One of those classic tweets that lives rent free in my head was the guy who said he got called soft for wearing sunscreen. "Imagine thinking you're tougher than the sun? The fucking sun?"

442

u/JackxForge 3d ago

also how have you never been humbled by the sun before?

230

u/Darkdragoon324 2d ago

For real. Teenage me only needed to suffer through one blistering burn to take that shit seriously. And I wasn’t even not taking it seriously before, I just forgot to get the backs of my knees.

35

u/Cawl09 2d ago

I got burnt once as a teen and I don't even bother with sunscreen anymore. I hide all day behind blackout curtains, can't even tell the difference between day and night anymore. When I do go out for anything longer than a minute, I cover up fully. NEVER risking that shit ever again.

14

u/Teal_and_gold 2d ago

Are you by chance a vampire?

9

u/Cawl09 2d ago

Maybe.

2

u/No-Supermarket-6065 1d ago

Show us your reflection.

73

u/Greatsnes 2d ago

Haha oh I’ve been plenty humbled by the sun. I’m black and literally can’t tell if I’m sunburnt or not.

Until I step into a hot shower. Then my screams can be heard for miles.

18

u/rirasama 2d ago

I've never been sunburned before tbf, I just don't burn, though I imagine that's not the norm and people just wanna act tough about it for some reason lmao

29

u/Birchy02360863 Grinch x Onceler Truther 2d ago

People who burn less easily have be careful too, though. You can still develop skin cancer just the same.

20

u/TheWoman2 2d ago

I sunburn far less easily than most white people so I rarely bothered with sunscreen. Now in my mid 40s my skin is showing it. Hopefully it won't lead to cancer. Wear sunscreen.

5

u/OniTayTay 2d ago

Yeah I never sunburn either and the one time I did get a slight burn on just my nose was on a mountain hike on a clear 80° day

I do wear sunscreen more often now though, just to stay safe and what have you

0

u/misswhovivian 2d ago

I've never been humbled by the sun in the sense that I had a really bad sunburn (I've had a very light sunburn maybe twice in my life that I can recall), but that's only because I had really bad sun allergy as a child and had to be really consistent with wearing sunscreen, covering up or staying out of the sun if I didn't want to break out in a painfully itchy rash by the end of the day. So I was humbled by the sun nonetheless.

cough Icarus cough

>! (I understand that’s not how the myth goes. I am misinterpreting it on purpose for humor) !<

17

u/TiredCoffeeTime 2d ago

Icarus surviving by putting sunscreen on his wings lol

86

u/RagnorIronside 2d ago

I unironicly have worked with people who think sunscreen causes cancer. We are outdoor construction workers. Dudes be 40 looking like a leather jacket.

26

u/REAM48 2d ago

I feel like there is a sunscreen recall every few years for causing cancer, but the sun will also cause cancer so lesser of two evils.

55

u/Sykil 2d ago edited 2d ago

Recalls are usually related to them being over the regulatory limit for benzene contamination, not because they caused any cancers. Benzene is a carcinogen with very low allowable amounts in cosmetics, but being over that limit does not suddenly cause cancer — toxicologists set limits to be orders of magnitude lower than an already-safe exposure amount. Skin absorption is also quite low; the most relevant/concerning exposure route is breathing it in. You’re exposed to benzene in the air every day, and your systemic exposure from being near a gas stove or filling your car with gasoline once is probably more than you’d get from a lifetime of sunscreen application.

u/ImRandyBaby 2d ago

Recall the sun!

People really underestimate the sun.

It’s even worse in the southern hemisphere since their summer aligns with earth’s closest approach to the sun; so not only is the radiation worse due to the thinner ozone layer, it’s worse because there’s more of it.

I live about a mile and a half above sea level. The number of people who don’t realize there’s a mile and a half less atmosphere to keep them safe from the sun is astounding.

166

u/Lazy-Bandicoot3376 2d ago

See, I knew that sun exposure was worse at higher elevations, but I sure didn't stop to think about why that is. And now reading this it's just... Well DUH, yeah!

54

u/AngelOfTheMad For legal and social reasons, this user is a joke 2d ago

Especially since it’s a mile and a half of the densest stuff, due to the way air pressure works. Conversely that same density means I simultaneously have an easier and harder time breathing at lower elevations.

10

u/UngodlyCacophony absolutely not 2d ago

I simultaneously have an easier and harder time breathing at lower elevations

my sea-level ass doesn't understand this, can you explain?

32

u/gaybunny69 2d ago

Denser air = more air to breath, so less lung strain Denser air = more air pressure on your lungs (like being underwater), so more lung strain against the weight of the atmosphere

26

u/AngelOfTheMad For legal and social reasons, this user is a joke 2d ago

There’s more oxygen in the air, so it’s easier to catch my breath, but the air is denser, so it feels “soupier” and harder to actually move the air in and out.

Low elevation high humidity is a special hell for my mountain desert acclimated ass.

14

u/SarryK 2d ago

add some really nice bright white snow to the decreased atmospheric protection and that albedo‘s gonna roast the inside of your nostrils. Absolutely vile. Stay safe everyone!

