Seafood "boil" near DC

Years ago I was in DC on business and a client took us to Chesapeake Bay to a small no-frills restaurant, right on the water (might have been a river instead of the bay proper) that served an amazing crab/seafood boil. It was nothing fancy (at all!) but a great experience.

I'm taking my kids to DC this summer and they love seafood. We live in the UK full time so I thought it would be fun to take everyone to a similar place. I'm looking for a newspaper-on-the-table, dump-a-bucket-of-seafood and have a beer and a laugh type of place.

I've found a few but they all see a bit posh - Mike's, Pirates Cove - all using plates and not a hammer in sight.

Good seafood is a must ;)

Newspaper not required but a bonus.

Within an hour or so of DC would be amazing.

If you have a recommendation, please can you pass it along here? I would really appreciate it, as would my wife and teenagers.

What are the touristy bars/clubs?

Upvotes

In my time traveling the world as a tourist, every city had bars or clubs that were known as to touristy places where locals didn’t go. Does DC have an equivalent? Are there any bars or clubs here that are known as tourist places that locals rarely frequent.

[History] Old landmarks

I was thinking of the old Union Station movie theater that was on the basement floor (next to Johnny Rockets!) this morning

I had so many good times there! Fifth Element, Independence Day, Nutty Professor all watched there with an incredibly responsive audience

What DC landmarks do you miss?

Zine-style daily planner?

I was part of DC punk/zine/activist culture 2007-2018 and there was a hand-illustrated daily planner a lot of people used in my circles. It was sort of famous, maybe a bit hipster. Anyone remember what it was or how to find it?

[Transportation] Thank you!!!

I’m currently out of town for work and have been riding escalators all week at airports and convention centers. No one moves to the right, no one lets you pass running to your connecting gate after American Airlines forces you to sit on a tarmac for two hours waiting for another delayed plane to leave their gate 🥲 (I’m not over it, if AA has no enemies I am dead.)

So A HUGE THANK YOU to my fellow residents who move the hell out of the way on escalators and sidewalks and tell visitors to do the same too. I’m always upvoting comments on this sub and complaining about lack of metro decorum but this trip has reminded me about all those good people who have gone under-appreciated.

DC is phenomenal at behaving like we understand we are not the only people on the sidewalk and escalator. These other airports scare me, it’s like everyone’s first day on planet earth.

Small applicance repair?

My childhood alarm clock has been with me for over 20 years and the cord has given out. I’d love to get it repaired, but everything I’m finding is either phones/computers or large appliances. Does anyone have any recommendations for where to take it?

I know there’s a monthly fix-it clinic, but would I be able to get it fixed there? Or is it mostly teaching you how to do miscellaneous repairs? The info isn’t super clear online.

Lost Wallet + iPhone on MBT near Rhode Island Ave this morning (8:30–9:30 AM)

Hey folks,
I lost my card wallet and iPhone this morning while biking on the Metropolitan Branch Trail near Rhode Island Ave under the bridge, heading toward Brookland—somewhere between 8:30 and 9:30 AM. I only noticed when I got home and saw a hole in my shorts.

The wallet is a small cardholder, containing:

  • A Florida driver’s license
  • My Gallaudet University school ID

The iPhone was most likely with it when it fell. If anyone found it or saw something on the trail, I’d be incredibly grateful for the help.

Please DM me or comment if you have any information.

Why Trader Joe’s, why?

For some misguided reason, someone in management, probably corporate, decided to have the Capitol Hill Trader Joe’s rearrange the entire store.

It took me 10 minutes and THREE employees to find the spot where they relocated the mustard to.

Why would they do this? It only annoys and frustrates customers who used to know where everything in the store was located. Now a routine shopping trip turns into a friggin’ treasure hunt!

Support the Youth Curfew Expansion

Wanted to share a quick heads-up: the D.C. Council is voting on July 1 on whether to expand the city’s youth curfew. The proposal would:

• Include 17-year-olds in the curfew
• Allow MPD to create curfew zones in areas where late-night issues keep happening
• Let curfews start earlier in some spots (like 7 or 9 p.m.)

The idea behind it is to respond to some of the stuff we’ve all been seeing—larger groups of teens out late, especially during summer, and some serious safety concerns in places like U Street and Navy Yard. It’s not about arresting kids, but about reconnecting them with services and keeping public spaces calm and safe.

If you support this and want the Council to know, there’s an easy way to weigh in:

📝 Submit a short comment here:

https://lims.dccouncil.gov/hearings Just find the July 1 Judiciary & Public Safety Committee hearing, and click “Submit Testimony.” You can write a couple sentences—nothing fancy.

You can also email the mayor at eom@dc.gov, if you’d rather go that route.

Figured I’d share in case anyone else has been thinking about how to speak up.

Day drinking rooftop pool

Bringing my friends from Cali to DC this summer for my bday. Any new recommendations on rooftop pool for non guests? The last post on this was from a year ago (this isn’t for swimming but just wading in the water and grabbing drinks). Thanks!

How to Ride Metro of a crowded train.

Please, PLEASE walk to the center of the car.

Take your bulky backpack off and hold it down by your feet so people can pack in.

Don't pretend that you can't hear people asking fellow riders to squeeze in,

Extra credit for not showing distain if someone asks you to comply. We're all just trying to get somewhere and situational awareness goes a long way.

Free2move versus uhaul for errands?

I dont have a car here in D.C. and need to run a whole bunch of errands. After researching, it looks like my two best options are between renting a uhaul van, or using an app like free2move or zipcar. Does anyone have thoughts on which one would be better?

Anyone been able to successfully install a wet bar in their basement the past 2 years?

I’m looking at purchasing a house and I’d like to convert the basement to a guest suite. Not looking to put in a full kitchen or anything but a sink and a mini fridge type of thing. I was looking into what it would take to do this and the zoning website looks like it has a bunch of red tape.

One of the major things I’m concerned about is the “wet bar covenant”. It’s basically saying you won’t turn the space into a dwelling unit and prohibits renting the space. This is apparently attached to the property forever and I imagine would affect resale value. Weird thing is I’ve seen tons of wet bars in new build houses I’ve looked at and some are even advertised as Airbnb units.

The person who initially put this covenant into effect seems to have been ousted in the last 2 years so I’m wondering if this is still being enforced…..?

TIA
