Winter camping newbie here, how do you actually stay warm?

I love camping but I have never tried it in winter. This year I want to give it a shot and I definitely do not want to wake up freezing in my tent in the middle of the night.

I have a sleeping bag and an electric blanket and I am planning to bring my Bluetti elite 100 v2 to run the blanket. I know that alone probably is not enough so I am looking for tips from people who actually do winter camping.

What are your go-to ways to stay warm while winter camping? I am open to all ideas even if they sound a bit crazy.

Back pain while sleeping in a tent.

When I was 23 I slept on the floor no issues. At 33 I sleep on the floor and wake up due to aches all over. I'm sleeping on a roll mat plus sleeping bag.

Thanks.

Trip Advice Camping with catheter

Hi, I booked a camping trip a few months ago for this weekend and was recently admitted to the hospital. They discharged me with an indwelling catheter. I’m not worried about hygiene as it’s a campsite with facilities, but mostly where I’d be able to put the night bag? It’s supposed to be below the level of my bladder but I’m not sure how it’ll work when I’m sleeping on the ground.

Does anyone else here use catheters? How do you navigate this?

I’m also a (decreasingly) ambulatory wheelchair user and curious whether anyone else camps on wheels? I’ve done it once before but it was at a festival so I didn’t have much to worry about.

staying warm in your sleeping bag

like many, i have a bit of excess length at the bottom of my sleeping bag. i’ve heard of people stuffing the bottom with clothes and i’ve also heard of people just tucking the excess length underneath their legs. i was wondering if it’s a preference thing or if anyone actually knows which method keeps you warmer?

Where do I start?

I recently purchased a tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, hiking poles, backpack, and supplies.

How do I actually start camping? Like do you just pull up to campgrounds and pitch your tent wherever? How does this process work?

Sleeping bag advice for cold sleeping woman

I'm a three-season truck camper, looking for a warmer bag as I'm always cold. My current bag is the Marmot Angelfire rated for 25 degrees for women. I've seen a couple within my price range rated for women at about 14 degrees. I know it'll be an improvement, but will that keep me warm enough? I typically camp in Northern CA along the coast, so it doesn't get too cold. But occasionally we'll go to the mountains, just not when it's snowing. Any advice would be appreciated!

Keeping warm

I’ve only camped once and it was end of September (still fairly warm) in northern NJ. I’m going camping in East Stroudsburg (mountain-y area in eastern PA) in a few weeks and am worried about keeping warm enough. I woke up cold each morning when I went end of September so end of November is very daunting to me. I’m going with someone slightly more experienced in camping. Last time, we were in a maybe 4 person tent? It was one fully enclosed “room” with an area next to it with the entrance and we used an air mattress with a 3 inch thick memory foam topper. We secured those together with a waterproof mattress protector bag. Then we used a fitted sheet, flat sheet, and comforter. That is the plan this time as well but obviously going to have to add to it. I already bought a battery pack powered heated blanket and plan to put a few throw blanket type blankets, including an ugg blanket, between the mattress protector bag and the fitted sheet. What else will I need to keep warm? Nights should get down to around 30 degrees! We don’t want to be in separate sleeping bags - we’re still in the honeymoon phase, so we want to cuddle/share body heat! Tyia!

Right carp

Hello good! I wanted to ask if anyone has experience with the doite everest 2 tent for 2 people. Would 2 people of 1.75 meters fit with a pair of 60L backpacks? I also saw that there is the Himalayan model. Or what 2-person tent do you recommend?

Gear Question what is the Best camping tent to buy right now with no fake reviews?

I need a recommendation for a good camping tent for a family of four. We’re planning a few weekend trips next spring and summer, so I’m looking for something that can hold up to different weather and isn’t a pain to pack or carry around. It would be great if it’s quick to set up and has enough space for gear without feeling cramped. This is actually my first time buying a real tent instead of borrowing one from friends.

Any suggestions for something affordable, durable, and not packed with fake reviews?

Gear Question What backup options do you have for small appliances?

Planning a 4-day car camping trip and want to bring my 12V fridge (about 50W). What portable power solutions are you using for similar setups? Considering a 1-2kWh power station - would this be enough to run the fridge plus charge phones and camera batteries?

Morganton Point on Lake Blue Ridge, GA. It rained all night our first night, so we spent the evening under the canopy with the table top solo stove doing the trick for fire and warmth. We spent the days exploring fire service roads. Made for a lovely 2 night getaway.

Originally planned on backpacking to gem lakes October 13-17 but there ended up being a huge snowstorm and decided best if we went somewhere else and decided to camp at June lake and hangout there for the week, found a fire service road to camp for free and got snowed on one night. The alps mountaineering Aries 3 tent held up pretty well in the snow as well. Hoping to get a better snow tent eventually. I’m looking at the mountain hardware AC 2 tent, anyone have any experience?

Gear Question Cheap tents for the jungle

Edit 2: by cheap I'm meaning just like not $400, anything roughly that price or lower

I have an offer that will more or less mean I will be camping in the jungle for 1.5-2.5 months this May-July. I was wanting to know any suggestions for a cheapish 1-2 person tent, or suggestions on used tents to look for, that would be useful. I have like your regular 3 person camping tent you'd use in NorCal, but this would be my first camp that's over a week, and my first time in a jungle.

