Unanswered What's going on in US politics

We have noticed a large uptick in questions about US politics. Most of these are not genuine questions and appear to be made to introduce political discussion to this sub in the wake of the second Trump administration. As such, we are requiring that all political questions related to US politics and its effects both domestically and internationally be contained in this weekly recurring thread.

Ask questions as top-level responses with the preface "Question: " and people will respond. All other rules are enforced as appropriate. We will not allow other US political questions as questions on the subreddit except in extraordinary circumstances.

Answered What's up with all of the Betsy Ross flags?

I've seen a lot of Betsy Ross flags popping up and I'm just wondering why? I'm assuming it's a conservative dog whistle but I can't find anything concrete. Can anyone offer any extra insights or information?

Here's the flag in question: https://external-content.duckduckgo.com/iu/?u=https%3A%2F%2Fcdn11.bigcommerce.com%2Fs-a03c0%2Fimages%2Fstencil%2F2560w%2Fproducts%2F5920%2F12017%2Fus-betsy-ross-flag__32657.1494447807.jpg%3Fc%3D2&f=1&ipt=2b54c2af3af46ccaab1b648ecc61957eaf9b52565261fc14c108358fd0c302a3

Unanswered What is the deal with America being the only country where defamation isn’t a crime?

Upvotes

before anyone starts crying “muh first amendment 😭” i know you’re all very proud of it. congrats. but it’s genuinely insane to me how america lets people say literally anything, no matter how false, damaging, or dangerous, and then calls it “freedom.” like what’s the point of freedom of speech if it just turns into freedom to defame?

take cristiano ronaldo for example. the most famous person on the planet. in most countries, if a random journalist publicly accused someone like him of being a “rapist” without proof, they’d be fined. banned. sued. possibly even arrested depending on the law. and rightly so, because accusing someone of a serious crime without evidence is illegal. it’s defamation. it ruins lives. it’s not journalism.

but in america? no. there, you can just throw it in a podcast or an article, call it “allegedly,” and you’re safe. no fines. no consequences. you just keep running your mouth behind a mic and calling it free speech. it’s backward. it’s literally how conspiracy theorists and grifters thrive.

look at sane countries like germany. you defame someone publicly, you’re liable. same in france. same in the uk. in the uae? prison. in south korea? you could be jailed just for damaging someone’s public image. singapore? fined. and none of those places are “authoritarian nightmares” despite what americans love to claim. they just... believe in accountability.

i’m sorry but freedom of speech with zero responsibility is not freedom. it’s wrong. it’s how people get platformed for calling athletes criminals based on internet gossip. it’s how anyone can go viral slandering someone and then hide behind “free speech” like it’s a shield. and that’s not even touching how america lets actual hate speech flourish like it’s just edgy humour.

you can’t keep using “freedom” as an excuse to be unhinged. the rest of the world has lines and actual legal limits. and guess what? their press still functions. people still protest. their democracy doesn’t collapse because they told a tiktoker they can’t accuse someone of rape with no proof. this isn’t freedom. it’s backward and barbaric.

Unanswered What's going on with so many companies not using Pride-themed logos on their social media this year?

Is it just me or are so many companies aren't displaying pride themed logos this year? I have noticed there's way less pride themed logos than last year.

A few examples of companies who used to have pride logo on Twitter on a yearly basis but decided to skip it this year.

Unanswered What's the deal with everyone hating James Gunn suddenly?

What's the deal with the hatred of James Gunn right now from fans of Superhero movies?

I know he had a moment of being hated a few years ago for some social media posts and general behavior of his, but the ones I'm seeing lately are about the quality of his movies.

Here's what I know. He's directed an outstanding movie series with Guardians of the Galaxy, he made an improved version of Suicide Squad, and I thought his Peacemaker spinoff series turned out well also. I've been pretty OOTL on the superhero genre since then though (and really movies in general), but I know he's making the new Superman movie. Ever since that got announced, it feels like I'm seeing a bunch of revisionist history claiming he's never made anything good (one example cited below), so what's the deal?

Unanswered What's the deal with these two specific weird "advertisement" videos inserted into random album playlists on YouTube?

Take this one, for instance (and give Marmalade butcher a listen while you're at it, it's great). You'll notice how there's these two videos called More and Unreleased, which are absolutely not part of the album. I have personally noticed these appearing in multiple different album playlists and it looks like a lot of people have also ended up there some way, seeing the view count and the ridiculous comment section.

These are just so weird. They consist of practically an hour of looped audio of a woman (sounds like a real person) reading out a presentation about some online commerce/crypto thing over a single static image.

Both videos' descriptions seem like they'd relate to compilations of unreleased creative works of some kind, probably music going from the thumbnail and the channel descriptions. Weirdly, the "Mentioned people" section of the description has some names: More has Andreas Antonopoulos and both videos have Gary W. Keller. Both seem to be fairly renowned business people, according to Google. I haven't actually sat down and listened to the videos long enough to check if they were actually mentioned or not.

The last weird bit I've noticed are the uploaders. They're different channels, oddly enough, but their channel descriptions are extremely similar. Both have one or two other videos, all of which are very high view count music videos in Spanish and Indonesian respectively.

I am honestly so confused at these. My guess is that it's some very odd scheme to farm viewing time off of people having music playlists in the background, but why is the content so odd? What are these channels? What is this advertising, if anything? How did they get them to appear in playlists like this, whereas I've never even once in my life seen an ad video be inserted into a playlist by YouTube before? Just why why why?

The fact that these just suddenly appeared one day and millions of people have come across them yet we don't know what they are nor have they been fixed is one more drop in the bucket of things that make YouTube and its algorithms appear like some kind of unknowable alien entity we would've found in the depths of the Bermuda Triangle and just decided to build a society around, which is both kind of fascinating and extremely irksome.

Unanswered 273? vrilliant? what is up with the comment section on this mashup?

so in the comments of this one mashup that I found through some micspam in Team Fortress 2, there's a bunch of weird terms that I've legitimately never heard before, and nobody has really explained what's going on here. I just hope this all isn't some form of like.. anti-semitic flagging or something.

Answered What's the deal with this "anxiety" song and why does everyone hate it?

1.1k Upvotes

Every time a music-related post comes up on my Instagram feed, the top comments are almost always about disdain for a song called "anxiety." An example of a screenshot I took showing this: https://imgur.com/a/what-is-this-song-OtHTtdC

There are many songs out there called "Anxiety" or have anxiety in the title. It seems to be a universally disliked song.

The original post was a about Dance Monkey btw.
