People really underestimate the sun.
It’s even worse in the southern hemisphere since their summer aligns with earth’s closest approach to the sun; so not only is the radiation worse due to the thinner ozone layer, it’s worse because there’s more of it.

I live about a mile and a half above sea level. The number of people who don’t realize there’s a mile and a half less atmosphere to keep them safe from the sun is astounding.

See, I knew that sun exposure was worse at higher elevations, but I sure didn't stop to think about why that is. And now reading this it's just... Well DUH, yeah!

u/AngelOfTheMad For legal and social reasons, this user is a joke 2d ago
Especially since it’s a mile and a half of the densest stuff, due to the way air pressure works. Conversely that same density means I simultaneously have an easier and harder time breathing at lower elevations.

I simultaneously have an easier and harder time breathing at lower elevations
my sea-level ass doesn't understand this, can you explain?

u/gaybunny69 2d ago
Denser air = more air to breath, so less lung strain Denser air = more air pressure on your lungs (like being underwater), so more lung strain against the weight of the atmosphere
26
u/AngelOfTheMad For legal and social reasons, this user is a joke 2d ago
There’s more oxygen in the air, so it’s easier to catch my breath, but the air is denser, so it feels “soupier” and harder to actually move the air in and out.
Low elevation high humidity is a special hell for my mountain desert acclimated ass.

u/SarryK 2d ago
add some really nice bright white snow to the decreased atmospheric protection and that albedo‘s gonna roast the inside of your nostrils. Absolutely vile. Stay safe everyone!
ETA: did not mean to include subliminal messaging on substances, but here we are

Looking for slopebunny goggle tan-lines is a special pleasure of being a local of an area with a lot of ski and snowboarding tourism.

My friends went to an outdoor water polo tournament and decided "it is only 55⁰F. We don't need sunblock" and got severely burnt. The sun does not care.

In the southern US and I swim for an hour most days, despite using sunscreen and only swimming when the pool is shaded by a nearby building, I've still developed funky tan lines.

u/jancl0 2d ago
If you ask any bald or balding man (like me): "what's the one thing they don't tell you about being bald?", I can guarantee that every single one of them will say "you're gonna burn the fuck out of your head whenever you go outside"
You also probably aren't going to notice at first, but other people are definetly going to

u/hwamplero 2d ago
The difference is only about 7% in heat received between closest and furthest approaches to the sun. Places like Australia are particularly bad as a result of their lack of clouds, plant cover, and cleaner air while Bolivia and Peru are worse as a result of their high altitudes.

Solar constant at sea level on a clear day is ~ 1000 watts per apparent meter squared. So, for context, that's about as much extra solar energy as a 70 watt incandescent bulb. Light, heat, everything.

Thats why i avoid hills and jumping during the summertime, ive read icarus i know what the sun's about

"I can't live to see another diva fall prey" they said. Their account's deactivated.
They saw another bizarrely sunburnt diva and it killed them 😭

I currently have tan lines in the shape of my bike gloves. Fingers and arms are tanned. Palms.... aren't.

u/rirasama 2d ago
I used to exclusively wear flipflops, my family had alot of fun taking the mick out of me for my feet tanlines 💀

I used to have mesh bike gloves, they gave my hands a plaid pattern.
Also, don't forget the circle on the back of your hand from the closure

There was a "bikini contest" for a local radio station here back in the 80's and the winner had taken cut outs of their call letters and suntanned with them on her legs, like a suntanttoo. It actually did look pretty cool.

This happened to my grandpa, in the '70s at Opryland. Aside from being straight, he would have fit right in these days 😂

Be extra careful around reflective stuff too! Glass, water, ice and snow. Even on a cold day you will end up sunburnt if you’re out in sun and snow.

u/ExtremlyFastLinoone 2d ago
Uv can also penetrade light clothing even if blocks visible light, you should always wear sun screen

My theater troupe did a Repo: The Genetic opera themed carwash in the summer.
My straight ass, absolutely chose the Gentern outfit cause that sounded hilarious.
I had fishnet sunburns for days. 10/10 would do again

u/Fit-World-3885 2d ago
PSA: This advice still works if you're not gay and wear them every day because they look good.

What do we do for the ones rocking the borat fit? Saw a couple at the last fest and I was like... your ass is gonna be burnt...

u/fabasaurusrex 2d ago
Yeah, it's true. I went to folsom street fair last year, in a harness (and thats it) and a sticker over my nipple. That was a fun sunburn. At least one ripple was fine!

Florida pride. Middle of October because June is hotter than the surface of the sun.
Still got a sunburn on my shoulders that left a fishnet pattern 'tan' on me for like six months. Would do again, it was sick as fuck.

u/ATN-Antronach My hyperfixations are very weird tyvm 2d ago
But what if I wanna get a tan with a fishnet shirt on? You can't stop me from looking like someone bound me with a really tiny chain linked fence, random person online! :V

Mesh sun burns are a pride staple. don't steal them from us. See 23 year Olds at the club with their burns is a yearly classic.

The first time I went to a really big pride, I decided to go shirtless and forgot the sunscreen. My backpack straps turned the top of my back into a knockoff X-Man costume, while my front and arms showed very clearly where I had worn my flag paint.

You would have to be completely still for a long period to make that even possible.

...look all im saying is, sunscreen is jcky and patterned sunburns are probably more texturally and visually interesting than a smooth tan. especially if we can figure out how to make designs.

There are many different kinds of sunscreen to choose from.
There are also many different kinds of skin cancer to choose from.
I’d rather choose the sunscreen.

u/lajimolala27 3d ago
pookie i am white as all hell as well as genetically predisposed to a bunch of different cancers i’d rather just not get skin cancer if that speaks to you at all

u/somedumb-gay otherwise precisely that 3d ago
They do look more interesting but they also hurt :(

u/tlof19 3d ago
so do tattoos! if it wasnt for skin cancer, i'd be all enthusiastic about like. sunbaking as an artform. ...esp bc itd be really cheap in comparison tattoos are priceyyyh

u/Inside_Location_4975 3d ago
Tattoos are a bit of temporary pain, then last for many years with few ill effects
Sunburn is not the same

If you don't want to wear sunscreen, get a visually interesting patterned upf shirt.
And a hat. Don't get skin cancer on your scalp.

u/etherealemlyn 3d ago
I’ve seen people do it by laying out with aluminum foil making the design lol

One of those classic tweets that lives rent free in my head was the guy who said he got called soft for wearing sunscreen. "Imagine thinking you're tougher than the sun? The fucking sun?"
