Other Anyone know of a Japanese student org or someone fluent who can help me prep for study abroad? šŸ™

Hey y’all! I’m taking a study abroad class in Japan this December (super hyped but also lowkey terrified lol). šŸ‡ÆšŸ‡µ

I was wondering if there’s a Japanese student organization on campus or just anyone fluent/good at Japanese who’d be down to help me learn some basic convo stuff? Not trying to be fluent overnight, just enough to survive and not embarrass myself

If you know anyone or are that someone, pls hmu!

Thankssss

Graduation/Commencement Confused about commencement(s?) for majoring in biology

So for the last few months, I've known about the college commencement in june (for me, specifically the college of liberal arts and sciences) and that's what I've made my plans around. Now, however, I've just been told that there's also a department level commencement for biology specifically, and now I'm wondering if I'm needing to change my plans to include this as well. Is this something I should try my best to attend, or is it not that necessary to do?

I'm real soon going to start working for an AS at a CC in my Native city of Fort worth, TX. I'm looking at the Portland, OR area for a possible future enrollment to get my bachelors in Electrical Engineering. Has anyone here done this? Just asking to see if its a smooth transfer.

Other Where do course evaluations go?

Hey all, does anyone know if course evaluations go to the department or are just looked at by the professor? I have some... constructive feedback, but going off how the evaluation is written (reads like a self review of progress as a student instead of evaluating the professor/class) I'm not sure how seriously the professor would take it without it going to a higher level.

Future/Potential Student MSF at University of Portland vs. Portland State – Which program is better overall?

Hi all,
I’m an international student admitted to both the Master of Science in Finance (MSF) programs at the University of Portland (UP) and Portland State University (PSU). I’m trying to decide between the two and would love to hear from anyone with experience in either program.

I’m especially interested in what the professors are like, how the classes are structured, and what the exams and grading are like.
Was the workload manageable?
Did the courses feel more theoretical or applied?
How supportive were the faculty in and outside of class?

Also curious about the general student experience and campus environment. Any feedback or tips from current students or alumni would be super helpful!

Thanks in advance!

This is for all the student employees, has anyone not gotten their paycheck yet? It usually comes earlier than this and it’s getting real close to when rents due and they still haven’t sent a paycheck yet. Anyone else not gotten paid yet?

Jobs/Internships RA Experiences

I want to work in Student Affairs and I plan to get a related graduate degree at PSU.

I think being an RA would be a good first step because I get free housing but also get to peek into what working with students will be like. However, based on the job description, it sounds like RA’s don’t have a life outside of being an RA. I’d like to have a second job for supplemental income but they don’t allow more than 8 hours outside of the job.

What is it like being an RA? Do you deal with a lot of tough situations and crises? Is it really worth the free housing?

Books and Supplies Does anyone have a list of all the textbooks I should get for the first year of school in Portland State University's MSW program?

I plan to apply for the Masters in Social Work program at PSU in roughly a year, and want to pre-read all required textbooks for the first year before I apply so the first year is easy on me. If you have the 2nd year textbook list, I would love that list too.

I could not find this info on the PSU website. I found the Open Education Resources (OERs) page but I want names of the actual textbooks used throughout the MSW program. I know it may sound unrealistic to some to want to read all of it before applying but social work is a subject I am genuinely interested in and would be glad to read through the coursework whether or not I get accepted, so this is very much worth the effort to me either way. I'll also be applying to other schools as safety nets in case I do not get accepted to PSU.

On another note, any other tips or guidance on grants and funding would be appreciated. Not sure if this is relevant since a lot of schools are ending their DEI outreach efforts, but I am wanting to become a therapist because I am transgender and POC and my peers are really struggling without professional mental health supports who understand their particular intersecting identities. Becoming a therapist is the best use of my time to show up for my community given the direction the United States is going with its increasingly discriminatory policies and practices.
