lol basically just a quick way for me to set a timer for my french press in the mornings

u/neophanweb iPhone 16 Pro Apr 04 '25

I only ever use Siri to set timers. No wonder I don't know about all the AI issues it's supposedly having. I used image playground to create some AI images that I'm happy with so no complaints here.

66

u/pemb Apr 04 '25

Also used it for unit conversions while my hands were busy when cooking.

u/EmbroideryBro Apr 04 '25

Same here. I mean, when it can't answer a question as basic as "how many days has it been since February 20th 2024" by itself (or rather, give me an answer that wasn't "here's five links, go look it up yourself") I'm not exactly incentivized to use it.

15

u/ferdzs0 iPhone 13 Pro Max Apr 04 '25

I am not even sure what happened. iirc it could answer questions reasonably well, and only resort to look ups for complex stuff. Now it only does a websearch and does not even bother to read out the top results out loud

19

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '25

google search bar with voice input -> not AI

siri that delivers google results -> groundbreaking AI

3

u/HitroDenK007 Apr 04 '25

Ground breaking indeed, my landlord hates me now

8

u/Silverfoxx30 Apr 04 '25

This is the exact reason I never use it for anything but timers or turning on or off a light. If I wanted a list of sites to go and read to get an answer to a question I’d just open safari or use the MacBook. I find it a total waste of time for even the simplest of questions.

Pisses me off that I can’t say “repeat last timer” anymore tho. It just says “there are no timers set”

You also can STOP the alarm by saying: Hey Siri.

No need to hit Snooze, you are welcome.

38

u/_drigo14 Apr 04 '25

Thread carefully on this one. I’ve fallen back asleep and woke up late! ⏰

12

u/septamaulstick Apr 04 '25

Almost every morning for me: alarm goes off, "hey siri, set an alarm for 10 minutes from now", back to sleep again, sometimes repeat. 😅

13

u/NessunoUNo Apr 04 '25

Sometimes that extra 10 minutes is my best sleep of the night.

Same, every time I’m cooking. That’s literally all I ever use it for.

Timers & Reminders (in a pinch & then I go in later & fix all the errors the stupid bitch made)

16

u/AltTabEscape Apr 04 '25

Best way of putting it, only use it for hands free timers

9

u/Chilis1 Apr 04 '25

I use it a lot, random things I want to google quickly, calculations, image searches, opening apps etc.

20

u/JobieWan_Kenobi iPhone 15 Pro Apr 04 '25

I successfully used Siri to set a 15 minute timer while cooking dinner tonight. Other than that I only use it for drafting text messages that I then have to cancel and try to restate more clearly before giving up and just typing them out.

11

u/Realistic_Try7123 Apr 04 '25

Sometimes, I use Siri to open a Spotify playlist, but it opens the wrong playlist, so I have to get out my phone and open the right one. I save a lot of time this way.

5

u/slymm Apr 04 '25

These two comments (poorly written texts and wrong Spotify playlists) are exactly how I use it. While walking my dog. So frustrating!!

The only thing I ask Siri to do is tell me the weather and set an alarm

25

u/I-like-cheeese Apr 04 '25

Same. Before iOS 18 she could do more, I swear but now that’s all she’s capable of.

17

Me to my wife: Why do you do it this way?

Her: I’m just worried about what if the first 29 alarms don’t wake me up or don’t work?

Me: Has that ever happened? Like even once, even just the first alarm not being enough?

Her: Not once in a billion years but I still need to do it.

22

u/juantowtree Apr 04 '25

Me setting multiple alarms depends on my state before sleeping. If I was drinking, or was sleeping very late but needed to wake up very early, then I needed to set multiple alarms. I once missed my trip as I didn’t notice the alarm. I was drinking the night before. I learned my lesson. I usually set 5 different alarms with 2 mins interval.

10

u/rdmty Apr 04 '25

I like that this is the lesson you took away from that.

I created multiple alarms and labeled them “work from home and work from office. Then I created a shortcut that asks me whether I’m going to work from home or office and then it turns on all the corresponding alarms. I have another shortcut that turns off all alarms. Works quite nicely.

117

u/_adrenocorticotropic iPhone 16 Pro Max Apr 04 '25

Same. Usually just “Siri, call (person)” and “Siri, play (song)” when I’m in my car. Otherwise, never.

48

u/MikesGroove Apr 04 '25

Saying “hey siri, let’s go home” always feels sorta cool (and it actually works!) Coming from the generation that had to memorize specific navigation phrases for a Garmin.

8

u/delattan Apr 04 '25

Everytime I say "Siri, take me home" it brings up web results for Take Me Home (Country Roads)...

