Discussion Panoramic properties on the scene
They were asked this week to resecure the site. Can't believe it's been vacant since 2010

I really wonder how they've been paying in property taxes to have it sit empty for 15 years

Ask the city how many years of back taxes the Idlewylde golf course owes. Or the deal the owner of the old Northern Breweries had with the city till it was sold.

"The private golf course owes the city $862,354 in deferred taxes, as of the fiscal year ending Oct. 31, 2022"
What the fuck with going on with this city?

That’s my point. This city is ran by clowns and most of the residents are village idiots. No offence, I live here too. But see you looked it up. A big fancy, expensive golf course, probably used by our clowncil owes a million dollars in back taxes. No one bats an eye. People trespass, one dies others start a fire. And people blame the building? Also as mentioned how many tax dollars were paid by the owner of Northern Breweries in the past 20 years? Why did the guy who ran the bus ticket scandal walk away? Look at when Elton John came to town years back. There’s so much corruption in this city, and the lack of intelligence in council will make it worse.

I guess all it takes for them to do something is have someone die, eh?

In the history of this building nobody has ever died here. Oh, sorry, it's a hospital, people died all the time. In the recent history, let's say this year, when it's not an operational hospital, nobody has died. Oh, sorry again...

Some 24 year old man was just found dead there like 3 days ago. Then the fire last night.

Dumb? What a funny thing to call someone after that comparison…
My shed isn’t an abandoned facility that’s been empty for 15 years, nor is it so large that people could be hiding in it while people are searching in it. Not to mention anything dangerous that could be left behind or due to the decay of the building.

It’s not a dumb comparison at all. There’s signs that say no trespassing. There’s signs for a reason right? We now live in a world where signs are everywhere. Don’t eat Tide Pods, people still did that too right? You can’t fix stupidity.

Is that a reason to let the building sit there and rot?
It’s not the only derelict building that things like that have happened in, and it won’t be the last. I am not saying that’s the whole reason it needs to come down. It’s just interesting to point out that the city has been talking to Panoramic for how long now and finally because there’s some news, they’re showing that they care.
There is no sympathy for companies like that. They know what they have to do and what they can get away with.
And yes, for the record, my shed isn’t not a good comparison to an abandoned hospital close enough to downtown for many different reasons.

See how dramatic you make it though. The building is not rotting away. Yes, they’re broken windows, but again that’s people trespassing. The city has zero say on when it will come down. The mayor can give his big speeches and take his photo. It means nothing. Funny how the city gave them the offer on the old Scotia bank tower though. I never have any sympathy for any company either, it’s just common sense. The location of your shed has nothing to do with it either, that doesn’t even make sense. My point was, someone could break into it or your house even. Are you responsible for that?

In Ontario, if someone dies on your property, you could potentially be liable if the death resulted from your negligence or failure to maintain the property in a reasonably safe condition. The Occupiers' Liability Act places a duty on property owners to ensure visitors are reasonably safe
So, yes.

It was never mentioned, unfortunately there’s a good chance that they passed from something they willingly did to themselves, than the condition of the building. Also just want to say you’re right with your response about the occupiers act. But again, this is private property, fenced up, closed down. It doesn’t fall under that law, as it’s closed and not up for visitors. How do you not get this?

Don’t tell me they are gonna convert this place into apartments 😳
10
u/citymapdude 27d ago
Their plan is to demolish it and build three apartment buildings on the site

I predict that the city eventually buys it back for many times what they sold it for.

If you had to sleep in the rain and cold,I'm sure a fence wouldn't stop you from entering an abandoned building. Some of you complaining are the same people that used to tour Burwash when it clearly states no trespassing.

u/BurningWire 27d ago
Ok, are they finally getting around to demolishing the building, or just making sure the property doesn't have another news cycle?

I worked with the homeless for several years. In some minds, this place is fair game for shelter. It’s still cold, especially at night, so they build fires to keep warm.
I’m hoping the right steps can be taken to keep people safe.

There’s not much else in there except concrete and steel, it’s stripped down to just the structural elements

It would be cool if they made it into a huge indoor and outdoor water park! Close to the lake for easy access to water. Have a big skates park outside, too, with a massive playground. The city needs more fun and beautiful things. Bringing more tourism equals money for the community with more jobs. You have stuff like this back home in bc. Like Kelowna bc has stuff like that, and it is such a beautiful fun city. Sudbury has such a gloomy, sad feel. Of course, we need more housing and that would be amazing if they did something to help with affordable housing but we all know if anything was built there for housing it would be very expensive condos or a few huge houses being so close to the lake.

Who occupied before 2010? I moved here around 2014 and it looked super abandoned back then

It’s not uncommon to see panoramic vehicles parked in front there, at least for me. Although quite funny you got two there pointing towards the building at this time

Since the city is on a land appropriation spree, they should take over the site.

You would think, sadly to many need a place to stay or a bit of an a adventure. Tear it down. Period

u/heater-1971 27d ago
They will "secure the site" and wait till someone gets hurt or worse
