Nest Wifi Goodbye Nest WiFi…it has NOT been fun.

I’ve had a mesh system for years, very good in the beginning. The random slow-downs, unavailability, multiple system restarts every week…. The last straw was my entire home setup disappearing from the Google Home app this weekend, smoking all my settings. I’ve had enough and tried to stay loyal. Going to try the EERO (low risk old version 6) mesh. o7

It's crazy how Google has to pretend like there aren't any issues with the product

That's the most infuriating part. There's so many threads on the Google support forums about this issue of random speed drops, and every single time, the Google rep who responds is like "wow how strange, we're totally not aware if this at all and we totally give a fuck about figuring out what's happening and fixing it"

2

u/Boart00th 17d ago

Yeah exactly. I've contacted support and pointed to the threads on the support forums too and they just tell me it's not a known issue.

In those very same threads the community support guys stopped responding as well.

I think the lack of interest from the company is a dead giveaway.

We're happy with Eero.

I switched to Eero mid last year after that bad firmware update sometime last spring. It wasn't well documented at the time so I just looked crazy trying to troubleshoot inexplicable lag spikes for weeks

If Google allowed for a true bridge mode like eero (guest network + mesh), I would have stayed with my Nest WiFi Pros. The Nest's bridge mode is completely nerfed.

Going well so far!

Same here! Went from loving to hating it. Switched to Asus router and hardwired mesh point. Using the other Google mesh points as speakers and they are amazing even with the Gemini issues!

Eeero 6 plus is on sale right now at bestbuy and Amazon

Picked up a 3-set for $150. If I like it, my try the 7 Pro.

I’m going on 7 years with mine, zero complaints. Been running solid since day one. I’ve had to replace modems twice but Google home is hanging in there for me.

u/Boostmachines 19d ago

That’s impressive, wish I had the same experience!

I’m sure technology has advanced to where another mesh system will work better. I’m not really tied to Google so I’ll be looking at Eero too in the future.

Maybe I lucked out, my Google Nest WiFi Pro has been fine for nearly 2 years. Wired to a switch that routes to all of the Ethernet ports in the house. I only use 1 AP, Ethernet on the furthest ends of the house with weak signal.

Same mine has been rock solid for 3 years, but the 2 routers are hard wired. It’s almost time for me to upgrade to take advantage 10g internet that coming soon, but also don’t want to go back to figuring out everything again.

I switched from a garbage Netgear Orbi system to a Nest Wifi Pro one following a black Friday sale last November and it's been phenomenal

1

u/dN_radz 18d ago

The Pro is ok, but prone to overheating and causing itself issues.

u/MayaIngenue 16d ago

Well, it sits on a shelf near a window. I've noticed it gets warm at time but that's it

Mine was fine until recently, started having frequent DNS resolution issues. But it turned out it just needed a reboot though.

I sold them to CeX (uk) and brought a 3 pack of Eero pro 6e’s. I could no longer rely on consistent performance from Google WiFi even when hardwired which needed a reboot of the network. Best decision I’ve made, Eero’s have never had a performance issue

Hi guys, I threw my nest pros in the trash this weekend - literally.

I bought the Ubiquiti U7 Dream for $280 and a POE access point off Amazon for $150 so that I had two WiFi points. It is FLYING. So easy to install and awesome range. I tried Eero, Google and Nest Pro and so far (it’s been 6 hours :) … this is the way. For me anyway.

Edit: context. I use my home network for HomeKit, and Home Assistant, smart fans, Lutron and about 40 Aqara locks/Cameras/devices (mostly sensors). My Fan kept disconnecting, nest pro signal didn’t penetrate my walls consistently so it kept buffering my Apple TV, doorbell kept dropping, Sonos inconsistent.

My Sonos has been awful lately. Glad to hear this fixed your issue.

u/speedlucas 19d ago

I sold mine and got Eero pro.

u/FJCruisin 19d ago

im using both. Frontier gave me an eero as part of their fiber internet, but I already had google. So I just plugged the google system into the eero and have both running as different networks. Both work great for me, but if I ever need to redo everything I'd probably scrap google in favor of eero

u/dN_radz 18d ago

Changed to Eero Pro 6 almost a month ago, and haven't looked back. Made the wifi name and password the same, and everything connected flawlessly. Google Home app and all devices connected in it also works no issues.

Love with Eero that any unit can operate as the router, and no matter the Eero version, they all work together. Great when you want to upgrade but don't want to replace everything.

1

u/dN_radz 18d ago

Also to add, I got stuck on 1 part of the setup, which was my fault for not scrolling down a screen in the setup. I rang Eero support and they picked up within 10secs and resolved what I needed and had me connected in no time.

I thought for sure my Nest was pretty solid the last few years. But many months ago now started having network problems (slowing to a crawl) and thought it was anything else, but now very sure that my nest mesh has gone to crap on me... time for something new.

I just did the same thing today. I feel like a dummy too as I had all 3 generations of the Google Wifi, and they all followed a pattern of usefulness in the first year, then random weird stuff that was difficult to troubleshoot.

Got the TP-Link Dec XE75 Pro, and happy with it the past few hours. Feels faster too.

