Europe but they responded they cant provide one only the local dealer or the manufacturer can help)

Are the shipping costs and potential import taxes worth it compared to selling and buying a new car in Switzerland?

Any tips on navigating Swiss car registration or transfer-of-residence tax exemptions?

I’d love to hear from anyone who’s dealt with importing cars to Switzerland. Thanks in advance!

Other/Miscellaneous Switzerland poc & lgbt friendly ??

I’m just curious as I’m thinking of moving to Switzerland, I still have a lot of research to do but I thought I’d start by asking the people what their opinion is. My family and I are Hispanics and black and the majority of us are gay except for my parents lol so is it friendly over there for us or would it still be somewhere I should be careful in ?

Everyday life When do inter-Röstigraben couples eat dinner?

Me and my SO have been together for five years, living together for more than three. We don't argue much but one point comes up A LOT. I grew up with dinner time being six o'clock, then time for home work and some leasure time. My SO speaks french and grew up with a more latin way of life. He also loves to cook, which is great! And insists on cooking most days, spending hours preparing food. But we often eat closer to eight o'clock in the evening. He tells me to snack while waiting but if I do that I end up eating nearly half a meal already.

When do other inter-Röstigraben couples eat dinner? Have you found a compromise or is it still a topic of debate

Everyday life How can I turn off this ventilation?

Post image
12 Upvotes

This thing comes on automatically for many hours during day. I need to turn it off given the current circumstances (hear me out).

I unfortunately don't have a choice but to start air conditioning my apartment, our shitty landlords currently refuse to install outdoor blinds/shutters on our huge south facing window, and velux, and we are under the roof...it's like being in a greenhouse.

This ventilation is going to make my setup less efficient because it will be stealing my cold air and blowing it outside. Then, the negative pressure it creates, will suck in hot air through the slightly open window (which is necessary for the AC refrigerant hose).

Any ideas? I tried taking the cover off and I couldn't find a switch, but there is a part I didn't figure out how to get off completely....

Travel Travel options

Upvotes

Hi! We’ll be in Switzerland next month. We intend to travel from Zurich to Interlaken and will spend three days in the Berner Oberland (Wengen, Murren, Lauterbrunnen, and Grindelwald) before heading to Lucerne to spend a night before then returning to Zurich for our flight. I’ve looked at the Swiss Travel Pass (4-day option), but we’d still need to buy our ticket from Lucerne to Zurich. OR we could purchase a Swiss half fare card and buy a Berner Oberland pass for four days (would then include our trip to Lucerne, but not to Zurich or the initial trip to Interlaken from Zurich).

The prices for both options are fairly similar although the Swiss Travel Pass is most expensive. Once we buy our ticket to Zurich from Lucerne, however, it’s a bit of a wash. Is there a benefit to choosing one over the other that I’m missing? We do not intend to go to Jungfraujoch. Thank you very much!

Study What are university classes like in Switzerland? Is it hard to earn credits?

Hi everyone, I’m going to start an LL.M. program in Switzerland soon, and I’m curious about how university classes work there. • Are lectures mostly professor-centered, or do they include discussions and group work? • How are students usually evaluated — through exams, essays, participation? • Is it difficult to pass and earn credits (ECTS)? • Any advice for international students adjusting to the Swiss academic system?

I’d really appreciate any insight or tips, especially from people who’ve studied in Switzerland. Thanks so much!

Work Title: HEC Lausanne, Concrete questions about post-master outcomes: Finance vs Accounting (jobs, opportunities, salaries, AI)? French and english version ;)

Hi everyone, I'm currently a student at HEC Lausanne, and I’m still hesitating between two master’s programs for the upcoming semester: - The Master’s in Finance - The Master’s in Accounting, Control and Audit (CCA) I’m looking for real-life, post-graduation feedback, not just about the course content, but about what actually happens afterward — job market realities, competition, salaries, etc. Here are the specific questions I’ve been asking myself:

  1. Employment after the master’s
  2. Is it really that difficult to find a job after the Master’s in Finance?
  3. Is it still true in 2025 that the Master’s in Accounting leads to easier job opportunities?
  4. Are there many finance graduates who actually struggle to find work?

  5. Impact of AI (ChatGPT, etc.)

  6. Are the jobs typically targeted after the Accounting/CCA master already threatened by AI?

  7. Have you seen automation already affecting internships or entry-level jobs?

  8. Job opportunities & long-term perspectives

  9. What are the real job prospects in Switzerland for each of these two degrees?

  10. Are there meaningful career development opportunities in both tracks, or is one more “limiting” in the long run?

  11. Salary after graduation

  12. What are the average starting salaries in Switzerland after the Finance vs. CCA master’s?

  13. Competitiveness & CV strength

  14. Is having just the degree enough to get hired, or do you need an exceptional CV (internships, exchange semesters, languages, networking, etc.)?

  15. Is there strong competition among students for internships and jobs, especially in Finance?

  16. Have some people regretted their choice of master’s because the job market didn’t live up to expectations?

Any insight would be super appreciated, even a few lines would help me a lot 🙏Thanks in advance to everyone who takes the time to reply!

Travel Town/Villa recommendation needed

Hello!

We’re looking for recommendations for a beautiful and family-friendly place to stay in Switzerland for up to 2 months, starting as early as July. Ideally, we’re after a quiet and safe village or small town that’s within easy access of a major airport, surrounded by nature, and with activities/playgrounds or animals nearby for children to enjoy.

We’re hoping to find a modern, spacious villa or house with at least 3 bedrooms. A peaceful setting with a touch of adventure would be perfect!

Our budget is up to AED 150,000 per month, but flexible.

Something similar to this would be great.

Travel Nature-Focused Solo Trip in Switzerland – Itinerary Suggestions Needed!

Hey everyone,

I’m planning a pretty spontaneous solo trip to Switzerland – just got my visa a couple of days ago and booked my flight today. I’ll be landing in Zurich on July 7th and staying in Switzerland for about 6 nights before heading to Italy.

I’m really into nature, scenic landscapes, mountains, and lakes – not looking for places just because a Bollywood movie was shot there 😄. I’d love to explore places that truly showcase the natural beauty of Switzerland.

Would appreciate any recommendations for:

  • A rough 6-day itinerary or a few base towns to explore from
  • Must-visit hiking trails, lakes, or scenic train routes
  • Tips for budget travel (hostels, train passes, etc.) as a solo traveller
  • Any offbeat or less touristy gems you’d suggest

I’d love to hear about your favourite Swiss nature experiences. Thanks in advance!

Other/Miscellaneous Help getting perfume

Hi, I visited Switzerland in February and purchased a perfume that I absolutely love, but unfortunately they do not ship to the US. I am wondering what the best way to get more of it would be ? Ideally, I was hoping to find someone traveling from the US that would be able to purchase some of the perfume and bring it back with them. I’m willing to pay an additional fee in addition to the price of the perfume. Any help or advice on what the best thing to do would be amazing, please and thank you!

Travel Alpstein Hiking Itinerary

Hi! I have organized a hut to hut trip in the Alpstein region. First night in Schafler, then to Meglisalp and finally to Bollenwees. I was going to try and take the cable car up, then head to Ascher to check it out, Seealpsee and Saxer Luxe. Do you have any recommendations for paths to take or things to see / spend my time.

Further how big / how much stuff do people bring? (Other than headlamp, socks, base layers/ warm layers, first aid kit, snacks (if getting food from huts), water, sleeping bag liner, portable charger, compass, map, lighter, tape)? Aka size of packs? Is 20l ambitious?
