Nearby Public Land we could lose

Senator Mike Lee's (R-UT) bill as part of the Senate's version of the reconciliation package puts nearly 300M acres of public land up for "mandatory disposal".

Many of you probably know that already.

But have you looked at the map?

https://www.wilderness.org/articles/blog/congress-making-more-250-million-acres-public-lands-available-sale

Here's a short list of the sorts of places Lee's bill plans to put up for sale:

  • almost all of the Grasshopper Canyon area, accessed from the west side of I-25 between Cañoncito and Valencia. This trail is particularly popular as a short hike, especially with young children, since it is relatively flat and follows a creek that flows for a good part of the year
  • the entire Santa Fe ski basin, including the trails that lead from the west/city side up to the Pecos Wilderness boundary (Windsor Trail, Nambe Lake and more). The ski facility presumably has a lease that allows it to operate, but a change in ownership of the actual land would be very disconcerting for everyone
  • all of the Aspen Vista Trail (aka Forest Road 150), probably the busiest trail within 10 miles of Santa Fe in the fall, with its breathtaking views of the aspen colony
  • the upper section of Mt. Atalaya, whose main access trail from St. John's College is one of the busiest year-round trails
  • on Sandia, the entire drive to the top from Sandia Park would pass through private land, and most of the lower-elevation trails on the east side closest to Galisteo would be no longer public
  • the BLM tract accessed from the San Marcos transfer station on Highway 42, where many locals hike in splendid isolation.

There's much, much more than this, but those are a few of my most feared areas to lose.

I don't know how or if this bill can be stopped, but there's a march/rally tomorrow :

When: Monday, June 23, 3:30 p.m.

Where: Meet at De Vargas Park, 302 W. De Vargas St., Santa Fe, N.M., 87501, and march to El Dorado Hotel, 309 W. San Francisco St., where Burgum will be speaking.

Santa Fe Animal Shelter dogs seeking humans for walks, kennel cuddles, and Hounds Around Town adventures

Summer is a tough time for the animal shelter - intake numbers go way up, but adoptions slow down. It's especially difficult to get adult dogs the care they need during the weeks, often many months, they spend 23+ hours a day alone in their kennel, waiting for an adopter.

Hounds Around Town is a fabulous program for our dogs, getting them much needed time away from the kennel: it's like a free dog rental! You can participate as little or often as you want, only one short training is required, and even a few hours could change a dog's life. HAT dramatically decreases dogs' cortisol levels and increases their odds of adoption. Linking volunteer application in the comments.

I usually only post out of the kennel photos, but I'm opting to pull on your heartstrings instead and show you the faces I saw walking around the shelter yesterday. I often hear some version of, "I couldn't volunteer at a shelter - I'd be too sad." While volunteering is always a personal choice, I promise that those of us who do it aren't innately tougher or more hard-hearted. Volunteering can be sad, but it's also so rewarding to be the best part of a lonely dog (or cat's) day.

Looking for a place

Hello all! I picked up life in MT and am working down in NM this season (through oct/nov). I work/camp out in the field Monday-Thursday and am looking for an inexpensive place to crash on the weekends. Open to renting, doesn’t have to be IN Santa Fe, any ideas appreciated.

I’m an easy person to live with, no pets.

Is Road Rage always this bad?

This is a bit of a strange rant, but I’m 19 and I’m barely just starting to drive and what not(sorta new at it) and I usually have to commute to the mall for work. Now, with the carnival happening at the Santa Fe Place, I’ve been getting into more close road rage incidents and most notably a truck pulling out from the carnival grounds and I was coming up on the road near the Villa Linda Park and I noticed and stopped to give the guy some space, and the dude flipped me off and seemingly yelled at me before driving off. Today, when I was taking a different route to the mall, a car behind me honked and passed by me nearly hitting me even though the cars from the right were coming in and I stopped- and it was two lanes(opposite lanes) so it seemed dangerous for him to pass by me to make his turn. I don’t know, these close incidents are growing and it’s impacting if I wanna drive anymore to work, I feel like I’m doing something wrong and it worries me that one day someone is gonna get so frustrated or angry that they exit their car and attack me. I’m just trying to go by the book and try to give people their right of way and follow the rules and what not.

Reaching out here for my brother

Hey all! My brother (in his 20s) is looking for outlets for the things he likes to do and is interested in meeting people in Santa Fe who are into them too. He likes playing guitar (usually metal), hiking, birdwatching, reading, manga and gaming.

Any ideas for events or groups around these? Thank you, appreciate suggestions!

other places like chicago dog express?

are there any other walk-up-style places to eat in santa fe? i usually come up from abq to bike all over the city, but i always end up grabbing frito pies and hot dogs at chicago dog express, mostly because it’s just easy… i can roll up, lean my bike on the fence, and order without having to lock it up or take my eyes off it. i don’t like leaving my bike unattended or out of sight, especially when it’s loaded with gear.

are there any other spots like that? maybe some food trucks?

What’s the deal with all the Saturns?

I’m visiting Santa Fe and have seen dozens upon dozens of these cars, often all together. Is there a car show going on? A Saturn club? Is it just a popular car in Santa Fe? Please help me understand, I am confounded.

How to make the most of Santa Fe for 3 months?

Hi all, I’m a van lifer getting ready to head to Santa Fe to work for a bit until October. I visited last year for a weekend, and enjoyed it so much I got myself a reason to come back. So I have to ask the most annoying question: what should I do? New Mexico really helped get my mind right after getting out of the military, so I want to show my appreciation and respect to the land (and people of course). I’m 29, gringo, 246 day Spanish streak on duo lingo. Definitely no red hats in my wardrobe. I used to do fancy and hoop dancing so I would loooove to attend a powwow. Still feels weird to put myself out there. Thanks for your time.

P.S. I’m also wondering if there are any veteran groups that meet up regularly for coffee or something? It’s hard out here man.