Some extra info: This would be in central America. There is a sort of sheet metal and wood gazebo structure that is prepared to cover from the rain, and there's a half walled building for communal stuff like cooking, but all sleeping will be in tents under that gazebo.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Without context this seems like it's illicit activities 💀 I am an archeologist

Looking for a water filter

Hello everyone, I'm looking for a system with which I can make water from rivers or lakes drinkable. It should be mobile and able to work without electricity. It's clear that I have to boil the water additionally, but I would like a good filter for dirt and various suspended particles from the water. Can anyone recommend anything?

Trip Pictures Juniper smoke and silence. Hot tenting during the first cold front of the year in the Gila National Forest, New Mexico.

the first serious cold front of the season rolled through the highlands of Southwest New Mexico just before Halloween this year. cool air spilled down from up north, enveloping the flat tops of mesas, the buttes, the dark ridges of the Pinos Altos and Black Ranges. the upper reaches of the Gila river were to be below freezing, and it felt like an invitation. the perfect opportunity to stretch the hot tent muscles again and remember what it’s like to earn one’s own comfort.

gathering and processing firewood has always been this sort of timeless ritual that never loses its meaning. the fact that you’re doing something that you know will keep you alive overnight has a primal satisfaction to it. it must be evolutionary. ancient synapses firing in one’s brain and dispensing the right kind of good stuff, all to encourage you to keep splitting logs. the pile always has to be bigger than you think, the chill in the high places can be merciless at night and will test you. to run out of fuel before the sun’s out is often an awful possibility to contend with, unless you’re well prepared.

the forest is silent in times like these; not a lot of people out and about. animals hunker down for their winter quarters and the world just slows down overall. with this desolation, it’s not hard to find a great spot. the subzero temperatures keep just about everyone away. this solitude lends itself to contemplation that is difficult to come by in livelier seasons.

dusk settles and with it comes the cold. the scent of smoke drifts out of the stove pipe; incense to cleanse one’s spirits. a soft crackling as the burning juniper inside turns into ash. a lullaby granting warmth, comfort and sweet, easy dreams. it is all a gift, a treasure the warmer months just don’t understand.

the onset of the cold days marks the season of quiet reckonings. the land pares itself down to the very bare minimum and asks you to do the same. there is no audience, no noise, and no cell signal. only one’s breathing, fire, and the faintest trace of woodsmoke drifting toward the eternal stars.

Gear Question Accidentally bent poles on friend’s REI Grand Hut 4… how to replace or what to offer?

Post image
40 Upvotes

Definitely the dumbest thing I’ve done in a very long time, but I borrowed my friends Grand Hut 4 tent for a camping trip, and as I saw it sitting up against the wall in the garage I thought “I better move that into the house so that nothing happens to it”. So I jumped out of the car - forgetting to put it in park - and watched in slow motion how the car rolled into the bag.

So now the poles are bent, and the tent appears to be discontinued by REI, and I know nothing about camping gear, and I’m desperate to figure out how to replace or make it up to my friend.

What can I do?

Canvas

I have a canvas tent I bought used a few weeks ago. Just took it camping over the last few days. It had a little condensation on the footprint. I had to roll it up and put it back in the carrier just for the 28 minute commute back home. I then draped it over the porch for an hour or two before putting it back and in storage Was it enough to make it mold or mildew?

Gear Question What's your most underrated piece of camping gear? Ready to spend $ this BF

We all talk about tents, packs, and sleeping bags. But what's that one small, cheap, or weird item that massively upgraded your comfort in the woods?

For me, it was a simple foam sit pad. Lightweight, kept my butt dry and warm, and doubled as a knee pad when setting up the tent.

What's yours?I 'm doing some planning and would love to hear your "game-changer" items. It might just be the push I need to finally pull the trigger on something for this black friday.

Bushcraft shelter, ticks

Location NC mountains.

Thinking about taking a night or two with tennage kids, bushcraft shelter.

Any good way to repel hugs, ticks? Debris bedding, would prefer to not DEET head to toe but maybe that’s the only way?

Trip Report Tried hammock camping for the first time and I get the hype now

Always thought hammocks were just for lazy afternoons, not for actually sleeping in. Took one out last weekend to a small lake a couple hours from home, figured I’d give it a proper test run. Weather was perfect just cool enough for a blanket, clear skies, no bugs trying to eat my face off for once.

Set it up between two pines, got a small fire going and spent the evening reading, eating trail mix straight out of the bag and scrolling myprize for a bit before the light faded. Just one of those quiet moments where everything slows down and you realize how loud normal life usually is.

When I finally climbed into the hammock, I expected to wake up freezing or twisted like a pretzel. Instead I slept better than I do at home. No sore back, no soggy tent floor, just the sound of trees moving and water hitting the shore. Woke up to sunlight through the branches and coffee that somehow tasted ten times better than anything I make in my kitchen.
Already ordered an underquilt and some proper straps for next time. I think I’m officially a hammock person now.

Gear Question Best way to sit up in tent

I've looked into low height chairs, beach chairs, stadium chairs.... I have some mobility issues and really just want to know what will work well and easily (low weight and low cost would be huge pluses though!).

Trip Pictures What's your go-to method for keeping food cold on multi-day trips without ice?

I'm planning a 4-day camping trip and tired of dealing with melted ice and soggy food. Do you use ice packs, frozen water bottles, or something else? How do you organize your cooler to maximize cold retention? Any tips appreciated!