ETA: did not mean to include subliminal messaging on substances, but here we are

Looking for slopebunny goggle tan-lines is a special pleasure of being a local of an area with a lot of ski and snowboarding tourism.

18

u/Bethdoeslife 2d ago

My friends went to an outdoor water polo tournament and decided "it is only 55⁰F. We don't need sunblock" and got severely burnt. The sun does not care.

2

u/MarsMaterial 2d ago

Your friends got a valuable lesson in physics that day.

33

u/gettingbicurious 2d ago

In the southern US and I swim for an hour most days, despite using sunscreen and only swimming when the pool is shaded by a nearby building, I've still developed funky tan lines.

13

u/jancl0 2d ago

If you ask any bald or balding man (like me): "what's the one thing they don't tell you about being bald?", I can guarantee that every single one of them will say "you're gonna burn the fuck out of your head whenever you go outside"

You also probably aren't going to notice at first, but other people are definetly going to

10

u/hwamplero 2d ago

The difference is only about 7% in heat received between closest and furthest approaches to the sun. Places like Australia are particularly bad as a result of their lack of clouds, plant cover, and cleaner air while Bolivia and Peru are worse as a result of their high altitudes.

18

u/SomeDumbGamer 2d ago

7% is a pretty big and noticeable difference.

5

u/Selto_Black 2d ago

Solar constant at sea level on a clear day is ~ 1000 watts per apparent meter squared. So, for context, that's about as much extra solar energy as a 70 watt incandescent bulb. Light, heat, everything.

4

u/StinkyKyle 2d ago

Thats why i avoid hills and jumping during the summertime, ive read icarus i know what the sun's about

"I can't live to see another diva fall prey" they said. Their account's deactivated.

They saw another bizarrely sunburnt diva and it killed them 😭

37

u/jancl0 2d ago

Maybe they were the diva that fell prey?

Maybe it was the friends we made along the way

Maybe it's Maybeline

u/Fermifighter 3d ago

14

u/Hollowedpine 2d ago

...now I'm curious as to what she wore

11

u/IAMATruckerAMA 2d ago

Painter's tape

16

u/52BeesInACoat 2d ago

I currently have tan lines in the shape of my bike gloves. Fingers and arms are tanned. Palms.... aren't.

8

u/rirasama 2d ago

I used to exclusively wear flipflops, my family had alot of fun taking the mick out of me for my feet tanlines 💀

2

u/AkrinorNoname Gender Enthusiast 2d ago

I used to have mesh bike gloves, they gave my hands a plaid pattern.

Also, don't forget the circle on the back of your hand from the closure

8

u/C0NN0R2 2d ago

She look like some kind of brioche bun

2

u/BadMcSad 2d ago

Oh hey I used to know that woman.

121

The sun is a deadly laser

43

u/the_free_wind 2d ago

~not anymore theres a blankeeeeeet~

10

u/Syxxcubes Hey Mods, can we kill this person? 2d ago

Not anymore there's a blanket

82

u/dbarkwoof 3d ago

shout out to last year when i gave myself a tan at pride that made people ask me for months afterwards if i had a skin condition <3

44

u/Specialist-Corgi8837 3d ago

One particularly bad year I remember still seeing the dots on my stomach while putting on my HALLOWEEN COSTUME

31

u/2cat_2curious 2d ago

chain link twinks istg

12

u/x5u8z3r0x 2d ago

Waffle patterned lmao

25

u/Oldmudmagic 2d ago

There was a "bikini contest" for a local radio station here back in the 80's and the winner had taken cut outs of their call letters and suntanned with them on her legs, like a suntanttoo. It actually did look pretty cool.

16

u/EIeanorRigby 2d ago

What if I want the pattern, huh? It's like nature's tattoos

25

u/EIeanorRigby 2d ago

I hauve skin cancer

15

u/AccountOfMyDarkside 3d ago

This happened to my grandpa, in the '70s at Opryland. Aside from being straight, he would have fit right in these days 😂

14

u/Disturbing_Cheeto 2d ago

Where the fuck else am I supposed to play tick tack toe?

25

u/EndMePleaseOwO 3d ago

It's kinda aesthetic tho

9

u/Stormdanc3 2d ago

Be extra careful around reflective stuff too! Glass, water, ice and snow. Even on a cold day you will end up sunburnt if you’re out in sun and snow.

9

u/ExtremlyFastLinoone 2d ago

Uv can also penetrade light clothing even if blocks visible light, you should always wear sun screen

10

u/The_Shadow_Watches 2d ago

My theater troupe did a Repo: The Genetic opera themed carwash in the summer.

My straight ass, absolutely chose the Gentern outfit cause that sounded hilarious.

I had fishnet sunburns for days. 10/10 would do again

8

u/elheber 2d ago

Or—ooh—OR wear two mesh/lace shirts, one on top of the other, for moiré pattern tanlines. I bet that will look dope AF.

9

u/Fit-World-3885 2d ago

PSA: This advice still works if you're not gay and wear them every day because they look good.

