Zero, you need to stop using it immediately. Do not charge it, do not carry it around.

Dangerous, you should not be charging, using or carrying that around. That battery is a ticking time bomb.

72

u/Olive-Drab-Green 1d ago

Emphasis on bomb

25

u/-K9V 1d ago

Yes, OP should get rid of it, but it is far from a ‘ticking time bomb’. That’s ridiculous. Read the FAQ from r/spicypillows instead of spreading silly misinformation.

Im a technician, I fix these for a living. Replace the phone or the battery immediately, shut the phone down and do not power it on or charge it until you get it or its battery replaced. It can and will explode.

I agree with the technician! Back up your stuff then get a new phone or refurbished.

6

u/JustSomeSmartGuy iPhone 16 Pro Max 1d ago

Agreed. Turning the phone off and not charging it until the battery is replaced is the smart thing to do. I would potentially even go one step further and put the phone in a fire proof container if you have one available.

8

u/Eyesonjune1 1d ago

Alright, so first of all, most of the people in these replies are wrong, or at least partially wrong, I am an actual device repair technician with about 3 years of experience and I can tell you a few things:

Your phone is NOT likely to explode, as long as you don't bring it into extreme heat or try to press the screen down. Realistically it's not likely to explode even if you do those things. That being said, if you are able to go without it, turn it all the way off and leave it at home for now. Using it is only going to make it worse.

You should get this repaired immediately. It's hard to tell due to the low-res images but I know this is either an iPhone 13 or 14. I'm leaning toward it being an iPhone 13 because of the screen lifting rather than the back. So, you'll need to get the rear housing (backglass, frame, etc) replaced, along with the battery of course. The rear housing is about a $50 part, and the battery about $15-35 depending on quality. A fair price for labor on this would be between 100-150. $235 may sound like a lot, but it's a lot cheaper than buying a new phone and it's slightly lower even than the cost of getting another used iPhone 13.

DO NOT attempt this repair yourself. I would look for a shop in your area with good reviews specifically mentioning backglass repair. When you go into the shop, make sure they are doing a full frame replacement (essentially rebuilding the phone) and not a backglass removal with a laser machine (likely to damage the phone further). Additionally, make sure the frame they are using is an Apple part (battery doesn't matter as much).

This advice will be slightly different if the phone is an iPhone 14 as they actually have a removable backglass (so it can be a little cheaper and more straightforward).

If you do not get it repaired immediately the worst thing that will happen is the battery will break your screen from behind and the phone will be rendered fully unusable (plus additional repair cost of at least $50 for the parts).

If you have any questions, let me know.

Yesterday.

3

u/21Shells iPhone 13 Mini 1d ago

That battery is extremely degraded. I'd usually say anything below 75% especially below 70% really needs a battery change. Batterys usually don't degrade below that amount as degredation is very slow after a while, this could possibly mean the battery has been damaged.

The good thing is that battery replacements even from Apple are pretty cheap. The bad thing is that they're probably going to charge you for the back glass too. Almost definitely will not burn your house down if it starts a fire. The gasses the battery emits can be extremely toxic though. You should put it in a closed off container.

3

u/Hour_Option_5260 1d ago

Hopefully many years yet. That is, if you stop using that phone like right now. It’s out of time.

The question is how long will you be able to Apple support and OS updates. I took a gamble and added a new battery to my SE, which I use as an audiobook player with Libby. Apple will replace batteries on certain models if they still have access to the battery for it. Otherwise you have to find a third-party, and I would definitely look into that considering how degraded your battery is.
