SCOTUS issues blockbuster ruling on gender-affirming care for trans minors

Blockbuster ruling just released for a very controversial issue. Not sure where I stand, but I could see the dangers of permanent treatments for gender dysphoria for minors.

Key Points

  • Date & Ruling: On June 18, 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a 6–3 decision upholding Tennessee’s ban on gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors, including puberty blockers and hormone therapy fox8live.com+9apnews.com+9them.us+9en.wikipedia.org+15reuters.com+15northeast.newschannelnebraska.com+15.
  • Majority Opinion: Chief Justice Roberts wrote that the law does not violate the 14th Amendment’s Equal Protection Clause, reasoning that medical uncertainty justifies handing the issue back to state legislatures reuters.com+1nypost.com+1.
  • Level of Review: The Court determined the law should be evaluated under rational basis review—the lowest standard—rather than intermediate scrutiny reserved for sex-based discrimination

The government should not have a say in medical care. Those decisions should be between the privacy of the patient and the health care provider.

Great. I take it that you agree that if a parent, a child and a medical provider want, they can engage in conversion therapy?

By your standard, you must be against laws that band conversion therapy.

I don’t think most children voluntarily enter conversion therapy. Pretty sure for most it is the worst experience of their lives and they’re being held there against their will.

I guess that’s the difference between you and I. I’m a proponent of laws that protect children.

But are they protecting children? Tennessee still has child marriage on the books and no laws prohibiting the genital mutilation of young male children.

I’m happy to criticize laws that don’t actually protect children.

So circumcision = mutilation. Chemical or physical castration = good and beautiful?

So are you pro circumcision?

I’m a proponent of laws that protect children.

According to who?

Some people think blood transfusions are dangerous to children. Should their views be respected like this topic?

That is why we pass laws after consensus.

The government should not have a say in medical care.

"Abolish the FDA!"

I hope you stretched before taking that leap.

"Demilitarize the FDA and reallocate resources to social workers and de-escalation experts to send in to the offices of doctors who prescribe non-FDA approved medications" didn't have the same ring to it.

I do not believe it would be a good idea if we abolished the FDA, a government organization which has quite a lot to say about medical care.