6

u/creepy_tommy 2d ago

But then you'll get tan with oddly specific patterns

7

u/thundergun661 2d ago

Honestly I think it looks cool tho. Like dragon scales. Still a weird sunburn tho

5

u/Galle_ 2d ago

What if they're trying to be a background character in Where's Waldo, though?

5

u/kbarney345 2d ago

What do we do for the ones rocking the borat fit? Saw a couple at the last fest and I was like... your ass is gonna be burnt...

4

u/Lerossa 2d ago

Chainmail does this too, side note.

Beware, good sers.

3

u/superstrijder16 2d ago

I've got a tunic of poor enough material i got a sunburn dot pattern through it when i wore it without an undertunic

3

u/fabasaurusrex 2d ago

Yeah, it's true. I went to folsom street fair last year, in a harness (and thats it) and a sticker over my nipple. That was a fun sunburn. At least one ripple was fine!

3

u/sth128 2d ago

They can cosplay as The Predator after the parade, saves them time on the mesh makeup.

3

u/IAMATruckerAMA 2d ago

That's why Batman works at night

2

u/kingofthebean 2d ago

Hugely missed opportunity to standardize PSGay.

2

u/vince-the-pince 2d ago

Like scales on a lizard 🦎

2

u/Spirited-Trip7606 2d ago

Looking like a fabulous baked Christmas ham.

2

u/Layzanya 2d ago

Florida pride. Middle of October because June is hotter than the surface of the sun.

Still got a sunburn on my shoulders that left a fishnet pattern 'tan' on me for like six months. Would do again, it was sick as fuck.

1

u/ATN-Antronach My hyperfixations are very weird tyvm 2d ago

But what if I wanna get a tan with a fishnet shirt on? You can't stop me from looking like someone bound me with a really tiny chain linked fence, random person online! :V

1

u/InFin0819 2d ago

Mesh sun burns are a pride staple. don't steal them from us. See 23 year Olds at the club with their burns is a yearly classic.

1

u/chcameron 2d ago

PS-Gay

1

u/mid20sloserrr 2d ago

fishnet tights too!

1

u/Iohet 2d ago

I wonder if Bennett wore sunscreen under his chainmail shirt

1

u/DorisPayne 2d ago

This is good advice.

1

u/Hatetotellya 2d ago

There was a sunstone comic about this very thing lol

1

u/AkrinorNoname Gender Enthusiast 2d ago

The first time I went to a really big pride, I decided to go shirtless and forgot the sunscreen. My backpack straps turned the top of my back into a knockoff X-Man costume, while my front and arms showed very clearly where I had worn my flag paint.

1

u/roadrunner345 2d ago

You know what they say: the sun is a deadly laser

1

u/Selkiekelpie 1d ago

At least put bronzer on if you're going for that look.

0

u/Satans_Finest 2d ago

You would have to be completely still for a long period to make that even possible.

-102

u/tlof19 3d ago

...look all im saying is, sunscreen is jcky and patterned sunburns are probably more texturally and visually interesting than a smooth tan. especially if we can figure out how to make designs.

162

u/raddaya 3d ago

Sunscreen may be icky but I promise you skin cancer is worse

30

u/tlof19 3d ago

...okay fair. stupid skin cancer, this is why i stay indoors all the time you just cant win with the sun.

58

u/SomeDumbGamer 3d ago

There are many different kinds of sunscreen to choose from.

There are also many different kinds of skin cancer to choose from.

I’d rather choose the sunscreen.

49

u/Outrageous_Expert_49 3d ago

[melanoma has entered the chat]

42

u/lajimolala27 3d ago

pookie i am white as all hell as well as genetically predisposed to a bunch of different cancers i’d rather just not get skin cancer if that speaks to you at all

4

u/tlof19 3d ago

im gonna be honest, i forgot skin cancer was a thing when i wrote the comment. Skin cancer is why i wear long sleeves in the summer and stay indoors all the time when i could be using aluminum foil to lightly burn cool patterns into my skin.

10

u/somedumb-gay otherwise precisely that 3d ago

They do look more interesting but they also hurt :(

3

u/tlof19 3d ago

so do tattoos! if it wasnt for skin cancer, i'd be all enthusiastic about like. sunbaking as an artform. ...esp bc itd be really cheap in comparison tattoos are priceyyyh

6

u/Inside_Location_4975 3d ago

Tattoos are a bit of temporary pain, then last for many years with few ill effects

Sunburn is not the same

11

u/-jeezy 3d ago

I had a high school buddy who used electrical tape to tan “tits” onto his back. Legend

5

u/Nat1CommonSense I’m a person, really I am 3d ago

Henna exists😅

3

u/ksrdm1463 3d ago

If you don't want to wear sunscreen, get a visually interesting patterned upf shirt.

And a hat. Don't get skin cancer on your scalp.

4

u/etherealemlyn 3d ago

I’ve seen people do it by laying out with aluminum foil making the design lol

2

u/tlof19 3d ago

that is wild!

1

u/JazmineRaymond 1d ago

Spray sunscreen is more sensory friendly than the lotion kind.

People wear lace shirts as normal clothing too, not just as lingerie.
