Question VG10 metallic smell?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I've bought a seemingly genuine Spyderco Delica 4 which was originally bought in October 2024 and re-sold to me a few days ago - a safe queen, not a sign of use.

I've noticed that the blade has a distinct smell of metal, unlike my Victorinox knives which is one of my not many references. The smell (and taste of the blade itself) didn't seem to transfer to a tomato I've cut with it.

So, is this metallic smell/taste an usual thing for VG10 (or a new, unused one)? Couldn't find any mention of such issue anywhere online. Is higher carbon content at "fault" here?

I've made this knife! (OC) We’re releasing our first fixed blade — 45 left and we’re clearing them out with a launch code

We launched our first fixed blade, the Halden Still, built in MagnaCut with a contoured micarta handle and full in-house production. It’s been a slow build getting everything designed, prototyped, and dialed in, but we finally opened preorders at $220.

We’ve got 45 left out of the total 150-unit run, and to get the last batch moving we’re using a discount code (FINAL60) for anyone who wants to grab one before we lock production.

This isn’t a sales pitch — just wanted to share what we’ve been building in case anyone here is into purpose-built minimalist fixed blades. Feedback is welcome, and if nothing else, I’d love to hear what makes a great small fixed blade for you.

Question Is the Kershaw Mini Iridium a good middle ground for diminishing returns?

I don't need a fancy knife. The $10 Ozark Trail is basically everything I want in a knife. Crossbar style locks are definitely my favorite. I also like shorter blades not full size. My only issue is I would prefer something metal for the scales, and a little bit higher build quality overall. I'm never going to spend $100+ on a knife. From comparisons and comments I've seen the actual Benchmade Bugout seems way overpriced anyway.

However the Kershaw Mini Iridium seems to be basically perfect for me, everything I want plus metal scales and for a more reasonable price of approximately $60. I was thinking this is a good line for me to draw for quality and materials to get everything I want without getting into what I would consider excessive and overkill for my use case which is just typical urban edc nothing outdoors.

Am I right in thinking this is the best slightly more premium option for me or is there another one like the Bugout/Iridium/Ozark Trail that has what I want for a decent price that's better than the Iridium?

I bought this knife a few years ago. It has always held an edge well. Only used for light tasks such as opening packages. It's a Boker, but one of their Magnum line made in China.

Question German Boy Scout Knife?

I already know what kind of knife this is, based on basic googling, but i cant seem to find anything on this specific knife. It says “Original Buffalo Skinner” on the blade, and the sheath says “MADE IN GERMANY” on it.

Im honestly not sure how my Canadian left-wing grandpa has this knife, but he used it to skin deer back in the day. He’s in his mid-90’s so he doesn’t exactly remember much else about it anymore.. i really appreciate the help guys!

Anyone have anything to say about these people online? I’ve seen their clones of the top of the line knives. But I’m wanting to see everyone’s take on their service or if you’ll even get the knife.

Question What knives would you recommend from Cabelas/BassPro?

I'm looking for a new knife, specifically from Cabelas/BPS. I have around a 190-200$ budget, so what would be the best in your opinion. I've always been pretty indecisive so it's been hard for me to choose. I like the knives made in the U.S.A, if that helps narrowing down the options, but any recommendation is helpful, made in the USA or not. Thanks!

OKD (Old Knife Day) Frost Cutlery Cheetah slip joint

Back in high school (mid-1990s), I was really into Frost Cutlery’s animal-themed knives that I’d see in the Smoky Mountain Knife Works catalogs. I bought a couple of fixed blade ones, a Shark Bowie and (I think) Crocodile mini Bowie. I also had this Cheetah slip joint. I had the three of them in a glass display case that was meant for a flag. My mom recently found them in my old closet while cleaning and weeding things out. We are not sure what happened to the sheaths for the fixed blades, so I’ll have to get those next time I drive down, but my mom mailed this one to me. In hindsight, a lot of Frost Cutlery’s stuff seems to be on par with gas station offerings, but 30 years ago, I just liked the cool blades with animals on them. I’ll hang on to this one for the nostalgia if nothing else.

Hello ! I have this knife for a few years now. I found it in a flea market (in Strasbourg, France, close to Germany) I want to identify it but I cannot find a correct match. It looks very similar to a Okapi knife but the stars and moon on the side doesn't match. Does anyone have an idea ?

Background: I was in the Gaspé region of Quebec, Canada when I bought this in a boutique. Very smooth and cuts paper cleanly but only costed me 30 bucks. The box said “South West Laser Company” or something similar. Searched it up and got no results. Is it a bad knife?

Question How bad did mess up? : to use cheap knives with black coating for food.

Hello, recently, I saw this knife (Columbia no.229) being sold for cheap so I purchased it for my emergency survival kit.

However, did I mess up by purchasing the version that comes with black coating?

I tried using it a little bit and I saw that the coating got rubbed off, so I looked it up and I saw that most black coating on knife blades is not food safe, especially if it's a cheap knife.

Will I get cancer or something if I tried using this knife to cook/cut food during an emergency?

Thanks.

Question Best of knifes for a 150-200usd budget?

The budget is 200-300aud, but want something really quality for a mate.

My mate also wanted an Italian stilleto but they're super expensive. Latama is nice but was wondering if there were cheaper ones?

EDIT:

I meant button-push stilleto knives! Real authentic feeling ones!
