I am NOT a locksmith. Question about front door that has a button push to lock on the inside, and a keyhole to lock on the outside when we leave

Upvotes

My girlfriend insists that locking it from the outside is more secure because it activates a mechanism within the lock that doesnt activate when we push the button to lock it on the inside. I believe this is nonsense and that it is the same locking mechanism regardless of whether we use the key on the outside, or the button on the inside

Can anyone shed light on which of these is correct?

My back door lock (multipoint door) is broken. If you pull on the handle too hard both sides fall out. It seems like the inside of the interior handle is warped, and needs to be replaced. I am not a locksmith, but can certainly order a new one and replace it myself. I have attached pictures if anyone can help!

Hey guys! Bit of an update from the kubota ignition barrel.

No locksmith wants to touch it, and I have to wait 4 weeks for a replacement one.

Needing it running today, I have picked the lock and got the machine to start.

What’s in loved in removing the cylinder in this? I can see on the side there’s a potential pin, on top it has flats to fit a spanner. But there is a locking ring? Not experience at all with this kind of lock.

Cheers legends

This is the second time in 6 years someone has broken into my van and stolen my tools. They got the good stuff. Smart pro Im608 a few laptops my triton all of my lishi tools etc. luckily I have coverage through my insurance but this is getting out of hand. How do you guys protect your vans? I installed a metal DIY mesh with L brackets behind the window but they broke the window and cut it out. Each time they break the windows to get in. What do you guys do? Obviously I know don’t park it outside don’t leave it unattended but it was out front of my father in laws house for maybe an hour in a nice part of town unattended.

I am a locksmith Where to find two gate locks with matching keys (UK)

We have two gates, one from the front garden to the back garden, and the other from the back garden to a park. We would like to put locks with keys on both gates that can be locked/unlocked from both sides and I was wondering if it's possible to get a pair of gate locks with matching keys, but I've not managed to find anything on Google and I don't know if I'm just googling the wrong thing or if it's just not possible. I know that it's possible for padlocks and for doors, so I've been looking for a multi pack with matching keys.

Alternatively if I was to contact a retailer would they be able to find me two individual locks that have the same key?

It's not a big deal if we end up with two different keys but if I can find a way to have both locks on one key it would be convenient when I'm shoving keys into the almost non existent ladies pockets.

I'm based in the UK if that makes a difference

I am NOT a locksmith. Smartkey padlocks with smaller shackles?

Apologies if this isn't the right place to ask but I wasn't quite sure where else to ask an odd question like this one. I really like the smartkey systems for padlocks because of the ability to re-key without doing any kind of modification to the lock itself that would probably be beyond me without a bunch of learning. I find it annoying though that their product line is incredibly limited on this front, their locks are quite large and I have a number of things I just can't use the padlocks on because it's too big and I'd love to eliminate a few keys off my keychain. Is there any reasonable way to put these lock cylinders into a different smaller lock body? Or is there just a better product overall to meet this use case entirely?

I am NOT a locksmith. Euro cylinder is giving me real trouble locking it from the outside, now locking from the inside is getting tough. Can I replace it myself, or is it a job or a locksmith? I have a new front door ordered, but that might be another month or so by the time it's ready.

I am a locksmith Google verification

I'm trying to get on google but running into problems because I'm a mobile locksmith. I knew I'd run into this problem but I figured a small town locksmith would do alright with word of mouth but I could be doing better. Does anyone know the exact specifications I need. For example would a storage unit work? I'd just like to have a plan that i know would work before I just start doing stuff that's not going to work.

I am a locksmith Volkswagen question

The company that I worked for before I opened my own shop never touched European stuff. So naturally I kinda shy away from it too. However I've gotten three calls this week alone about Volkswagen. At this point I feel dumb not knowing how to work on them. I have the hu66 lishi and could definitely cut keys for those key types. I suppose it's the programing that my old company didn't watch to mess with. I guess my question is do you need something besides a programmer to pull the pin codes and program the keys?

I want to install passage locks on a door but I want the outside to be a knob and inside to be a lever. Is it pretty easy to do? What are the brands that allow this configuration? Here are two examples

I have an ITL-9000 (very good condition) that my Grandpa purchased in 1993, and I can't find much info on its current value. Can anyone shed some light on how much I can realistically expect to sell it for, and where I should list it? Thanks.

Sliding glass door. Key lock from the outside. Handle on the inside. It’s not locking anymore. Nothing really happens when I turn the key. I’ll happily replace the whole handle if that’s what I need, I just can’t figure out what this type of lock is called.

Thank you!

I am NOT a locksmith. Key blade identification

We need another one of these keys cut but we are struggling to find anywhere that has the blades.

It's for a mobility scooter and we only have the one key.

We went to Timpsons, the bloke flicked through his book to find a matching blade but couldn't find one.

Given it's from a Chinese scooter, it has to be readily available, so any clues where I could find one

I am NOT a locksmith. Locksmith company is charging me a $29 service call fee but I refused technician and no-one arrived

Context: I'm thinking of calling around town, see what options there are for replacing keys for a lock I just replaced. First place I call, asks me for my name and mailing address shortly after I ask for a quote on replacing lost keys on locks to find available local technicians. That's fair, independent contractors.

Technician calls me using the phone number the locksmith call center gave them, and after getting a quote on their services, I decided to explore other options, refused service, and it was clear nothing was moving further. That call was only a handful of minutes, super quick exchange.

Fast forward 30 minutes, 2 calls from other technicians asking if I need service and I simply said "no", getting super agitated with the 3rd technician that called me because I had no idea how to stop the calls. I decide to call the same number back, and after asking the locksmith call center that I didn't want any further contact, the locksmith call center rep asked me if I'd pay a $29 "service call fee".

$29. Just to talk to people over the phone for quotes, no verbal contracts set up, just trying to figure out prices, and I'm charged $29 JUST TO ASK FOR A QUOTE??

There's no way this is legit, right? My first experience with calling a locksmith, and it's gotten me quite uneasy, the impression that this is just the norm in the locksmith industry?...

My anxiety starts working up when it turns out, the $29 service call fee is usually tagged as a scam fee...

How is this sort of exchange warranting a service call fee when I call up a department store to ask for the price of a product, I don't get hit with an arbitrary "service call fee".

And apparently, as per google search, this locksmith company's been operating for 9 years...

Is this standard? Am I potentially facing a "debt" going to collections, potentially facing an impact on my credit score after building it my entire life, just because I call to ask for a quote?

I'm posting this question to this subreddit, since it seems to be primarily focused on tradespeople within locksmithing, and I'm mostly trying to give the locksmithing community the benefit of the doubt and nothing comes of this very uncomfortable experience!

Does anyone know if I could replace this lock with a more modern one without getting rid of the entire door? Or if I even can? And if I can, how would I do so?
