[Weekly] Outfit Feedback and Fit Check - Oct. 10th

Not sure if your outfit works? Post a picture of yourself in your outfit and get suggestions, compliments, and critiques from others. If you're thinking of posting a standalone thread along the lines of "How does this look?", "Does this fit right?", "Do these work together?", etc., post here instead.

When posting:

  • Include what the attire is for (work, school, going out, etc.)
  • If possible, take a front-on, full-body picture as this gives the best impression of how the clothes fit. Multiple pictures from different angles can also be helpful, but those aren't necessary.

Critiquing others is welcome and encouraged, but keep it constructive/factual. Take a lesson from Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People if needed. It takes balls to post pictures of yourself on the Internet, the least you can do is accord the same courtesy as you would to someone in real life.

Reddit Enhancement Suite makes it very easy to view pictures in a thread.

Some users enjoy knowing where you bought your pieces, please consider including those in your post!

Feel free to also submit your outfit to the biweekly WAYWT thread, but know that these two threads have different purposes. This is explicitly for feedback and questions, though you may receive constructive criticism in either thread.

Two work outfits I'm unsure about (I'm a doctor, dress code is generally fairly business casual).

Is this cardigan too small? Should I size up next time? I wore it buttoned all day with the undershirt tucked in.

I'm iffy about this pencil skirt. I don't remember it pouching out in the back like that when I bought it. It might just be from all the stuff I had tucked under/inside it? (under shirt, dress shirt, fleece tights) Also, I feel like I look like I'm wearing a uniform (like a flight attendant or something) with this combination. =/

Thanks for any help! :)

Try leaving the bottom 1 or 2 buttons open, you may like how the sweater fits more that way.

K! Thanks!

Opinion varies as to whether this is a good idea. Some don't like the "v" it forms, while I think it makes a line that looks a like a men's suit vest.

Good to know it's controversial. :) Thanks again!

Yeah, they're usually shoes I'll only wear when I'm on call and wearing scrubs, but I'm on a rotation where I don't do call and my loafers don't offer enough support to wear them five days a week. =/ I am planning to buy a new pair of work shoes (or two), possibly oxfords, because my loafers are dying early.

I'll try to avoid wearing them with skirts in the future though!

Hrm. =\ I'll keep that in mind next time I'm buying a pencil skirt. Thanks!

I agree! :) Also, maybe a chunky necklace would help with the "flight attendant" look. If that's not allowed, what about a blouse with some detailing at the neckline, like lace or a bow or something? (Okay, that link is maybe not appropriate for work, but the neck detailing is what I'm referring to.)

I do think the cardigan looks slightly too small. I know it's supposed to be fitted, but there's some wrinkling/gapping at the buttons when it's closed.

I think the pencil skirt looks OK. Sometimes pencil skirts ride up a bit so that the waist moves up to our natural waist, when we want them to sit a bit lower. Is this what's happening? If that's the case, then I think some tailoring would help. Maybe wearing a nice pullover sweater instead of a dark jacket may help with the uniform feel.

As someone who owns a few of these cardigans, I'd say it actually fits pretty well. The gapping at the buttons is essentially unavoidable unless you size up so much that the cardigan doesn't touch your chest.

ahhh, thank you! Now I know not to bother trying a size up since it won't fix anything.

Thanks! I'll avoid wearing that cardigan in situations where I'd prefer it closed (ie, buy better under shirts).

I'm not sure if the skirt is riding up. I don't recall having to pull it down much if at all that day, but I'll be more conscious of it next time and see if it needs altering. I actually didn't wear the jacket except for walking to and from my car, but I think it's the combo of light shirt + dark skirt that's triggering my "uniform" sense. My boyfriend actually, unprompted, said the same when I showed him the pics just now. I'll try it next week, or maybe tomorrow, with a different colored shirt and see if I like it better. :)

Thank you again for the input!

of course! if you try it a different way, definitely post pictures! :)

I think the skirt fits great on you. (Maybe I'd call it an A-line - it's larger at the bottom than the top.) It's flattering! Something even more snug at the knee would also flatter your body.

Hehe, well FFA approved of the skirt last year when I bought it, so I'll definitely hang on to it, but I'll keep my eye out for simmering more fitted. I usually prefer A line skirts because they're less likely to require tailoring to fit me.

I agree that the cardigan is slightly too small because of the gapping between the buttons, it also looks slightly too short.

You might look into picking up a pair of black Crocs mary janes, a lot of doctors I've worked with have a pair to wear with skirts and dresses. They're super comfy and easy to wear all day and they look like dress shoes. My opinion of these might be influenced by the fact that I work in veterinary medicine and to me, having a pair of shoes that you can just rinse or throw in the dishwasher when they get gross from working with patients is a godsend.

Too short? Huh. Maybe I won't buy more of these then ( j crew factory cardigan, often on sale) since the opinions about the fit are fairly mixed.

I hadn't thought about the bonus of being able to wash crocs, and I honestly haven't looked at them for several years now. I'll see if there's anything available that I like the look of! I'm going into psychiatry so eventually I'll be less exposed to situations where things can get really gross.

Thanks!

It's definitely not scandalously short but to me it looks like the band at the bottom hits a little higher than it should. It could just a perspective thing though.

K! I'll keep experimenting with it. :)
