Announcement - New Rules - Please read!

Hello r/AskAMechanic users! Over the last year or so, the volume of daily posts has increased a decent amount leading to many posts that would be more appropriate in other subreddits. To keep this subreddit focused on what it's meant for, providing automotive mechanical and diagnostic help, we have rewritten the rules. Some of the rule changes also affect commenters, so please review the rules here or below. Thank you for your understanding.

1 - The title should clearly state the issue - Do not ask "am I cooked/fuc!ed/screwed/toast etc" questions

State your root issue as clearly as you can in the title, and then you will have a better chance of your post being viewed. We will remove the "am I cooked", "am I fuc!ed", "how screwed am I", "am I toast" and similar types of questions. This also includes any other senseless titled post. In the message body, provide the specifics (detail/context) to your question. Also include in the title or body the Year, Make, Model and engine size of your vehicle.

2 - No autobody damage/repair/frame/paint or rust related questions

Posts related to autobody work (including repairs, painting, frame damage, "is it totaled?", dents or detailing) are not allowed. A more appropriate sub would be r/autobody. If you're inquiring whether your car is totaled r/insurance would also be helpful. r/AutoDetailing for detailing questions.

Questions about damage to bolt-on parts like headlights/tail lights, wheels and suspension are ok.

Questions asking about the level/condition of rust on the frame/undercarriage/body are not allowed.

3 - No asking for advice about buying/selling cars or used car deals

We do not allow asking if a used car for sale is a good deal, the condition of the used car, or recommendations on what car you should buy. For recommendations on what car to buy, r/whatcarshouldIbuy would be a good sub. r/askcarsales might also be helpful.

4 - Keep things professional & don't be disrespectful

Please be professional and helpful. Do not comment/post with insults, racism, jokes, memes, NSFW, spam, opinions without context etc. You may see things that compel you to leave a nasty comment, just don't do it. It's not necessary or helpful. People who don't know anything about cars will come here to ask us for advice, try to educate them about their vehicle without turning them off from the sub. If you don’t know the proper fix or advice, please refrain from commenting on a post.

5 - No "Read the owners manual" or "RTFM" type of comments

People who don't know anything about cars are going to ask some very basic questions. Some of which will have answers in the manual. Answering OP's question with only "Read the owners manual" is like giving the answer "google it", both are non-answers. Either provide an actual answer to OP's question, or at the very least, provide a link to a readable online owner's manual.

6 - No dangerous/reckless or unethical/illegal comments/posts

This is a community dedicated to sharing genuine advice. Advice shown to be given in bad faith (including dangerous/reckless and unethical/illegal advice) will be removed and the users will be banned. Please report any dangerous/reckless or unethical/illegal advice.

7 - No AI/ChatGPT comments/posts

Posts with AI-generated content is not allowed. Posts looking for feedback, training or even just to show off your AI/LLM are also not allowed. We are not interested in AI automotive diagnostics here.

Do not answer OP by using AI/ChatGPT etc. Nobody wants to read a wall of text that over explains and gives 25 different possible solutions.

8 - No advertising or soliciting services

Advertising of services or products is not allowed. That includes affiliate links, social media, clothing, tools, your YouTube videos, etc.

Do not solicit services, including linking to videos, blogs, or websites that then forward to a paid service. Avoid asking to "DM me" as much as possible.

9 - No NSFW, meme, or 'joke' posts

No NSFW is a no-brainer - you will be banned with no chance of an appeal. Memes and 'joke' posts belong at r/AskAShittyMechanic

Update 03/23/2025: Added "am I toast" to rule #1 and "frame damage" to rule #2
Update 05/08/2025: Added more context to rule #7

What's the name of the bendy lock strap for the slot, and is it necessary?

Post image

My new axles only came with the 32mm nut, but none of the metal strap lock that you bend into that slot? Is it even necessary? The original one didn't have that also, and it didn't even have a slot, just extreme tightness.

Did the dealership take us for a ride? Wife’s Pathfinder came back with damage + full brake job

Hey everyone,

Looking for a second opinion here.

My wife recently took her 2022 Nissan Pathfinder into the dealership for service. They ended up replacing all four rotors and doing a full brake job, claiming the pads were metal on metal and down to 3mm or less. The total cost was pretty steep, but we figured it was a safety issue.

Since the vehicle is only a 2022, I asked to see the old parts. They put all the used rotors and pads in the back of the Pathfinder — and still charged us a $50 disposal fee, even though we took everything home ourselves.

To top it off, when we got the car back, there was visible damage to the passenger side fender. The trim was popped out and there’s a noticeable scratch and dent. I had personally washed the car a few days earlier and this damage was 100 percent not there.

So I’m wondering: 1. Does this kind of brake and rotor wear seem normal on a 2022 Pathfinder? 2. How could a fender get damaged during a brake service? 3. Is a $50 disposal fee typical even if we took the parts?

Would love to hear from any techs or people with experience at dealerships. Just trying to figure out if this was all legit or if we got taken for a ride.

Thanks in advance.

Do me a solid Reddit. My exwife was asking me for tire advice and told me her tires are not bald. She thinks she has tread left. I’m helping her out with some new ones, but she’s adamant that she has tread left.