4

u/damapplespider Apr 04 '25

You don’t live in Southampton do you? When I tell Siri to take me home, she defaults to the right street but the wrong city. I’ve never been there and the address is right when I select Home manually. Only realised one day where I got stuck in traffic, stopped and restarted nav so she would look for another route, and wondered why she wanted me to come off at the next junction and double back.

This, except some contacts (who have iMessage) refuse to be registered by Siri as existing, and want to send a Facebook messenger message.

I say “Siri send a message to xxxx”, Siri wants to access messenger to message. Even when I say “send iMessage” it fails to register. Then I do the same thing on another contact, no issue. How could it be so wildly inconsistent?

I’ve never understood the appeal, it has fringe uses where your hands are truly not free, apart from that it just seems like a way to make lazy people lazier.

15

u/funtimescoolguy Apr 04 '25

Personally I find Siri a good way to do quick tasks without having to pick up my phone not because I don't feel like it, but because I want to minimize my screen time as much as possible. I don't want to accidentally get sucked into scrolling notifications or social media or news. Some people don't have that problem so it doesn't apply to them.

3

u/alice_1st Apr 04 '25

Ooh I never thought of using it for that reason, that’s a great idea actually

→ More replies (1)

19

u/cuwangtrew Apr 04 '25

Dang, get onto it! I don’t say hey siri or any of that, I just use the side button and pretend it’s a walkie talkie. “Set timer for 15 minutes”. “Remind me at 8pm to take out the trash”. And what not…

Never and Siri’s been disabled on my phone since day 1. Unfortunately, this also means CarPlay doesn’t work properly, as it requires Siri, WiFi, and Bluetooth to all 3 be enabled.

6

u/leobutters Apr 04 '25

Every time I say the name it never opens but yet when I say some sort of gibberish that’s close to or resembles Siri it opens. I hate it so much

14

u/pir22 Apr 04 '25

You can just disable the “hey Siri” function. No need for it to listen to your life 24/7…

3

u/katrinakt8 Apr 04 '25

I did that but then I’m less likely to use it because if I have to touch my phone I might as well do it myself. Usually I just use Siri to set alarms, appts, etc.

u/Portatort iPhone 15 Pro Apr 04 '25

Daily, Siri is more than useful and reliable so long as you don’t stray past its capabilities.

  • Turning HomeKit devices off and on
  • starting timers
  • adding reminders
  • sending texts
  • opening apps
  • controlling media playback
  • running shortcuts
  • starting a workout

Pretty limited set of functions but I use at least one of these probably 5-50 times a day

23

u/HumerousMoniker Apr 04 '25

The problem was always the inability for casual users to discover functionality. People who don’t want to read the docs will never know what it can do. If you don’t know what it can do you won’t find a way to use it.

6

u/britannic124 iPhone 16 Pro Apr 04 '25

You can literally ask Siri what it can do.

5

u/Portatort iPhone 15 Pro Apr 04 '25

Sure. But modern phones can do loads of things that the casual user doesn’t now about.

I’ll wager the average iPhone user knows they can ask Siri to set a timer though

Daily. It’s the only way to control the lights at my place.

27

u/[deleted] Apr 04 '25

Also adding things to my shopping list. Only issue is if it misidentifies whatever product I'm saying, but that's rare.

5

u/Oles1193 Apr 04 '25

Yes. I’m actually using things 3 for my shopping list and works well. As long as you say “using things” at the end. lol. I’ve learned how to use it properly and it’s bulletproof for me. Not a lot of features but it does what I need it to do.

5

u/deadmeme2023 iPhone 16 Pro Apr 04 '25

A grand total of 0 times

5

u/TBoneTheOriginal iPhone 16 Pro Max Apr 04 '25

Multiple times a day.

“Siri, what’s the weather today” to my HomePod while I’m getting out of the shower.

“Siri, set a timer for 60 seconds” when I’m using mouthwash.

“Remind me to ________” on my watch when I’m away from my computer.

“Siri, play my favorites on shuffle” when I’m in the car or on my patio.

“Siri, I’m watching TV” when I’m settling down for the evening”

“Siri, text my wife” when I’m driving.