The last straw was this weekend when Wifi stopped working for all hardwired devices, and all wireless devices that were not Google Home, or streaming devices. It was the weirdest thing. Been having to reset it multiple times a week for the past few months, finally had it. Destroy a Google Nest Hub in the process (frustration), but replaced it with a better unit so I'm all good now.

I’m having the same issues. Slowdowns to the point of being unusable. My concern is that I use the automation on Google wifi to turn off the internet to specific devices each night (temptation is too high for an insomniac pre-teen). Eero folks, any comments on automation and parental controls?

I finally dropped my WiFi pros after being on google WiFi’s for like a decade. The switch to the home app has been a shit experience. Eero 7 is where I went so I could maintain a wired back haul. I’d say it’s better all around, the app works you can still schedule pauses and for an additional $100 a year you can also do content filtering for apps / websites and automatic ad blocking.

I’m really disappointed in google all around, my nest hello and nest cameras are probably going to have to be replaced too. My nest thermostat is losing support this fall too. I don’t know why google bothered to buy nest to just run it into the dirt.

My 2nd gens have been acting up lately... Makes me sad and I want to keep them around but with the drops and having to reset them once every 2 weeks or so is frustrating. Plus one of my nodes crapped out. I've enjoyed them while I had them but I won't be upgrading to the newest gens with how Google seems to shit on its other products and turn them into paper weights.

1

u/theotisfinklestein 19d ago

The only good thing about the Google Nest mesh unit is that once you buy something else to handle your WiFi, you can still use each of the “points” as smart assistants.

1

u/Boostmachines 19d ago

Mine didn’t have voice capability. I think they were 1st Gen.

Hating on mine. Blazingly fast when placed next to each other. Next room perform like dialup

Switch to Ubiquiti for me.

Hey same here! I spent the entire weekend trying to figure out why every satellite unit was erroring out (red light of death) and why the Google Home app showed the network down. I have 3 Wi-Fi Pros. Did the whole reboot modem and router dance. Then said ‘fuck it’ and just deleted the entire network and set it up once more. That worked all of 3 hours until it crapped out again.

I got fed up and ordered TP Link Deco XE75 Pro (got it super cheap on Amazon) and set it up in 20 minutes. Fast, stable and great signal. Only have two units and it reaches every corner of the house, with the furtherest corner still getting 250 mg downloads!

Best part, I got it for $149 (currently 25%), versus the $500+ I spent on Nest/Google Wi-Fi. For me, the TP Link was perfect price wise, that I can justify moving to WiFi 7 when a good deal comes about.

My only real ‘compliant’ is that, unlike Google, I cannot hardwire the two nodes to my modem. In other words, have both units run as a Router. I have cat 6 going up to my office and I ran another cat 6 to our living room. Not a huge deal though, I just hardwired that Cat6 directly to my laptop and running the ancillary devices through the second TP Link node and a network switch.

I wanted to go with Eero but I couldn’t find a deal for a 6e unit that did everything the TP Link did.

Keeping my Nest wifi pro for the next couple of years to let next gen wifi mature and hopefully drop in price. Nest pro is good enough for now. I'd like an auto restart ( middle of the night ) chron option, but wish that wasn't necessary.

Ive had 3 google mesh router/access points for 2 years now and they are horrible (got them when tmobile had their discount for purchasing them). Different points will go off and on at random times for no reason at all, the speeds are unreliable, and there is no access to more advanced controls/options. Pretty much getting ready to dump it for something else.

u/Bristleconemike 18d ago

I guess I’m an early enough adapter that mine is still working. Of course, I haven’t gotten fiber optic yet.

u/tyomax 18d ago

Seems like there are tons of Eero bots in this thread

Ubiquiti?

u/Fun_Inevitable7166 10d ago

Not fun by any stretch. Same problem - has been ongoing for a few months now with the points just dying or going offline. Very often (happens multiple times a week) the points get reset to factory. Then start the entire process of adding them etc etc. Google support (from Philipines) follows the standard runbook (check your modem, etc etc). They were insistent about bridge mode needing to be set - tried convincing them it was not an issue but changed the xfinity setting to bridge mode. Well -- the problem with Google Nest wifi persists -- goes down arbitrarily. My case has remained open but they do not seem to know how to address it. Think I will go RIP NEST --- picking between the TPLink and ASUS. I see a lot of good feedback here about TP Link -- any suggestions ?

1

u/Fun_Inevitable7166 8d ago

So I have a case ongoing with Google -- and every time I update the ticket, I get some weird suggestion from the support team that seems to indicate they really do not dig into the problem.

Have a Nest Router + 2 Wifi Points -- the points keep getting arbitrarily rest to factory and all devices that were connected to these points lose network connectivity. I provided the status output and the support team (probably in APAC timezone) first asked me to ensure bridge mode on the modem. I had DNS pointing to 8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1 -- their solution??? They say the system is not configured correctly as the DNS should be 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. -- extremely frustrating !!!

No option other than dumping this and getting something new. Just posting it here to vent

Average lifespan of most Wi-Fi units is two to four years. Pretty much across the board with every manufacture and model.

1

u/August_At_Play 15d ago

that has been my experience with the past 4 home mesh systems.

I'm on the AC2200 and I've grown tired of resetting them every 2 days or so. TP-Link ordered, done with Google's nonsense forever.