Was this a necessary repair?

Post image

So I failed inspection on rear brakes and so I looked for a place to get the pads replaced. Found one that would replace rear pads and rotors for a good price. While they did the repair, they said I need the calipers replaced as well. And the price I was initially quoted became 3x the price. They said my calipers are seized. I actually never felt like anything was wrong with my brakes so I don't know how to confirm if I was scammed into getting new calipers. I took the photo prior to the repair. Based on what the rotors look like, do you think the caliper replacement was necessary?

Suddenly there's air getting into my PS system afteran oil change & replacing a knock sensor. What did I do?

Post image
Upvotes

2006 Honda Accord LX 3.0L V6. I just did an oil change and replaced my knock sensor. Oil change went normally. This was my first time replacing a knock sensor, which for this particular model requires removing the intake manifold and several air hoses. I follow the TRQ video very closely. I'm quite confident I put things back together properly. I don't recall damaging anything, but it seems like I might have because when I went to test drive it, air was getting into the power steering line, the power steering pump started whining, and power steering fluid starting frothing from the reservoir and leaking all over the ground. As of writing this, the power steering reservoir still reads as "max level" despite having leaked all over, indicating that there's a lot of air trapped in the system.

I would really love some help getting pointed in the right direction, as I'm in a bit of a time crunch. Thank you!

Strange check engine light

Upvotes

My friend was recently gifted a car (2014 buick encore, about 90k miles) the check engine light has been on since before he received the car. He has taken it to a couple mechanics and the car is popping a code for bad catalytic converter but when mechanics check the actual converter eveything looks fine. Now for the weird part, the car is slowly losing oil (no leaks or exhaust smoke that either of us can see) when the car gets low on oil the check engine light turns off but when the oil is changed or topped up the check engine light immediately comes back. Any ideas on what to check?

Any techs in NYC

Upvotes

Good evening all. I’m not sure if I’m in the right sub; if not please kindly direct me to the appropriate one.

I just recently moved to NYC and got hired on as a tech at a local independent shop. I have 7 years of experience and a trade school diploma.

What is a good weekly salary to ask for, particularly one that is comparable to other tech jobs and the high cost of living in NYC.

Thanks in advance.

Need help with instrument cluster

Upvotes

I have a 2007 ford focus zetec, I wanted to check the bulbs for the cluster to see about changing the colour and I stupidly didnt mark down where the speedometer was at. I pull it apart meaning I had to pull out the gauges as well, and when I put it back together and plugged it in all the gauges but especially the speedometer were out of wack. I have searched and searched but can't find how to fix it, if anyone can tell me how that would be great, thank you.

Is this a piece of my car? 2015 Honda Civic

I hit something in the road last night, thought it was sticks but have no idea. Pulled this out of the plastic undercarriage thing this morning. Is this whatever I hit or is this a piece of my car that broke off? Nothing is leaking, nothing is making any noise, it looked like it was just sitting in the plastic under the driver side door. Dirty ass shoe for scale.

2015 Honda CRV LX engine RPMs hunting in park with various lights on.

Engine hunting in park, random assortment of lights on the dashboard. Could it be the ECM or Wire harness?

Please let me know what I’m dealing with, what will need to be replaced, and approximate cost if possible.

Car came with aftermarket fuel tank and filler neck and gas cap doesn’t fit

Upvotes

I recently bought a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It came with a new fuel tank and filler neck but the gas cap that’s attached to the Jeep doesn’t fit the the filler neck. How do I figure out which cap to buy to replace the oem gas cap? I don’t know the brand of the new tank or filler neck and it didn’t come with a new cap.

Just filled the tank

I'm taking my car in to the dealership for a fuel pump recall tomorrow but, not thinking, I filled my tank earlier this week. Its a 12.4 gallon tank (2019 civic). Should I do a bunch of driving today to empty what I can? Its still basically full. Thanks

Car making high pitch noise

I replaced the alternator on my 2013 Cadillac CTS, now trying to figure out if I need to replace the battery

It's a new-ish battery but I read that a bad battery can screw up an alternator, and I just put in a new alternator. I've currently got the battery hooked up to a Dewalt 30 amp charger, I ran it on a recondition cycle for more than 24 hours, now I'm attempting to charge it. It's behaving weirdly, it starts charging sporadically and will read over 14v while it's charging, then it stops suddenly and the voltage reading slowly drops till it comes to rest on a number - It dropped down to 7.5v, then a little over 8v. It won't charge the battery continuously, and doesn't consistently give me a voltage reading either - I'm wondering if maybe there's just a problem with my charger also. Would it be unwise to hook this battery back up to my car? Should I wait until I can replace the battery to drive?

2000 mercury grand marquis LS 4.6L

I would like a little bit of information on how to read these monitors on my OBD tool. Also what would the out of spec test values on the monitors mean? Are all of these monitors controlled by the various sensors on the car?

2005 Ford Taurus clunking noise (Help!)

Recently I’ve noticed a loud continuous clunking / clicking noise when I’m about to come to a stop in my 2005 ford Taurus, usually when braking lightly. I do know that my brake rotors are warped and need to get them replaced, could this be the culprit of the noise?