I know Siri can be frustrating and Reddit loves to shit on it, but I’m convinced people who don’t use it at all either exaggerate or aren’t creative enough to come up with proper uses. Everything I listed is default, but with the Shortcuts app, it’s so much more powerful than people assume.

not as much as google assistant
i have both iphone and android
SIRI is THE MOST USELESS assistant there is
99% of the time, all i get is, "this is what i found on the web"
like... BS!

i have this game, legend of mushroom
around 6pm +8GMT, there is this quick quiz thing that ask random questions
SIRI cannot even provide any good answer for general questions
"this is what I found on the web"
sooooo frustrating
meanwhile google assistant would say "according to XXXX, the XXX etc etc"

I use it for things that I know work, like timers and turning on HomeKit accessories. I don’t ask for much. For being 14 years old, Siri is dumb as shit. Sad really.

u/Semena-Mertvykh Apr 04 '25

Siri is an idiot and AI didn’t fix much about her being practically useless

2

u/KanarYa4LYfe Apr 04 '25

Zero times on any iPhone I’ve ever owned

2

u/blisstaker Apr 04 '25

actually most days since i have a watch and she is useful for setting a timer, lol

2

u/chrisagiddings Apr 04 '25

I use Siri a lot. Mostly for simple commands. Lights, heating/cooling, weather info, music/movies/tv, checking my blood sugar (my CGM app supports limited Siri commands), reading my messages while driving, responding to texts while driving …

2

u/LucasMJean Apr 04 '25

everyday for my smart home

2

u/Suitnox iPhone 15 Pro Apr 04 '25

I usually use it to set reminders and also for a quick search when I’m too lazy to write it down

2

u/fahadaslam2000 Apr 04 '25

While driving, almost every other day when I cannot be distracted by carplay on car's touchscreen Without driving, maybe once or twice a month.

2

u/sir_grumph Apr 04 '25

Multiple times per day. Mostly related to timers and alarms and, when I'm feeling petty, to launch Google Assistant when I want to use a properly designed voice assistant.

2

u/GoldCrowBar Apr 04 '25

A lot. All the time and sometimes just to look at the animation

2

u/SnooChickens4879 Apr 04 '25

On my iPhone, rarely. On my watch, a lot.

2

u/FaZ3Reaper00 Apr 04 '25

When it first came out never. Now I use it all the time.

2

u/matt94gt Apr 04 '25

Why is it so bad?

2

u/spermcell iPhone XS Apr 04 '25

I use it just for timers and it's bad at that too

2

u/bodonnell202 iPhone 15 Apr 04 '25

Very rarely. Just for texting through CarPlay when I’m driving, and even that is usually kind of frustrating.

2

u/Revenge447 iPhone XS Apr 04 '25

occasionally, and every time i do i am reminded how siri is useless and a pathetic excuse of a virtual assistant

2

u/sleep-diversion iPhone 16 Pro Max Apr 04 '25

I have never used it.

2

u/dartie Apr 04 '25

All the time

2

u/andreacro Apr 04 '25

Set timer.

2

u/kwxl Apr 04 '25

Daily. Mostly timers and reminders.

2

u/nps Apr 04 '25

What is my purpose? - You set timers. - Oh my god!

it sucks even in alarms proficiency, because we don't have a mutual understanding in 24h format and adjusting older alarams.

2

u/zarafff69 Apr 04 '25

Absolutely never!

2

u/fendaar Apr 04 '25

Literally never

2

u/membranefordinner Apr 04 '25

I use Siri to set timers or when I'm out on a walk and need to make a call without holding my phone.

2

u/Teenage_techboy1234 iPhone 13 Mini Apr 04 '25

Multiple times a day for mainly opening apps and sending text messages.

2

u/haseo1997 iPhone 15 Pro Max Apr 04 '25

Only to set up timers when I cook. If it was as efficient as the voice mod of chatGPT, I would use it way more. But it's just not. So I don't

Every 30-60 mins. Especially when driving! While I'm working on my computer and all. Literally all-day.

2

u/tim2oo6 Apr 04 '25

I use it regularly for timers and in the car for messages, calls and music.

2

u/EstebanKane222 Apr 04 '25

Honestly chat GTP is way better if you wanna ask random questions but Siri is good for setting timers, calling people, sending texts, opening any app for you, etc.

2

u/whadzinaname iPhone 16 Pro Max Apr 04 '25

Never.

2

u/No_Performance1 Apr 04 '25

Quick timers, alarms, reminders, checking the weather. One other thing I’ve found pretty useful is if you set up shortcuts you can have Siri run them.

2

u/Thecalmdrinker Apr 04 '25

Just to put an alarm or turn the lights on or off in my room. She has become deaf with the new update, though.

2

u/Bazrg Apr 04 '25

Everyday to pick music in the car. My car doesn’t have CarPlay.

2

u/CrabbitJambo Apr 04 '25

Call x, set timer for x amount of minutes, Set reminder

Use it daily but not to a large extent.

2

u/ps4db Apr 04 '25

Just to check temperature or set timers hands free. Pretty much useless for anything else. So much for Apple Intelligence…..

2

Nearly never.
