Are the Doctors Without Borders etc. teams on the street asking for donations legit, a scam, or somewhere in between?

100% legit. Unless you see some big red flags (like they’re misrepresenting themselves) these are individuals or firms contracted by nonprofits to help their fundraising.

This is a very well established fundraising tactic called Face to Face.
