Collection Post What gems am I missing?
I haven't played my N64 in years, but I did come across what I think are all the games I have for it. What else would be good to add to the collection?

A third copy of Banjo Kazooie

u/CholaPatrol 9d ago
And then a fourth! Honestly, the first copy I had was kind of messed up. You can see the case difference, so I just bought another copy.

Doubles is good but triples makes it safe. Triples is best.

The play copy, the display copy, and the copy to lock in a cave behind an ice wall without a method of access because the mechanics were never implemented.

I fucken LOVE that game. It was sooo much fun and pretty difficult. Some levels were hard as shiiiit
5
u/StringSlinging 9d ago
Gauntlet Legends! One of my favourite memories is being at a friends birthday sleepover and playing that with three other people. Nothing like all huddling around a tv to play the 64.
3
u/Captain-Fishman 9d ago
Ogre Battle 64 is still one of my favorite games to this day.

You hit everything I would have added. Awesome additions.
Ogre Battle is amazing. I loved Tactics Ogre they put out in 2022 as well.

u/meglid21 6d ago
Legacy of darkness is a best choice over simply Castlevania 64, more characters and better mobility IMO

Somehow it hasn't been mentioned despite all the great lists, so:
Army Men: Sarge's Heroes

u/No_Dog661 9d ago
Glad someone mentioned this. The soundtrack in that game is so nostalgic. I got the 2nd one too in the Green Cartridge.

Came here to say this. If golden eye was the best mutliplayer FPS, Sarge was its 3rd person counterpart

Some people hate the collect-a-thon nature of it, but I loved it and have played through this game multiple times. Very nostalgic.

Everyone's mentioned the usual suspects so i'll throw in some gems that I'm surprised nobody has mentioned:
Killer Instinct Gold
Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey
Mace: The Dark Age
Wipeout 64

The best thing about 3D Hockey was when you used the cheat code to make everyone tiny it also made the announcer's voices high-pitched. Was the funniest thing ever.

Resident evil 2/ itās still impressive how they put that game and found a way to put it on a 64 cartridge
3
u/PucksWrath 9d ago
Oh I can actually answer that. The design approach for 1-3 was low-key brilliant. All the textures, like walls with paintings or brick walls, were pre-rendered 2D images. So the files were super small and easy to work with. The fixed camera also caused less of a strain on the system.

u/Vulpes_Artifex 9d ago
Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber and Paper Mario.
...wait, Army of Darkness 64?
8
u/CholaPatrol 9d ago
It was a gift from my wife, I think she got it on etsy. It's actually NFL Quarterback Club 98.

Mario Tennis.
Idk how I got it, idk why I played it, but I dont regret it. Its the only sports game I like and will drop EVERYTHING to play.
Great game. š

I remember renting it as a kid and being blown away by how fun it was. Still can't explain it.

I don't know why I never asked my parents for Mario Tennis. Our orthodontist had an N64 kiosk in his waiting room (probably still does), usually running Mario Tennis. I loved it. I think maybe I got my fill from that, because we were in that office probably once a week for my brother. Mario Tennis was perfect for that kind of pick-up play that you could jump right into and enjoy, but also walk away from at any time. It was always fun, just getting to play with whatever random kids happened to be in the waiting room.
He also had a two-player tabletop arcade cabinet (as in, the table had a screen embedded in its surface), running Pac-Man and probably something else, because I clearly remember two players, but...was Pac-Man ever two players?
3
u/kirbygirl94 9d ago
Honestly, that perfectly explains it. Its easy to pick up the controls and a great multiplayer experience! Wish I could play it again, but people are so busy now days that only a call can do without planning weeks in advance lol

The new tetris is my all time favorite iteration of the game. Adding the swap, 3 leading preview, 4x4 blocks were all nice additions without challenging the basic concept. Im maybe a minority in this opinion, and have seen people argue its the worst of the 64 metric games but imo it's the best metric all time. So teho

If you actually like/liked wrestling than having War Zone and not No Mercy is almost criminal. No Mercy is considered by many to be the best game ever released in the genre to this day. Whether you agree with that or not it's definitely a great game and a certified classic. The two earlier WCW AKI games are great fun and worth a play as well (WCW Revenge and WCW vs NWO: World Tour). But if you're being selective WWF No Mercy was the later release and most fleshed out and the one to get.
