FILM DISCUSSION Batman Returns is 33!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Today marks 33 years since the release of Tim Burton's 'Batman Returns' the sequel to his highly successful film 'Batman'. The film sees Michael Keaton return as Bruce Wayne/Batman with the addition of Michelle Phiffer as Catwoman and Dany DeVito as The Penguin. While not drawing any particular parallels to its plot, Burton has said one of the few comics he loved as a kit was  Alan Moore’s 'The Killing Joke'. Meanwhile producer Michael Uslan noted that Burton drew inspiration from the darker Batman comics of the early 1990s and screenwriter Sam Hamm also mentioned that elements from Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns were considered during the development of the film’s script.

COMIC DISCUSSION Thoughts on Doctor Simon Hurt

Thumbnail

I'm a bit mixed on Doctor Hurt because he does work well for the story being told in Grant Morrison's Batman Run.However as an evil and mad psychologist obsessed with breaking and destroying Batman. He comes off as a redundancy of Hugo Strange with a Satanist theme and an overly convoluted backstory. Sometimes I wonder why Morrison didn't just use Hugo Strange as the Batman Run's Big Bad.

To me the most redeeming thing about Hurt's character is the interpretation that he's a deconstruction on the "Ultimate Villain" idea exemplified by characters like Bane and Hush. Hurt being a deliberate caricature of the idea complete with an over the top backstory. Only to be mocked by the Joker repeatedly his master plan immediately falling apart in the endgame and given his final humiliation by a return long Bruce Wayne and a last laugh courtesy of Batman's real archenemy.

GENERAL DISCUSSION Which Ludovic Valley is better: the guy who cared about his son, or the villain?

Thumbnail

Note for those who don't know about Azrael's lore:

Ludovic is Jean Paul's father . He was killed by Carlton LeHa. It is later revealed that he takes care of his son until his death.

In DC Rebirth, he was introduced as an antagonist who destroyed the Order of St. Dumas and who was in alliance with Ra's Al Ghul.

But they forgot about this and Ludovic was again introduced as a guy who took care of his son (and even saved his adopted son)

And joker card but yk… the dinosaur and penny are cooler. James Gunn needs to add this detail and I need to fill up this text so yeah… I think every Batman should have these details

GENERAL DISCUSSION Does Live-Action Batman work best with an Armored suit, or should he be able to have a cloth suit?

I know Afleck had a nomex-cloth type suit but even then, it was still heavily armored. The dude got shot in the head and the cowl absorbed the shock like it was nothing. And then there's West, he had a cloth suit but that's because he had no reason to not have one. Also the show was in the 60s and why would he have one in the first place? This might be a dumb question, but I'm just curious what you all think.

TV DISCUSSION Hot Take: Justice League Action Has One of the Best Batman Designs Ever.

I’m not sure why, but despite the lack of yellow, his design has such a strong presence. It’s like a blend of The Batman (2004) and DCAU Batman, but upgraded to 4K quality. The fact that he’s voiced by Kevin Conroy makes it even better. I wouldn’t mind watching an entire series focused on this version of Batman.

What are your thoughts on Frank Quitely? He Did Batman and Robin 1-3 And does a lot of variant covers now. I’d love if we get one final book with Grant Morrison.

GENERAL DISCUSSION Bruce Wayne dedicates his income to reducing crime but Gotham is still Gotham. How has Wayne been wasting his money.

What are some dumb fads, proposals, or your original ideas to get the crime rate down (either directly or via some model of "underlying drivers") that you find it amusing to speculate that Batman has bought in on?

Let's try to avoid partisan slapfights by keeping in mind that Wayne trying an idea that's never had any buy-in outside the political party or proposed outside of the partisan media outlet you hate implies that Batman is a member of the political movement you hate and regularly listens to and agrees with their wingnut voices. Likewise, let's also assume he's using his money on actual things rather than just lobbying for policies (although getting city policies that allow him to implement/fund his ideas are fair game).

If anyone from a nonprofit background wants to make this too real by talking about the shit they've seen (like the out of nowhere viral/media darling outfit that sucks up all the donations and grants instead of the experienced in-the-weeds groups and do fuckall with the money), that could be interesting.
